In an extremely close finish to the 4x100m men's freestyle France comeback to take the gold medal just ahead of USA and Russia.
The event took place at the London aquatics centre, 24 July and saw American Michael Phelps claim one of his 22 Olympic medals.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Lezak should have been the anchor. He swam the fastest split in the morning prelims, and was there to do one event. This one. Not 42 events like Lochte. Hell Lochte doesn't even swim the 100 regularly and had already swam a lot in that Olympics. Lezak is also clutch, old, but still fast. The US coach and his favoritism towards Lochte (he is Lochte's personal coach as well) cost the US. Lezak v. Bernard part 2 would have been epic, instead of Lochte choking and flailing away the US chances at gold

I agree that Lochte probably isn't the greatest guy to have on a 4x100 relay, but you have to consider that Agnel's split of 46.7 is ridiculous. Would Lezak have been able to hold off that? It's hard to tell.

Emil Aliyev Yeah I know, but that incredible split was 4 years prior to this. Lezak was 36 by this Olympics and went 48.04 in the prelims......all I'm saying is, it is very debatable that Lezak would have done what Lochte couldn't and hold Agnel off.

Notice how in 2008 the USA never talked trash to the French, and even after they beat them did not do anything to try and humiliate the losing team. And notice how in the London Games, it seems like every single French person is talking trash about the USA. That's under the same circumstances as 2008. Just pointing it out.
@jayzinho1885

Trash talking about our rivalty is stupid (I'm french). We lost in 2008, won 2012 and 2013, let's see what happens next and enjoy. It is always a great entertainment to watch this battle between the best of the world and that's it. Sport > all of us.

Sam Shin It's a pretty normal reaction actually. Not that it's good sportsmanship or anything, but the truth is that the USA expects to win swimming events, especially this race, which they used to win (Until 2000) almost every single Olympics. It's not necessarily normal for France to really be a swimming power until the last decade or so. They were so disappointed in '08, and regardless of their behavior afterward, they did indeed get their revenge in '12. I wish they would've been classier about it, but like I said, it's pretty normal that the USA would have been more relaxed about winning while the French would have been more boisterous and vocal about it. Everything is relative.

What is the most amazing is that Agnel swam exactly the same time as Bernard did in 2008. In 2012 Agnel came back on the American Lochte, in 2008 the American Lezak came on Bernard !! Bernard swam very well in 2008 but he was unlucky to swim against an E.T. that day ! Anyway it was a sweet "revenge" for the French team.

I agree that the other Frenchmen did great. I'm just saying that Agnel swam much faster than anyone could have expected. If you had told the U.S. coaches beforehand that Lochte would dive in with that lead and then go 47.7, they would've been thrilled with how their lineup worked out.

I just found the result of swimming at the 2012 Summer Olympics - Men's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay on wikipedia that shows the results of Yannick Agnel who helped France get the gold medal over USA it shows that trailing behind by 0.55 seconds at the final exchange, Agnel blistered the field with a remarkable split of 46.74 to deliver the foursome a gold-medal time in 3:09.93 which means Agnel was swim faster than the 100 metre freestyle champion even faster than the 100 meter freestyle world record (46.91)
