Am I the only one dissapointed with the lack of innovation in the world of ASL given the new advancements in Artificial Intelligence? The only videos about ASL and AI on youtube are from over six years ago ... Nobody is talking about using AI to make ASL more accessible.

It will take about... maybe 20 years or less for AI to understand a classifier. Too often, our signs are wide and varied for one sign. Voice has a linear language, which is pretty much easier to decipher for AI. ASL is much more challenging for AI. I don't expect AI to replace the live interpreter anytime soon! If AI takes over now, we lose our empowerment.

@@nomadicagent6311 I do see your point in the complexities of ASL as a language compared to other languages, but I am also eager about the opportunities to increase access to ASL resources and ASL conversations. I hope one day English speakers double learning ASL, and AI would be an amazing step towards that goal. BUT, despite all this AI craze, I'm not seeing anyone talking about AI! It's weird! It's like the videos of ASL and AI progress four years ago were just a ploy to get money and everyone is quiet now that real AI capabilities are advancing.

Awesome video. It's so natural for people to use language as a way to process things even when we aren't using it to communicate with another person. So it makes sense to do it in sign languages just like people doing it in English and other spoken languages.

I'm hearing and only learned ASL the last couple years so I often sign to myself to practice. Or sometimes I'm running back over a signed conversation in my head to recall what happened, etc. Normally it would be fine and it's nice to have a secret language that most people don't understand so you can say whatever you want. The problem is now I go to Gallaudet...yeah the secret language isn't so secret anymore. 😂😂 ~:~

I’m hard of hearing and wear dual hearing aids. I sign, but my wife and kids don’t since I can speak. I’ve interpreted for some individuals from time to time- and can say that from experience, there are some who shouldn’t have gone into that type of work. As in any profession : there are good and bad. I’ve interpreted at doctor’s offices, banks, schools and other places. I would never speak to anyone about the situation. It’s highly unethical. Not to mention no else’s business whatsoever. I was entrusted with the information, I do my best to maintain that trust.
