For Kiyoko - I don't think she got injured (aside from, you know, the scars). I think it was in her final race, she made a mistake and lost. She couldn't deal with the loss at that time, realizing she had invested all of that time and love and energy into something that just ended like that. I see Kiyoko's story as a continuation of Winners and Losers and showing how you can grow out of a devastating loss

I like your interpretation! As I was checking some info in the Chronicles, I noticed that Furudate uses "akirameru" (give up, abandon) when describing Kiyoko leaving track. It's nothing too solid and can still be debatable, but for me it has the image of letting smth go by yourself rather than being forced to due to, say, an injury

Unfortunately, Tsubakihara's backstory was cut the from the anime so I'll leave it here: They had qualified for Nationals for the first time ever last year. But they got eliminated quickly in the first round because they couldn't handle the occassion. "It was like our feet were stuck in cement. We became short of breath. It was almost as if we weren't familiar with the ball or the game itself. Before we even realized it, we were already on the bus ride home." "The only two third years on our team, both of whom had carried us the whole way, were trying their best to fight back their tears. The rest of us had managed to next to do nothing, so the tears wouldn't even come."

Your editor is so valid for choosing the manga version of Kiyoko's jump for the thumbnail. Timeline-wise, Kiyoko's backstory was shown just a little past the middle of the manga, but those 2 wide spreads with her jumping over hurdles are still (imo) some of the best illustrations in Haikyuu, and definitely some of my favorites. The author was planning to dedicate a chapter for her more or less from the beginning, but, true to their fashion, they finished the draft only the night before the deadline and then ran on a mad dash to the gym, before their assistants came, to look for the place where she'd jump for a reference xD They also mentioned how technically she didn't even need to jump since she could just run between those barriers, but tensions were high, and she really just wanted to! Another tiny piece of trivia: Kiyoko's birthday happens to coincide with the date of death of Alvin Kraenzlein, who's known as one of the creators of the modern hurdling technique and was a very decorated athlete.

this ep always kinda makes me emotional whenever i see kiyoko's scenes. don't know if you noticed (you probs did) but when she was running back, she was talking about how she worked really hard, and it all came to a stop, in reference to track and as a manager. but she still had to make sure the team would be okay by entrusting the manager position to someone new. so when she came back to the stadium and threw the bag to hitoka, it was symbolism of her passing on the torch that was the team to her someone new. that's why i always get choked up watching this ep 😭😭😭

So much in that Kiyoko scene. I do not believe we were informed as to what exactly caused Kiyoko to quit though her scars did come from her trials there. But the scene was very similar to the Asahi scene where he overcame the wall where instead of crumbling to a hurdle, she over comes that hurdle emotionally, mentally and physically. The feeling of regret of nurturing something that you spent years trying to get to that you were not able to accomplish what you wanted turned to the final scene which is for all intents and purposes the passing of the torch/baton from the current generation to the next A truly great scene.

What I really like about them taking as long as they did to give us Kiyoko's backstory is there's plenty of time to spin up theories. Her being misunderstood or superficially judged is a recurring theme in the show so when we hear her backstory is she was an athlete but had no connection to volleyball I think it is a nice reminder of "Oh yeah, everyone has their own stories and reasons for why they make the choices they make." Not sure if I'm making sense or not, but anyway it's a story that leaves you desiring more and appreciating even more the bonds she has formed with different members of the team.

Hahaha I actually love Tsubakihara's headbands. They're very Japanese old school, but you could also say they're classic. The point of the ribbon is that it's a lot easier to take off and adjust by yourself. Old school all-male cheer squads in Japan took it further, they have a huge ribbon in the back from tying sone sort of cheering sash around their shoulders. I think it's meant to mimic the sash that the working class of ancient Japan used to keep kimono sleeves out of the way (not sure about this one, but it does look similar to it). The ribbon at the back isn't there for visual, it's just what happens when you learn how to efficiently and correctly tie the sash yourself.

Kiyoko's physical injury apparently wasn't that severe despite leaving a gnarly scar. It was more mentally taxing and scaring because she felt she hadn't done anything in her final year of Junior High and the disappointment of ending her season without forming a connection or doing anything. The dread of your season finally ending when you felt like you could have done more or didn't leave everything on your stage. That's why she relates to the guys so much because she understands the personal disappointment of failure.

Yess I was waiting for this moment since you already love Kiyoko's character 🥳 About Kiyoko's quitting hurdles, actually they never say it was because of the injury. In Japan we quit the club automatically after 3rd year, in Kiyoko's case in her junior high. After entering senior high, she was thinking about what club to enter then Daichi asked him to be a manager. The reason why she didn't choose to continue in hurdle or any other clubs, is probably because she was afraid of putting effort as she said "After practice, practice, practice and everything I had worked hard is ended up abruptly", and then she continued by saying she felt more at ease being a manager since she doesn't have to be the one that fighting. But then she changed her mind looking at Karasuno team members and found her way to fight, starting from preparing the banner for them in season 1, finding new manager, gathering info about the opponent teams and share it to the team (in season 3) and so on. I love how she changed her from "just helping as a manager when needed" to more actively involved in the team's growth. (At least that's how most of Japanese fans interpret from the story, because if it were because of injury, it would be more straightforward.) I love how Haikyuu makes everyone is a main character in their own story. There are a lot of manga and anime I've read/watch and Haikyuu is one of the best in creating this kind of side story, since I don't feel these as "filler". It just feel so natural to be included in the main story. The story of managers, bench members, other teams, coaches, teachers, family members, neighborhood association, even the crowds watching like the old man came to the Shiratorizawa's match 🤣 it adds so much depth to the main characters development.

One of the many reasons I love Haikyuu! happens in this episode. Furudate-sensei never fails to highlight a team's support system, and I love that they chose this moment to put the spotlight on Kiyoko. She really is a queen, and her and Hitoka's influence on each other is evident. I love the "passing of the torch" in the bag throwing. Kiyoko may have left hurdling, but she made a way for Hitoka and Karasuno to run. To answer the question you posed: I would choose Suga as my pinch server due to his consistency. Not to fault Kinoshita at all, but Suga has shown more consistent serving overall. He seems to be able to hit targets well, and while we've seen Kinoshita work on that (as observed by Yamaguchi), we've yet to see it happen in a match with high stakes. Thank you for your reaction. I died laughing when you compared Teradomari to "a bale of wheat."

I absolutely love the battle lines concept shown to us through Kiyoko. yes when we see Kiyoko believing in herself to jump the that hurdle at the end and then symbolic passing of the baton (bag/responsibilities) to Yachi. Suga or Kinoshita, hmm, I am tempted towards the float serve by Kinoshita but I think I will go with suga at the end because he has pin point accuracy in his serves and doesn't miss in pressure situations, plus we get 2 setters combo with kageyama.

Personally I like Kinoshita for second pinch, not because of serving skill directly, but because I absolutely love the other things Suga can bring to the team when he's put right on the court and think he's better served by going in as a more general sub for a few rotations to change up the team's rhythm and throw the opponents off. That said I suppose theoretically they're not mutually exclusive ideas so perhaps I'm for Suga after all?

Cried a little watching Shimizu's part again.😢 I feel bad for the Tsubakibara boys. I mean, they were only trying to get themselves in the most positive mindset possible in order to face the upcoming match since they seem to have a major problem with nerves. & she says if they're going to wear hachimakis/headbands then they should let the ends free & flow "samurai style", but the loose ends would surely get in the way while playing? & players in real-life Haru-Kou games who choose to wear hachimakis usually wear them that way, so it wasn't like they were being "weird" about it...

So that's why you wear those glasses! Also, the bumps are goosey? Or is it the goose is bumpy? 😆 It's the first time I've heard of that. Hahaha. Great reaction as always. Thank you!

10:20 In my opinion, there is two ways to think about Kiyoko's case: One is Kiyoko got injured and she couldn't help but had to give up the sport she love. At the time she healing herslef, she joined the volleyball team. Second is Kiyoko didn't got injured but she couldn't endure the fail or loss anymore after had put so many effort still not payoff. I think she was so quiet and didn't have friend to share the emotion is also the reason she quit. Too many pressure but no where to go. I feel she is option 1 when I watch the show. But the perspective I got from others about she didn't got injured is also persuade me. No matter which it is, the scene she jumped over the railing is such a HUGE one for me. I cried a lot after saw Kiyoko's back stroy.😭 I got a huge fail and give up something at that time. Then I saw this epsiode. It really save me. I grateful about it. The line she said "It's not that I am adimitting defeat. It's not that I'm saying we are going to win." really got me! And the meaning I saw in other language translated about this line is more like "I don't have the thought about what is the complete lose or complete win." This translation really hit me strong. Just a side note~ Even though the animation in season 4 beacuse of lots of reason didn't have as high quilaty as last three seasons, I still appreciate everyone who put their effort to make season 4 come true. Hinata's boy ball sotry line and Kiyoko's story line are really impact to me. Help me overcome ordeal when I had the tough time last fews years. By the way, About the scene that Kiyoko throw the yellow bag to Yachi. I heard the great explain from other reactors who watch this episode. They said this is like pass on the torch.😭 Last but not the least, Thanks for your reaction and your reading about this really longggg comment~ Have a nice day! 💫

Between Kinoshita and Suga for the pinch serving, I'd probably go with Kinoshita for this match now that Kageyama has gotten zeroed in. Suga is so dependable that we can rest assured he'd perform well in future matches, but Kinoshita is pretty much untested at this point. Seeing how he fairs in a real match where the opponents, while not bad, aren't the toughest we've faced would be a good test to see if there's anything he'd need to improve on for an even more clutch moment. But if we absolutely needed the pinch server to pull out a W, I'd probably lean more towards Suga. Not only because he'd be more dependable because he's had the chance to prove himself on the court, but also because he's a third year and I'd like to give him a chance to fight if it seemed like it could be the last game they play.

27:00 You know, when I first watched Haikyu this seemed ridiculous. Now that I've watched a lot of pro volleyball it makes perfect sense because I've seen it happen so many times.

I think its likely Kiyoko fell incorrectly and fractured something, would take long enough to recover for her season to be over. Never really gone into I believe. But I guess if she hit hurdles regularly like she said prior and then having a bad injury, would lead to lack of confidence or maybe parents stepping in. Like others have said its up for interpretation to a degree. Also youll see alot of animation inconsistencies and oddities from here on till late season, Ukais hairband is a redflag.

I was thinking Kiyoko wasn't feeling like she was doing the best with hurdling, feeling down every time she knocks one down. She probably did want to pursue that dream, but felt like she wasn't good enough, so she decided to try being a manager instead.
