Oltree Review - Delightfully Charming....At Least For Now

I feel like I'm in the minority in that I really love this game and don't find replaying the missions dull after a few goes. I think the high randomness factor with the dice rolls and different event cards help this a lot. I also grew up with only 4 different board games for my first 20 years, so I may be a bit less prone to an easy boredom curve. Granted, I'm very much looking forward to new/other missions and will absolutely pick up the expansion when it releases.

I also like it a lot. The longevity is connected to expansions for sure, but I don't see much problem in replaying the same chronicles a couple of time or even more with a different group. There are some expansions already being developed btw.

I would love for this game to get an expansion that allows for a more procedurally generated (but sensible) chronicle, or a different ruleset that allows for gameplay that transcends the limited size of a chronicle and limited turn actions and turns it more into a full fledged pandemic game.

I agree with you on your points. Story is the main reason that made me play this game. I mainly play this game solo. I feel that letting others read something for you kind of break your immersion, though part of that is because they have to translate it to native language. Replayability is my most concern point for this game. I had played one chronicle twice but changed the character and difficulty level. The objective of my play was changed from the story to winning the game. It's still satisfying to beat the game though not as much as when you first played it. Still, I think I would keep it and continue to play it because it's an easy game to play and set up and can finish it quickly. Cant wait to see the expansion of this game.

"it's a 3.5 out of 4" well that's good enough for me then ;) Jokes aside i definitely gonna buy Oltree because the downsides don't scare me at all. I have limited playing time so it will take while before I finish the game. And it being a little on the lighter side also seems perfect for me and my girlfriend. Really looking forward to playing Oltree.

Oltree reminded me a lot of Bauza's previous coop game, Ghost Stories, but upgraded with story beats and somewhat easier. I think this is why I liked it, but I agree that this one is going to run out of content pretty quickly without expansions to add more scenarios.

Another recommendation for a game, if you liked Oltréé, would be Return to Dark Tower. Same sort of cooperative kingdom defense with not highly complex game mechanics against a variety of different events. Slightly less luck-based, as there are no dice for combat.

The tactic with Condrad is not broken. You can only discard 1 per turn by gaining over 8 fortress level. At least in my version lang of rules. So even Conrad can just use this ability once per turn.

This vid has some audio/vid glitches. periodically their will be a ding sound. At 9:26 the screen goes black for a sec. Also at 10:51, your over head cam seems to glitch as it makes a drilling sound. Just thought I let you know even though they are minor.

Hi Alex, thanks for all your hard work ! How does Oltree compare to Ghe Great Wall ? I have Oltree still in shrink, but being the silly person that I am I’m already ogling the meeple version of the Great Wall. I’d like to hear your thoughts on this dilemma.

How many rangers do you use for SOLO play and does using more rangers make the game easier to win? And does it make the game longer? Also… this game seems similar to Last Bastion with a “Pandemic” feel. Have you tried Last Bastion? Almost too similar… except no “story” in Last Bastion.

Man, comparing this to Unsettled is borderline cowardice. Unsettled is a 250$ game, while Oltréé you can find at less than 40$. Its like saying "Yeaah, I like the Toyota Corolla, but a Mercedes EQS 450+ is really your best pick". C'mon...
