Joan comes to Green Bay, Wis., every year to run in the Bellin Run 10K. She's still incredible. Ran 39:14 (6:19/mile) in 2013 to win the 55-59 age group and 40:17 (6:29/mile) in 2017 to win the 60-64 age group. Very gracious with fans as well.

She's why I run to this day. I remember watching the Olympics in 84 on the television and was inspired to believe in myself and when I run its just that me and the run.

i remember '84 olympics like it was yesterday. my favorite of all time. i know it was boycotted but i still believe if they weren't usa would've still dominated the olympics like we did! i think the most loaded talented athletes of all time. both men and women teams were stacked with talent. mary lou won the all around gymnastics gold, our boxing team was the greatest ever assembled, the great carl lewis, roger kingdom on hurdles, joan in womens marathon i mean the list goes on and on! what a team!! God bless USA!

I am 69 years of age, I will be 70 in November. I was transferred to Los Angeles by my company in 1983. I witnessed 21 events that Olympics, but this one yes this one was my finest moment. I was in the stands.

I ran XC/TF in college (2011-15). For the media guide & roster there were "get to know the athletes" questions. One was favorite athlete. Mine is, was, and will always be Joanie. My family and I, all 4 generations, still run... a lot!

I believe it was 2015, Joan at 57, ran the CRIM 10 mile race in 60 minutes flat, 6:00/mile. The CRIM isn’t an easy run, known for its killer steep mile beginning before the 5 mile mark and ending just before the 6th, with many other hills mixed in. A running icon and Champion runner her entire life.

I have to admit that I no longer remember watching any of the other events, not even Coe's 1500m, but I vividly remember watching this one -- amazed at her performance and cheering her on through the TV. Was there ever a tougher runner, male or female?

I'm pretty sure I remember her leading more or less from start to finish in the marathon at Seoul four years later (matchsticks propping up the eyelids time watching in the middle of the night again here in Britain).

No. I'm a dude who ran DI XC/T&F class of 2015. In the media guide I stated that my favorite athlete was Joan Benoit Samuelson. Toughest, most do or die competitor ever. My wife is a teacher in the LAUSD and we are both help with Students Run LA, which helps inner-city youth by training for, and completing the LA Marathon. Joan is a LIVING LEGEND! Some of the runners even kiss the track at SMC.

Lest anyone forget, Benoit had had acl surgery just 4 months before winning Olympic gold… all the more impressive a victory!

The script and Lee Holdredge’s score are obviously meant to manipulate emotions, but I am still moved every time I’ve seen this; I love the pre-race ceremony - a nice touch I assume that came from Peter Ueberroth - to mark the first womens’ Olympic marathon. I’ve read Joan Benoit say how stunned she was to enter the LA Coliseum to the huge roar of the capacity crowd (remember, this was about 11:00 am; no track finals happening). And a Who’s Who of early women’s marathon superstars: Joan Benoit, Grete Waitz, Rosa Mota (loved her reaction to finishing third), Ingrid Kristiansen, Lisa Martin, Lorraine Moeller (in 1992 she finished third at age 39). And how can you not love Joyce Smith - a marathon pioneer - cheered on by the not-much-younger Priscilla Welch? And what seems like a post-race party as most of the ladies just seem happy to be part of this historic occasion. Rightly so.

A lot of people forget that Benoit was the first American Olympic marathon winner who actually entered the stadium first.

What a weird thing to say. Why would they forget? She was so far ahead, assuredly no one was entering before her.

@C B S in 1904, another competitor who had dropped out of the race and hitched a ride to the stadium pretended to still be in the race. His ruse was discovered just before the President’s daughter was about to hand him the gold medal. In 1908, Italy’s Dorando Pietri was disqualified for receiving assistance from race officials who were, for nationalistic reasons, trying to prevent an American runner from winning. Only in 1972 was there a genuine imposter in the race.

With the focus of the women's race diminished by coverage of the men. It's fine with separate races, both get the glory they deserve.
