Thanks for the clarification guys. All this time….I never knew….. I did meet BJ “Secret Bear” after he took my blindfold off, but never was told that I was in an igloo in Iceland. He was a bit scary to me; however, I do thank him for my authentic looking certification!!! I would live such an empty life without it! :)

I'm not a coda but somethin he said got me thinking and it makes sense, codas are not just hearing people who can sign, they are more conveyed to deaf people, it's not like they studied sign language and then got a degree and became interpreters, they actually have both cultures and the not hearing culture since they were born

You guys are funny! Thanks.

As a CODA I want to agree with about 0% of this video but something that struck me as pretty damn true is that CODAS are totally scared to take the NIC...

wow im a coda too but im stuck at the time and dont know what to do with it haven't used it in 3 years and even before that it was only here or there sometimes when i work a deaf person comes and ask for help thats cool but should i go out and try making friends or should i say forget it

@kapoof2 no, u really do have to go see a bear man named Bjorn.

They have both cultures as their own and they most also feel like deaf people too, so maybe they want to fit in with them more than everyother normal interpreter who is not coda but since they can hear deaf people won't see them as one of them but just as an interpreter mmmm that's interesting

Exactly - it’s a sucky place to be stuck in some days.... you don’t know unless you’ve been there

I used to think "dang, I wish I was a CODA so I could have great signing ability." But then I realized that being a CODA is more than just signing it's an entire lifetime experience and then I thought "hmm never mind ".
@hissywhistles15 жыл бұрын

Good watch, but as a CODA. Wasn't afraid to take the test or ask for help ;/ Though I will agree most are like that. Those I've met are very weird maybe its just the area you're from.

Im recently deafened as I lost most of my hearing in chemo during a breast cancer journey. I just started a youtube channel about african american hair styles in sigh language. I dont know how yall feel about new signers who sign but maybe you could take a look at my vids sometime and let me know. Im a new fan so I thought I would ask

@mariaebbeskog211910 жыл бұрын
That was without subtitles :-(
@kellinepickett497910 жыл бұрын
haha, you don't need subtitles, they're interpreting verbally. Besides, sign language isn't about converting each word to a sign, in fact, sign language is not about the English language at all, but rather concepts. So even though they're using sign, what their hands are saying is not what you hear the man speaking behind the scenes. He's interpreting the concepts that are being signed. Sign language uses a form of short hand, leaving out filler words like, "to" and "of" and "or" (unless it's needed as an emphasis and even then it's a lean of the body and not a signed gesture or word.) So even if there had been CC, you would have been confused if the CC matched their signs because the brothers are forming completely different syntax as is compares to the syntax formed in the English language. For example: We might say, "What's your favorite book to read?" and they would sign, "Like read, your favorite book, what?" There are also dialects within the ASL community so the word "cornbread" for one deaf is different than for another deaf in some cases. I hope this helps you to know that subtitles would only confuse you if they matched them to the signs, thus, an interpreter is needed to put their signs into English. It's almost like listening to Chinese and then rearranging it into English.
@mariaebbeskog211910 жыл бұрын
I need subtitles because I can't hear English and I don't know ASL or BSL. There are a lot of deaf and hard of hearing people who can't enjoy your videos. There are many deaf people who got deaf as adult and a few of them don't have cochlear implant and many hard of hearing people can't understand what they are saing especially people from other countries like me.
@mariaebbeskog211910 жыл бұрын
Kelline Pickett One more thing CC is not the same as subtitles.
@kellinepickett497910 жыл бұрын
Maria Ebbeskog Yes ma'am, you're correct. I just chose CC because it was quicker to type. haha, I got lazy, sorry.
@AnfoTyrant8 жыл бұрын
+Kelline Pickett ASL is not short hand english.

"This is a stupid show" "You owe me six minutes of my life back" "This is a waste of my time" "Oh, and you're jealous of Keith Wann" "He's funny and way too good" "You make the Deaf Community look so stupid" "You need to take a course called 'Keith Wann 101" If you think they make the Deaf community look stupid, take a look at how you're representing the Hearing Community. I also disagree with everything you said. (Even though it was a year ago)
