We all know the reasons. Western nations adhered to the IOC's amateur rule, while Eastern Bloc countries always fielded their best players who were disguised as amateurs according to socialist norms.

edit -- was way off. i stopped bein lazy & went ova 2 wiki -- 'Age restrictions introduced -- Since 1992, male competitors have been required to be under 23 years old, and since 1996, a maximum of three over-23-year-old players have been allowed per squad' orig comment -- 04? 08? not certain. /wiki likely wuld giv a quik answer
