Hi Tom interesting review :-) I have had the Ollo s5x for about 6 weeks now and find that spacial audio recordings sound awesome on these head phones. I am about to start using them in my new Atmos Studio and the S5x will be used as my go to headphone for checking my Atmos mix check... I will of coarse still be using my Hedd Headphone which i got from you guys and have done many stereo mix's. Best wishes in 2023

I did pick up these on a chance as so many very talking warmly about the 4sx and I am getting into dolby atmos. I must say these sound great, are easy to drive and comfortable to wear. The can opener plugin is a fantastic tip, I also have the Heddphones which MUST have this plugin to make good mixes. Thanks for giving me some great settings for the plugin.

Thanks for the eq profile. Are the made for fabfilter q3? I ask because fabfilter uses non standard q values, so knowing that, I could translate the q value to my eq plugin. Thank you again.

Thanks for the review :) One question, I'm thinking of buying these Ollo S5X or the Neumann NDH30. What do you think would be a better option for studio mixing? I mix techno music so "feeling" the bass is very important to me. Another point is that I would like to get as much juice out of them as possible, do you think that using them with a dac/amp like Apogee Groove (the most portable solution i found) would be a good idea? You would def want the apogee to run the Neumann, the Ollo is more forgiving. Both of these headphones are very neutral for bass, which although technically correct and even isn't the most inspiring level for writing with. I think the Neumann just edges the detail level, but it is a touch warmer in tone overall than the Ollo.

@@dharmaone77 What you want is the Audeze Maxwell. Ignore that it says it is a gaming headset, it’s a bass production headphone transformer. Tons of detail, perfect midrange balance and a killer dirty sub. I took one on holiday with me for a week and it was amazing for hotel room type writing, tons of detailed, yet punchy and controlled sub. Was smashing out VIP’s and got most of a remix done by the pool! DAC and amp are great and built in, plus the wireless works great with a usb-c computer, otherwise you can run it with an analogue cable too.

Are these EQ curves intended to correct deficiencies in the headphone's frequency response itself? If so, can I apply this method in my monitoring chain to achieve a more accurate mix?

I was wondering if you could share your Pro-Q curves for the Ollo S4X as well? I’m now shooting out my friend’s S5X against my S4X. They’re close without any EQ applied but your settings for the S5X make them much better. I want to make a fair comparison though!

@@ChrisKeyman I find the S4x 1.2 nicer to listen to and even mix without EQ: It has this low mid emphasis that sounds nice, but is actually farther from flat than the S5x. The S5x has an icky resonance around 8kHz which I just can't tolerate without EQ. It also sounds a bit thinner in the bass/low-mids vs the S4x, but I guess it's closer to being "flat" there. You can see these reflected in the measurement PDF Ollo provides (just google "Ollo measurements PDF" to find it). The catch there is that Ollo doesn't exactly use the Harman curve in their graphs, but a modified version of it. At least the charts have some competitor headphones and you can compare them with the Ollos if you own any of them.

11:50 How much detail are you losing vs the Hifiman Edition HX? Hard time choosing between these vs HX, the response of these sound much better, but yeah if you're loosing too much because of the dynamic driver...

Consider the Ananda as well, as it's easier to drive, main issue with edition x is that it needs a good amount of power to drive properly, most interfaces won't have enough as standard

I think the world is waiting for full tests of the Audeze MM100 - that one should be a close contender, but I've not had it in a A/B test yet to really talk about it properly.

Two different technologies. One doesn't rule over the other. Is different flavors. From my experience Bass is always rolled off on planars which just kills it for me.

Is the post eq curve q a real measurement ? Or a simulated one? Like did you eq it and then measired it again? Then got the flat curve? Cheers

How would you compare it to the new audeze MM500? They are different price points and don't have access to a pair of Ollo S5X. I understand that one is planar while the other uses the usual dynamic driver. I just want good headphones for atmos mixing.

There’s a full mm500 / LCD-5 video coming soon. The mm500 have much more detail, but I’d say that the tonal balance without EQ is probably closer on the Ollo… if you EQ them both to the same target, then the MM500 obviously win, but they are over 4x the price.

Who told you planars have more detail? IMO that's complete non-sense. The Austrian Audio Hi-X65 is a dynamic driver and it crushes every planar headphone I ever tried. Nothing from audeze, hifiman, Dan clark, Or Any Chifi headphone has more detail.

Sorry, I don't speak English and I understood little from the video even with the subtitles. Can I ask you (as an aid for mixing and mastering) what is better between Ollo Sx5 and HifiMan Edition XS? Imaging, soundstage, accuracy of bass, middle and trebble? I would listen with a focusrite 2i2. Thanks and sorry for the trouble.

You will need a better interface amp than a 2i2 for the XS. The S5X would work fine though. The s5X is tonally slightly better, but the Edition XS would be my pick for everything else, detail, separation, soundstage etc.
