I have been using a few methods to learn Korean over the past few months. I was eager to hear your history of the Korean language. I hoped it could answer one of my questions about Korean. How is there so many english sounding words in Korean? I mean words that sound the same & mean the same thing? Like key, coffee, party. There are so many. When did the languages mingle?

I've been studying Korean for about 3 years and love it. I will say this, in the Korean language learning community, Duolingo is considered a poor resource (it's better for other languages). Also, as of this week, Korea has mostly done away with Korean age so people will not be aging 1 year on New Year's Day after eating Rice Cake Soup 떡국. You probably recorded this before the change.
@jeffw7382 Жыл бұрын
"Also, as of this week, Korea has mostly done away with Korean age" doubt this will stick. The gov can pass whatever rules they want. They've been trying for a long time but I don't know a Korean that doesn't use the traditional age system, and I lived in Seoul for a decade. If it's it that prevalent in Seoul, I can only imagine how much more it's held onto outside of the capital.
@cherylschaeffer7832 Жыл бұрын
@jeffw7382 you might want to watch the video done by Hyunwoo and Yeji from Talk to Me in Korean where they talk about it and answer questions. There are 4 areas where Korean age is continuing to be used, but mostly it's been stopped. And many Koreans, especially younger ones, are happy.

its nice that its easier to learn korean now. im a korean adoptee and in our community, people have struggled for literal decades trying to learn this language because the resources were just, not there. considering that the oldest of us are gone now, its been so long and finally with the rise of hallyu there are more resources than ever. for us, learning it is very important if we want to find/communicate with our birth parents/family because the agencies often lie to our faces if we only speak english taking advantage of our lack of korean skills to hide their collective shame and deception about our birth records. and because there are some of us who lost contact with parents just due to the language barrier.

There are 70M native speakers, of which 20M are trapped in North Korea, so the actual number of Korean speakers in global society is only 50M. Nevertheless, most manuals, games, and programs support Korean, and there are many people who want to learn it. It is amazing considering how tiny 50M is as a language speaking population.

King Sejong Institute in Madrid, Spain was especially chaotic. I was there 2 years in 2014/15 which brought me a basic A1 level, that I have mostly forgotten. The courses were supposed to be taught in 75 hours each, but the Korean Cultural Centre were only providing 60 per year: a 2-hours class per week in the afternoons (4 PM - no other schedules) during 30 weeks to 20 students. I even had to wait 3 years to be in the chosen 20 ones, because you only had 5 available days to apply. You hardly remembered anything from one week to the next one, since you had no ways to practice the language: there are no native koreans around. Furthermore, I hardly could afford a subway ticket downtown, so having some trip to Seoul was out of the question.
