Beautiful analysis, Lance, and thanks so much for explaining the L grip to people. Only someone who knows the sport knows the truth of the matter: It's all about who has a really good day when it counts, in order to medal. Have you ever wished the medals went out more than three places?!

Glad you liked it. The are all so good these days. however, I was looking at Nastia Liukins set and she really had great style so may do her routine. If the medals went out to farther places, I am affraid they would lose their value the farther they went out so I am happy with the three medals tradition. For kids though, I like them to get something for their efforts to inspire them to try harder. Yes, so much depends on the day and I guess that part of the game hahah. All my best.

I found my way here via reddit gymnastics. Its so nice to find quality, informative commentary as its basically non existent !! So interesting about Qiu's grip change in her first kip to handstand -- something I definitely had never noticed before.

Can you analyze Shilese’s new routine from classic? She implements a layout jaeger, two pirouettes with different entries straight into a tkatchev in her new routine with a higher start value.

love it! This video answered a lot of my questions i always have in my mind! Can you please do an analysis for Tang Xijing on bars and balance beam? Even though both these routines are not as difficult as them but she makes the pirouettes so satisfying to watch!!!

They pick the children who have physical advantage right from the start so I would guess most are predisposed to be a bit more flexible. Aside from that- stretching the, until it’s relatively easy for them.

1. Healy: A healy can actually be used more generically to describe any turn occurring one hand. For example, when men perform a Diamidov on parallel bars, they are completing a Healy. Thus, any of the one-armed pirouettes on uneven bars are all technically healys. When a gymnast performs a Healy turn from reverse / undergrip and initiates the turn before reaching handstand, this is commonly referred to as a 'Lin' after Lin Li. This skill entered the COP following the 2004 Olympic Games, but is not currently named after anyone. 2. Ling: While the Ling is often described as a one-arm pirouette, this is actually not how the skill was performed and credited to Ling Jie. Here is the original skill description of the Ling from when it entered the COP after the 1999 World Championships: 'Handstand on high bar - giant circle swing forward in L grip with stretched body to handstand with hop to regular grip on one arm during 1/2 turn to inside and continue with 1/2 turn outward to end in L grip in handstand phase. If you look closely at the hands of any of the gymnasts that perform this element, you can see that this technique is still utilized today. In this video, pay particular attention at 2:35 and notice how she releases the bar with her left hand and then regrasps in regular grip. She then performs another 1/2 turn to return to L-grip, as opposed to rotating 360 degrees on a single hand.

Higgins and Healy are terms from the men’s gymnastics world. You are correct though, as it makes more sense to use the girls terms, although I prefer to describe the scale as it’s more informative than the name of the skill. I will start using more women’s terminology as it makes sense. Thanks and all my best.

Thank you very much. Someone else commented the same thing and I have corrected it already in the thumbnail. It may take me a bit longer to change it in the video. I was aware of the correct spelling, but obviously had a dyslexic moment ha ha ha ha. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
