As someone that's been doing this exact kind of pistol shooting here in Germany for almost a decade now (with a break in between) and competitively for a year, it's so cool to finally see people shed some light on it. Here in specifically rural Southern Germany that's our version of gun culture. Basically every village has an air gun pistol and rifle team that compete against each other in regional matches yearly. Age wise we have everyone from 13 year old girls to 80 yo bench rest Shooters that don't quit until they pass away. Sidenote, that Steyr you got is nice! Been shooting the lower tier version of that (Steyr LP-2 I think?) as a loaner for ages before switching over to Tesro guns which are made like 20 minutes from where I live lol. Really liking both tbh but I found the Tesro to be just a tad bit more to my taste weight and balance wise. On the topic of them being adjustable, everything you said rings true and even tiny adjustments can have a huge impact on your personal score. For me I found that even a marginally narrower rear notch helped me eleminate most windage errors during shooting and that a slight bit of pre-travel in the trigger helped me avoid "pulling" the shot on the trigger press. Excellent video once again and glad people are starting to give it some recognition after that absolute Chad of a Turk made headlines!

@marcelq53863 ай бұрын
@@trev5.566 You can't shoot em on your property for safety reasons and USUALLY you need a safe for proper guns. But since those have a limited energy and are proofed as "Free weapons" you just have to be 18 and store them in a closed and locked container to have em at home. Aka the case they come in with a little combination lock on the handles is enough to legally store em
@trev5.5663 ай бұрын
@@marcelq5386 That’s kinda a bummer, but at least you can keep them at home. I live in Texas and I remember I got a pellet rifle as a teen and I put like 5k rounds through it in my back yard (had a safe area with a high creek bank that acted like a berm). Air guns a basically unregulated. Here in Texas we have few gun laws; as long as you’re 18 and law abiding, you can own and carry any rifle or handgun you want. No licenses or permits are required to purchase or carry, and you can carry openly or concealed. I’ve been concealed carrying for almost 2 years now ever since the law changed when I was 19. It’s very peaceful and quiet here, unless you go to a city run by leftists because they let criminals out after they catch them basically. But it’s very interesting because air gun sports are not very common here, but other things like precision rifle, ipsc, 2-3 gun matches, skeet, are popular.

Ur tech presentation is also precise, fast talk, n no unnecessary repetition which i appreciated. Also ur emphasis on the basics were noted (adjustability to fit individual hand n preferences; all those Olympic competitor pistols of different makers n models r all equally good and only the individual skill makes the difference as to the winner, independent of their hardware**). I'm no near capable for an offhand pistol shooting for decades ( but did .22 Auto pistol Bullseye club competition at 25 and 100yds), let alone Olympic level. But i dink too many pistol shooters r afraid to use only his/her single hand and never thought about perfecting it. Combat style uses double hands. But single hand stance esp. at 50yrds would give a criminal/cooKoo a hard to hit target while u can hit his broad facing double handed stance (i would rather drop flat on the ground then w a double handed grip if the terrain is flat, no foliage/rocks/buildings between). For some reason, i recently perked up w a quiet air pistol to practice concentration down in the basement. ________ **Except mayb bc. of a pistol malfunction, e.g., air leakage, trigger pin got loose or a defective pellet unknowingly used. But then, it's the shooter's fault not inspecting the gun or rejecting the pellet B4 the competition. Thx for the video, Thumbs up n subscribed.

RE: grip angle - my situation is exactly the opposite, I always struggled with steep angle grips like 1911. I think it is important especially in the disciplines like AP or FP that the wrist muscles remain locked but relaxed, i.e. they are not pulling the wrist in any direction. Natural point of aim part of the shot process deals with lateral wrist position, but not vertical. I'm thinking about upgrading from my Morini 162EI (which I really like for its trigger) to Steyr for the ability to adjust the grip rake.

I shot a Steyer LP-10 for a while, I sold it and switched to a Morini 162-EI which I like better, but he’s right .. all the pistols in the 2k+ range will out shoot the shooter, for me I just like the looks of the Morini better, with my all silver LP-10 I felt like I was shooting a science fiction space gun from a movie, the Morini feels ‘classier’ to me, but it’s all subjective, and whether it’s Steyer, Morini, Pardini, etc. they are all masterpieces of workmanship and will outlast you. Another tip if your new is shoot a few weeks with the stock grip before you start shaping it down with files and sandpaper, when I first started out .. having been a firearms shooter .. the grip was very uncomfortable and I immediately ordered grip putty and some tools to shape my grip down to better fit my hand, but I waited and shot the pistol for a month, and by the end of the month my hand got very use to the grip and was very comfortable, and I never did end up shaping it, this also made it easier to resale on the Pilk classified forums, my LP-10 was on that forum for less than 24 hours before it sold .. and I took no loss. Anyone of the top pistols hold excellent resale value as long as you take good care of it. Good video here 👍

I can see how that grip could help accuracy. It wouldn't work for something like 3 Gun where its scored on times as much (or more important tbh)as accuracy, and I could see it taking microseconds longer to get hold of it, but in a spot thats purely scored on accuracy I can see how the weird looking grip would be an advantage.

Eight hours per day of practice? That's lots of commitment. The machining of that pistol assembly is beautiful. What kind of airguns were used before PCP became available?
@Patrick-8573 ай бұрын
In 10m they started with spring piston airguns for rifle and pistol. Originally they were simply accurised versions of the typical break barrels of the time. Feinwerkbau developed 10m rifles and pistols that were fixed barrel, side lever cocking and had the barreled action sliding backwards on rails to absorb recoil, with Diana and Anschutz also having recoiless springers for 10m. The most noticeable guns of this era are the Feinwerkbau 300s, rifle, the Feinwerkbau LP65 and LP 80 pistols, the Anschutz LG380, (like 300s, but with the entire barrel and receiver housed inside a ln outer shell, to hide the reciprocating anti recoil system) and the various Diana's like the Diana 75, which had a mind bogglingly complex opposing piston design with a rack and pinion to eliminate recoil. There's also the Feinwerkbau LP90 pistol which came out in the late 80s. It was a recoiless spring piston, pretty much exactly the same action as the original LP65, but it had an electronic trigger. They're rare. Then Walther came out with a single stroke pneumatic, where cocking a lever compressed enough air for a single shot. These had significantly improved performance over the springers when they came out, and spelled the end of the springers. Shortly after 10m became an Olympic sport, the springers started going away, in the mid 80s. Single stroke pneumatics were soon replaced by C02 guns for a short time, and then PCPs took over. The modern PCP is actually an engineering marvel, which is why it took so long to become mainstream in these sports. I own a Feinwerkbau 300s made about 1989, and an LP80. I think Feinwerkbau kept making them even in the early 90s. They are marvellous pieces of German engineering. Very reliable, very accurate, and exude quality. It's a shame they're obsolete.

There is indeed a hammer. It hits the valve on the regulator, which momentarily opens it and releases a measured amount of air into the breech. The metering system is quite precise, as one would reasonably expect for the price. The difference in velocity can be measured, but it is not enough of a difference to make a difference.
@DoNotPushHere3 ай бұрын
@@ixnorp4270 I know there is always a hammer on pcps but not all of them have regulator and I wonder about the regbecause some top pcps don't have it, stating that the hammer is so well balanced that there are 30-50 shots with less than 5fps difference. But on Olympics I thought maybe those 5fps are out of the envelope of acceptable performance. And on the other hand, cheap pcps sell their products with built in reg to advertise more precision, but the quality is lesser than those reg-less pcps of top quality

The top level shooters go to special facilities provided by the pellet manufacturers, where they will test every batch of pellets available in their specific airgun, and then buy many cases of the best batch. Every airgun barrel is different and will have a preference. Also slugs usually don't work well in springers. I'm surprised you got any kind of result. Usually they are too heavy and have too much friction in the barrel for springers, so muzzle energy is abysmal and there's not enough velocity to stabilise a slug. Slugs ideally need higher velocity than pellets. The other thing is springers, and in fact any airgun barrel designed for pellets, will have a choked barrel. If they work, then good for you. But I'd put them over a chronograph and see what kind of muzzle energy you're getting, because when I tested slugs, they cut my muzzle energy almost in half, and they were keyholing on target.

Tank is 200 bar, but what is regulator pressure? Or is it just with hammer spring to control speed? Is there plenum and what volume? What is barrel twist rate? Is it always wadcutter? So many questions...

It's almost certainly regulated. However these things are set up from the factory to adhere to ISSF regulations, so it's not normal for people to mess with that stuff. They shoot around 500fps. Wadcutters are always used in these disciplines to my knowledge.

I posted this on your last video but still haven't found an answer yet. What's the range of FPS for the .177 pellet in these pistols? Is there a limit on fps? Do you know what the average FPS of a pellet is during competition? I'm assuming the professionals have found a sweet-spot and that still allows many shots per fill. It's quite an interesting topic, lets say someone likes shooting at 250fps and another at 300 etc. Let me know and thanks for the video!

about 550 fps i believe

Great video, I have a question for anyone with experience on the 10m air piston, it is posible to change the color of the front or the rear sights? (I know it's technically posible I mean within regulation)
@JaredAF3 ай бұрын
Not sure about the ISSF rulebook but this is the CMP and it's supposed to be identical. Sights. Only open sights are permitted. Sights using fiber optic, light enhancing or reflecting color surfaces are prohibited. Optical, mirror, telescope, laser-beam, and electronically projected dot sights etc. are 19 prohibited. Sights may not be covered, and corrective lenses or filters may not be attached to the sights.

@@JaredAF Thank you, I will have to read the rule book carefully. I don't want any that crazy just a mate solid blue front sight it helps me focus on it, but it might be consider an unfair advantage.

@dwightlooi3 ай бұрын
Not too in depth really... you didn't explain how the pistol's firing mechanism works, how it meters air with each release of the trigger and how it maintains consistent velocity has the cylinder pressure drops, or how ambient temperature affects muzzle velocity and point of impact. Is there an internal step down regulator and expansion chamber to keep every shot at a consistent pressure? Do they all operate at the same pressure or do some operate at higher pressures with a shorter valve duration, while others operate at a lower pressure at a longer valve dwell per shot? Do people fill the cylinder with compressed air? Or do you go the extra step and fill it with dry nitrogen.
