Like maybe jump float service that people thought was out but it was in like Yamaguchi did, or block with face like Hinata did (?), Or some that happened like in Haikyuu match. For me I love how Hinata meets Hoshiumi. Hinata started volleyball because he watched the little giant play as a little kid. Now he's inspired once again. He looks so moved and happy after listening to Hoshiumi talk smack to that reporter lady.

I love the meeting, the big reason for Hinata's fire being ignited is that this is the Olympic candidate Little Giant that Kageyama played with and talked highly about to him (which to Hinata is a big deal, being his main partner). the fact that he went from a total beginner the beginning of the serious to someone who is actually in striking range to be on that level is crazy. and I love the pure display of the archetypal competitor's mindset in this show, you see aspects of that nature in every character and it's relatable and insightful. excited for you to react more

The absolute genius way that Hinata takes Hoshiyumi is that instead of being depressed that someone his size is *so* much better than him, he's *inspired* by him. There is *tangible* proof that someone their height CAN be a great Volleyball player and Ace. That's why Kageyama told Hoshiyumi that he was a good 'reference' because he knew how Hinata would take seeing him play. All of Hinata's hard work, all of his struggles have just been validated because Hoshiyumi exists. Just Brilliant writing.

I like that Sarah doesn't really like Bokuto, nice to see some differing opinions on characters every once in a while for a show like haikyu. And it makes sense because since you're a volleyball player, you're more likely to be annoyed by his antics due to viewing it from the perspective of a teammate having to deal with his mood swings while casual fans brush it off

I initially really struggled with Bokuto myself actually, despite not being interested whatsoever in Volleyball (until this show of course) so I was always confused at how many people loved him off the bat. I've always had issues with characters that have many obvious or major flaws and yet either has no introspection or is too proud to see them and then act like they are the greatest to ever live. Bokuto may not have been the worst example but he definitely falls into this category for me. He is honestly the last kind of guy I would want on my team because confidence is fine and all but dude, really? You're gonna self-destruct and throw a tempertantrum over the smallest of things, only to let YOUR TEAM suffer for it and pick up your slack for you?! So selfish! Don't get me wrong, I liked him off the court, being nice to others and teaching Hinata stuff and whatnot, but it was really nice to see Sarah have the same feeling about him that I had!

I also found it mostly funny and didn't really look deeply into it which is why it's so nice to get a different perspective.

@@4yinyang as a manga reader, Bokuto falls under neither of those categorys, its just that in every anime scene his been in so far the spotlight falls more towards Hinata or Karasuno. I am worried tho on how they will handled his character with the limited time they'll have in the movies for the rest of the story

They took the joke character and made him into one of the best written characters.

Bokuto reminds me of my best friend and former main climbing partner. Participating in sport with someone who has Bokuto's temperament is requires a lot management, but you can't beat the passion someone like that brings to the table. I really relate to the way that his teammates just laugh it off for the most part. You gotta take the bad with the good.

I love you noticing Suga changing throughout the series! In one of the interviews Furudate (the author) mentioned how Sugawara felt somewhat "ethereal" in the beginning, like this "pretty boy with a sad destiny" - apparently Furudate didn't feel like Suga was even their character because of that, so they "weirded him up" a bit xD

All characters have flaws and personality traits that make them more relatable and human . Bokuto is a great character because of the duality of his outstanding play and childish attitude.

@@shawn2538 you may find that he’s a great character but this is totally subjective. Objectively, his personality sucks. As an athlete, you’re supposed to work on your mental condition as much as on your physical condition. His mental condition doesn’t make him a good team player, as was Kageyama in the beginning of the story. But while Kageyama evolved on this aspect, Bokuto didn’t. His « good mood » solely depends if Akaashi will manage or not to cheer him up. (And by doing this btw, he’s more coping with his behavior rather than trying to improve it and making him understand that it is a toxic behavior). So yes that makes him an overrated character for me. It doesn’t mean he’s a bad character, but just that people are so biased they forget to see some aspects that are not so unimportant.

Hinata's smile and comment about being "so happy that I made it here" is one of my favourite character growth moments of Haikyuu. Previously Hinata would have been freaked out and dejected that someone his size was better than him, but this time he takes them as inspiration. The Ball-Boy training camp did so much mental development for Hinata.

I always laugh when you get frustrated with Bokuto 😂😂 I thinks most of the fandom finds him super charismatic, a fan favorite, so seeing your face when he starts moping for whatever dumb reason #71 is so funny 😂😂 I guess these kind of characters (ike Bokuto, Oikawa, Tendou, Hoshiumi (elf) or Atsumu) get lots of love because they make the anime more entertaining, but people like that, like in real life? omg please noo hahahha Day 2 of the tournament is peak fiction! I think it's bc we like them because we're anime fans and like those big personalities. But Sarah's POV is mainly as a competitor at the highest level, so part of it I think is different in that her perspective is how they are as competitors and how they'd be as a teammate or colleague. especially in beach volleyball where the chemistry between you and your partner is one of the most crucial things. you can see she has a clear respect for competitors like Kageyama, Daichi, Ushiwaka, etc/while not liking unpredictable/grating personalities like Tendo, Bokuto, and Oikawa. imagine being stuck with Bokuto for years, who's extra and super moody as your partner in what is your career job? compared to Kageyama, Daichi or Suga instead?

But as a cartoon character, I love both Bokuto and Fukurodani. When I was a kid, I was sad that we were the only different venue. I was depressed when we didn't play well. I was happy when my friends cheered for me. I felt great when I played well. Whenever I was down, my teammates always had my back. When my teammates were down, I had their backs. Bokuto and Fukurodani remind me of my youth. That's why I love them.

Bokuto is actually pretty common for some nba players. They don’t feel pressure playing in the finals but underperform against weak teams in the regular season. The reason you want them is because hyping that type up is easier than calming an anxious nervous player down.

Yeah exactly. The worth Bokuto adds to the team when he's hot far outweighs any on-court mental baggage he has that prohibit him from playing 100% all the time. The interesting thing with his team is that they are super flexible. They bend but don't break up until teams get comfortable seeing bokuto out of it only for him to come back swinging.

I loved this new perspective on Bokuto. He’s one of my favorite characters, but I can really appreciate Sarah seeing Bokuto almost more as a person (versus a character) despite not liking him as much because she’s pointing out the real implications of his mood swings. I love it!!

Bokuto's mental game is frustrating and annoying. Akaashi and the rest of the team are amazing for being able to handle him. That said, he does have his redeeming qualities. He's an idiot. It's not too difficult for his team to play him out of whatever funk he's in and he never really pushes back or lashes out. Akaashi also touched on it here. Others have mentioned it in past episodes. When Bokuto is on, it is incredibly satisfying. Knowing what Bokuto can do is what drives the team to hold on when things aren't going well and they seem to have near absolute faith that he'll deliver when they need him to. Fukurodani and Akaashi do a great job supporting Bokuto but they can only do it because Bokuto is Bokuto.

My favorite thing about this episode is how well it paints that vibe of being at a high school sports tournament. It really makes the story feel alive when you catch a glimpse of other teams like Nekoma and Fukurodani competing in their own matches and when you see what the Karasuno players are doing in their downtime. Some people might have preferred to just jump right to Karasuno's next match, but using the episode to set the scene and establish the mood was such a great call.

Karasuno's next opponent is Inarizaki (10:48). Many of the high school names in this story contain the names of animals such as cats (Neko) or owls (Fukurou), but "Inarizaki" dose not. However, the name Inari-zaki reminds us of foxes🦊. A fox is said to be the messenger of the Inari god (the god of good harvest), and fox statues are often placed at Inari shrines (Fushimi Inari Taisha, a World Heritage Site, is the headquarters of all Inari shrines in Japan.) On the other hand, foxes often appear in Japanese folktales as cunning animals that disguise themselves as people to deceive and tease people. Shrines are also spiritual places, and at night they sometimes give an eerie impression😨, like the setting of a horror movie.

It's understandable that Sarah didn't like our bokuto coz she saw bokuto as an athlete like her He is not just an ordinary volleyball player but also a captain of a team and ace. bokuto should be more mature and responsible but his personality makes ppl love him more. 27:51 Just wanted to mention this, cuz the angle was a little weird and not many people catch this or misinterpret it - Hinata was actually bowing to Hoshiumi (and smiled at him as we saw in flashback from Hoshiumi's POV when he is grumbling that people aren't freaked out enough by his skill 28:37 ) Can be interpreted in any way: Hinata wordlessly thanking to see his skill, thanking he got confirmation that being a little giant is possible, being shown there is much more space to grow etc etc the point here is that he had no fear or resentment towards Hoshiumi from seeing how good he is, but saw something to aim for/surpass instead

It's very hard to not like Kuro, he's pretty much the ideal senior player in a high school setting. He adopts introverts like Kenma, he's the tutor to the hot headed kids like Lev and Yamamoto, and he forms the ideal that Tsukishima needs to surpass. Bokuto though, it's totally understandable for him to either be a hit or a big miss. He's actually quite low on the general character popularity polls for the Haikyuu manga due to his personality and attitude being a wild departure from Japanese norms. But he serves as a radical ideal for athletes that only dream of soaring higher.

We are going to have to agree to disagree on Bokuto, lol - he's my favourite! I actually used to play on a team with someone like Bokuto and I loved it. I'm someone who has anxiety and can often take things too seriously. Having a teammate like Bokuto (with basically the opposite personality from mine) really kept me on an even keel and from getting in my head and in my own way. And just like with Fukorodani, the things that bothered me did not bother my teammate and vice versa, so we were a very effective support system for each other. I can definitely understand Bokuto may not be for everyone, but if I could play for any team in Haikyuu, it would be Fukorodani because I know that having someone like Bokuto around helps me to excel and to remember that I love the sport❤

I personally really like Bokuto's simple mindedness, but that may be because I'm one of his people XD Everyone acknowledges the value in someone like Akashi, who constantly thinks through every outcome of a situation, but there's also value in seeing your convictions through no matter what. That sounds pretentious on paper, but it's actually a lot harder than it sounds: to ignore distractions and keep your focus solely on what makes you happy, what leads to the most fun... it takes a lot of effort. When Bokuto gets down in the dumps over superficial things like crowd size or the like, it's mostly because he takes EVERYTHING completely at face value and isn't willing to compromise his own reactions: it DOES suck when nobody can watch you play. It is less fun when there's less people watching. These would be superficial concerns for most players, who are far more worried about actually performing well or how strong their opponents are, but for Bokuto they're vital to how much fun the game is to play. This will come up again in more detail later, but Bokuto's personal motto is, "Do what's fun, not what's easy." The advantage of this motto is that he is willing to practise hundreds of hours and hone his craft constantly because to him, it's what leads to the most 'fun'. No amount of effort is too much, no obstactle too great, if overcoming it or having it put behind him is the most 'fun' outcome. The downside is of course that there's ALWAYS going to be times that aren't fun no matter how much effort you put in, and if your only motivation is 'finding fun', these situations tend to cause a sort of paralysis. Bokuto isn't perfect, and I understand why people like him can be inconvenient and almost seem selfish, but I personally think there's value in people who are always looking forward in that way, even if it means they miss what's around them sometimes XD

The thing is - I love Bokuto, because you can see that he would've been an amazing, reliable player, was it not for all his quirks. I see them basically as a limiters or nerfs to not make our boy too OP for high school level voleyball. Frankly, I'm just enjoying the trope of "someone's who's basically invincible when he has a good day, but below average when he's not in the zone". I'm sure you're seeing it differently though, because you play this sport profesionally. I'm just looking at this from an aspiring author's point of view.

Bokuto is definitely a 0% energy or 100% energy guy🤣 In anime, He is such an entertainer but if there is someone like him in real life I hope there is someone like Akaashi in real life too! For this episode, When Hinata met Hoshiumi(Elf) I thought exactly like Suga and I was really worried about Hinata because he never met any player who has similar to his tall and play volleyball so excellent (I mean you can include Takeru from Wakunan but I think Hoshiumi had more influence on Hinata.) but Again, Hinata made me amazed by his thoughts. This boy grew up fast! Also, my one and only Suga. He is the funniest guy in the third year.🤣

The little things about this episode: Kageyama smirking because know he knows that Hinata saw Hoshiumi. Hinata getting a "closer look" because know we know he can see way more things after the training camp. The camera angle on Bokuto's straight making it look like he is actually bending the court, Daichi's cooler demeaner when he is talking to Kuro just so that he keeps looking cool enough even though by his own words "he was way more nervous than he though't he would be". This episode is a bit filler, I mean it kinda cuts in between matches a bit, but still, since we have been building all these characters up it is nice to see all those interactions pay off.

Naah, the Hey Hey Hey is the best of the series! And I think it’s awesome that he has those mood swings. And that list is good, cause it shows that it’s limited. It is way better to be like that, than to be affected by every little thing going on in the game. He NEVER gets bummed or angry if the match ain’t going his way, which helps his team stay calm. Way better than someone who gets moody for not being set to, or losing by a ton.

Although I personally love his catchphrase, I also totally get your take on Bokuto's mood swings. It makes it even more surprising that you selected him on your All-Star team instead of someone like Nakashima (Wakunan).

I haven't played any 'volley' sports professionally.. but even in football, I have done this drill as part of my personal practice, wherein I wouldn't hit a high wall from ground to top, divided in 5-7 sections, and I would try to hit those targets in repeated cycles. At a distance varying from 15-20 meters.

We have ALL dropped the "y-yeh" at least once. Also I found Bokuto a pretty good character as a genius player. The ones whos brains just dont work the same way others do. Actually played with some people with similar traits, strict pregame rituals, cursed jersey numbers ect yet freak athletes in other ways

I love Hinata in this episode meeting Hoshiumi, he didn't feel insecure but rather feel excited and just as Kageyama said, found a great reference. Even more special because if Hinata didn't make it to national, he won't be able to meet Hoshiumi (at least not this early) since Hoshiumi hates interviews. Meeting him as a first year in high school is a big deal, especially Hinata just started to develop his skills other than those quicks with Kageyama. To meet strong opponent we have to be strong enough to come to their place too 🥲

Fukurodani feels like such an enigma in the world of haikyuu cause of the fact that a lot of the highschool teams have an ace or duo that helps pull the team foward to improve and without them you can see the decline in some play. But Fukurodani is the opposite, especially when it comes down to bokuto. Him being in a slump dosent bring down the team. They are so used to it that panic dosent really set in and they simply do what they have to, setting up the field for bokutos come back in the process.

I love Hinata's reaction to Korai's play and Kageyama smiling, because they feel the same. They met players in similar situations playing better than them (Miya for Kageyama and Korai for Hinata). And it fires up both of our crazy little crows! It's hard not to like any of Haikyuu characters, there is always a moment, a scene that makes you understand and appreciate everyone. And yes, there will be a scene for Bokuto. But also, you are not wrong for loving his team, they are absolute beasts for reaching this level with unstable Bokuto and having his back every time. Especially Konoha))) I hope when the development comes you will understand Tanaka's point of view about relationships.
