Olympia SG3 - Comparing its font size and style with Olympia SM7 and SM9

Comparing the fonts of a 1970 Olympia SG3 (Serial # 7-2424672) with a 1961 Olympia SM7 (Serial # 1862387) and a 1965 Olympia SM9 (Serial # 2709842).

Thank you for this fascinating video. I have never seen a manual typewriter with print larger than Pica (10 characters per inch). I had no idea such a thing even existed. What a rare thing you have there in your SG-3!

Thanks so much for the kind compliment Angus! And I agree that finding a typewriter with a print so much larger than the standard 10 characters per inch is rare. Before I found this one I also had no idea they existed. I walked into my local secondhand store and saw it there on the shelf, the price was $9! I didn't have a shopping cart with me, and I was tempted to carry the typewriter with me to the cashier, but when I went to pick it up, I discovered how heavy it was (38 Lbs.) so I dashed to the front of the store to get a shopping cart and ran back to the display, thankful it was still there! I lowered it down into the cart, (standard grocery store size) and it just fit in! But it was when I took it home that I discovered just how amazingly well it works, it types smooth as silk, and I returned the carriage, I love the substantial "thunk" sound it makes when the massive carriage was shifted back into place. I notice that your SG3 has way less keys than a standard model with pica or elite typeface, probably to accommodate those ridiculously huge type slugs.

Where can I buy a SM9?

Hi, the SM9 is an excellent machine, available through online auction sites such as eBay and ETSY. But I bought mine in person from Kijiji, a local buy/sell site because I wanted to test the machine in person before buying it. Also, purchasing in person reduces the risk of damage occurring during shipping. Another in-person buying option is through local thrift stores. Good luck in your pursuit of an Olympia SM9...they are worth the effort!

You can probably find a solid working model for about $200 (including shipping) on online auction sites. If you find one in a thrift store, you will probably pay under $50...
