Very sad to hear of the passing of Peter Snell, a great Olympic champion and a great Kiwi.

Peter Thomas' voice...... so awesome...

That's not Peter Thomas, I don't think. Sounds like Bud Greenspan's Olympiad series and that narrator was Greenspan's brother

Funny how the voice who dubs Roger Moens has a French accent. Belgian Roger Moens is Flemish, thus speaks Dutch - not French.

Herb Elliott was always my favourite middle distance runner but in my heart I felt Snell would have beaten him if both were at their peak. iIn fact Snell HAD beaten Elliott and Tony Blue over 880 yards in the run up to the Rome Olympics. Elliott was just a year older and he always stressed that his other ambition was to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games in his home city of Perth. By the time those Games came round Snell had broken his world mile record and also held the half mile/800 metres record. I feel that Elliott felt discretion was the better part of valour and decided to call it a day with his undefeated mile record intact

If Herb had kept training, he would have been running close to 3min 50sec by 1962, and Peter could never have got anywhere near that!

A part from Ryun, virtually every record holder at the mile/1500m improved by over 4 seconds from aged 20 to 25, and most statistics say that a 3min 36sec 1500m is equivalent to a 3min 53sec mile. And, of course, I'm sure you know that Elliot hardly trained and didn't run internationally in 1959, AND he arrived in Rome in 1960 without the amount of training required to tackle the Olympics but almost my strength of will Herb won the Olympics and set a new world record. Had Herb trained progressively through 1959 and up to the Olympics, I've no doubt that he would have run 3min 33 sec. Snell, don't forget, is the same age as Herb but he didn't start breaking world records until Herb had been retired for two years!
@raferjohnson15 жыл бұрын
@@musik102 Herb actually retired in 1962 after losing an 880 and pulling out of the mile in a universities meeting by which time Snell had already broken the mile record. By his own admission herb used to smoke copiously when not in training which i find incredible

Rule #1, Do not let anybody pass by you inside. They must get around you. The second placed runner made great mistake for pulling out to the second lane in the finish.
