Dominique is such an ultimate pro that she was able to recognize that the gymnast/actress in the American Anthem movie was really doing her routine. That was Maria Anz, a collegiate athlete in that era who won the 1984 floor exercise individual Championship for the Florida Gators.

I would venture to guess it has something to do with strict diet and excersize routines and frequent health check ups, considering shes an olympian. But who knows, maybe its her skincare routine? maybe its maybelline?

The Vaseline on the teeth trick, my cheer coach when I was little used to make us do that 🙄 The idea was it would make your teeth slippery so it would be easier to smile but all it actually did was make it feel like you had gunk all over your teeth. Ah, the ‘90s.

Phil, I wasn’t even born for the ‘96 Olympics but watching Kerri Strug go back out and finish her routine on a bad ankle is beyond amazing and inspiring even now. Simone Biles should’ve watched that before deciding to quit on her teammates. She won’t be able to live that decision down. If she needs her pills to compete, to focus, then she shouldn’t even have been going to the Olympics. What I think she should do is not retire, and what she should do instead is come back for 2024 Paris Olympics to erase what happened this time around.

The context of that "Stick It" beam routine was important: The gymnasts had decided to flout the rules and traditions of the sport after one of their teammates had been penalized for a visible bra strap, which is why Weiwei was breakdancing instead of doing more typical movies.

I know something more then a Olympian. Never thought I would be able to say that….. There is men’s rythmic gymnastics. It is very popular in Europe, Russia and Asia just not America and is not internationally recognized yet by the IOC or has much appeal at all in the Americas.

I have to correct about the rhythmic gymnastics thing. In rhythmic gymnastics your aren’t allowed to to acrobatic stuff such as backhand spring, back flip etc. you rather do a cartwheel, walkovers stuff like that but no tumbling

Love Dominique, but I guess that she has not seen the whole movie American Anthem. If I recall correctly, the athlete was performing with a bad knee which is why she kept falling. I know that I have seen that movie several times because that was my era and we all loved us some Mitch Gaylord lol, but it's been a long time since I last saw it.

pretty sure it's the same as Figure Skating where it doesn't happen in Real life competition since the darkness makes it hard to see where you're landing. It's done sometimes in exhibitions or shows where gymnasts will do less risky moves so they're less likely to injure themselves. I guess they do it in movies to make it more dramatic.

I've seen American Anthem & the critique that was given to the floor routine was a little bit inaccurate. The character was fighting a knee(?) injury & fought her way through the routine. I would call it a "Kerri Strug" moment.

Also, rhythmic gymnastics for men is a big thing in japan and it`s amazing. I once saw a group of them live but you can see a lot of different routines on youtube, too. However, they do normally not use ribbons etc. as far as I know.

Girl in "American Anthem" is Maria Anz, 1984 NCAA champion and whole thing is her deliberately butched up Championship routine. I`m surprised Dominique didn`t know that, movie is well known among gymnasts of her generation.

Dominique first became senior elite several years after that movie came out. Maybe the 1988 gymnasts were more into it.
