When I was a little girl, Kristi was my idol. I talked about her to everyone. One year we went to one of those skating shows, like Stars on Ice, etc. I was sitting in on the outside seat when the skaters came up the aisle. Out of all seats, Kristi down mine. I was so excited!

Is this an overlooked performance in Olympic Women's Figure Skating history? I find it absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing.
@annep.1905 Жыл бұрын
Yamaguchi was a phenomenal skater. She, and skaters like her, are why I dislike modern skating with its wildly flinging, ungraceful limbs and constant jumps. Skaters can jump more than ever now, but if you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Well they just announced she's getting her own Barbie with the same outfit from this performance. So I guess it's still being recognized. ❤

@@annep.1905 There is a natural elegance to her posture and movements which many skaters do not have. She was a beautiful beautiful skater.
@annep.19058 ай бұрын
@@damianop100 She had greater flexibility and balance than many skaters, and I believe she also took ballet. I think it was her understanding of balance, core control to obtain it, and being in tune with her center of gravity that contributed to her gracefulness. Some people do not seem to have a natural awareness of how to use their stomach muscles to support their core. The ability to use those muscles greatly improves balance and poise.
@damianop1008 ай бұрын
@@annep.1905 How fascinating. Did you know Kristi was born with bilateral clubfoot, had casts on her legs for much of the first year of her life, and then wore corrective shoes connected by a brace for the next year? Makes her achievements all the more remarkable. I adore her.

Sometimes a little luck in anything goes a long way. Kristi always knew Midori would make or break her gold medal chances. In this case, Midori's mistakes became Kristi's gain. One slip in the LP here, but she still won. In 98 Olympics in Nagano, Michelle Kwan didn't fall and got Silver.
@singsongeric2 жыл бұрын
@Novak D I think the point is that Midori was 4th after the SP so Kristi knew she had the gold in the bag even if she lost to Midori in the LP. Her mistake on the 3L and doubling the 2S wasn't going to cost her the gold. But anyway, the point is moot because Kristi won the LP that night.
@flightoflightning25057 ай бұрын
@@singsongericIf Ito were to win gold, Yamaguchi would have to drop to 3rd in the Free Skate. Who would fill the second slot? Because everyone else skated so poorly.
@tattoofixerstattoos25 күн бұрын
@@flightoflightning2505 based on the skating that night nobody. Hypothetically? Harding if she had a performance anywhere near her 91US National or 91 Skate America could, especialy with Kristi's mistakes. Maybe Nancy Kerrigan if she by some miracle landed all 7 triples or atleast 6 of the 7 she had planned, but as if when in her career the best she made was 5, and she didn't do that for the first time ever until fall 93. Obviously nobody else ever, definitely not Bonaly, young Chen, Sato, Preston, a German, Hubert.

I totally get why she likes Yuna. Her performance is absolutely stunning in a way that reminds me of Yuna. And some of her elements were also ahead of time. I just feel like she’s not valued enough by the U.S. audience at the time.

I read somewhere that it was one she was having trouble with. I think after the touchdown on the triple loop she played it safe. Still one of the best most memorable Women’s free skate performances.
@chortkiv17 ай бұрын
The Salchow was always her bete noire and sometimes she was shaky on the loop as well. I guess edge jumps weren't her thing. But her toe jumps were perfect. Double Axel too.

@DavinaAddit Ito was always retiring after 92, and Tonya was completely done after this season and even by the 92 worlds, never a contender again. So that shouldn't have mattered to her continuing or not.
