This was a remarkable game, no question about it. As for the "most heart wrenching hockey game", that belongs to USA Canada final in Salt Lake. The Canadian women had to contend with a good team and very biased American referee. The interview by Wickenheiser at the end of game was inspirational.

I don't think Szabados got all the credit she deserved for that game. In the first minutes of overtime, she saved 3 very hard shot. The last one, in particular needs some comments. The shot from Bellany was unnatural in the sense that normally she should have shot to Szabados right's side. It went on her left side instead and Szabados made a nice save with her pad. The puck was then lying in the blue circle with Stack ready to flip it inside the empty net. But Szabados stretch her leg and pushed the puck just enough to put it out of reach of Stack. Crazy good, as Cassie Campbell said.
@Moda-pf8wt3 жыл бұрын
She deserves a lot of credit. When your goalie robs the opponent, you have to answer to it. This easily could have been 5 nothing heading into the second period. Price made a similar stretch save (toe save) against Auston Matthews in the 2021 playoffs against the Maple Leafs in overtime. Szabados is such a clutch goalie.

So much to say about the tie tying goal, 1- Poulin anticipated well the pass from Marvin to Chue. She managed to arrive to the the puck along the board before Chue. Than she protected the puck with her body. She gave a little push on the puck to put it away from Stack and Johnston got it. Nice passes from Johnston to Irwin to Wickenheiser. The best play then would it be to give it to Ward. The puck went on the other side. Nice reaction from Ward. The 5 us players went from on side to the other side. Irwin did a good job while she was circled by 4 US players. Irwin to Johnston and then, nice luck for Canada, to Poulin from the goalie. At the same moment, Duggan made a move to lift Poulin stick, But, because the puck arrived on the Poulin right's side, Duggan lift the air leaving Pouilin free to handle the puck Then clutch finish, as the analyst said, for Poulin.

I'm a Canadian that watches football daily and no he did not. He did as poor a job as fox sports did with the champions league last year. Canada beat the USA under 5 times in 8 years but always wins Gold including the Olympics. This was a big a goal for hockey Canada as Crosby or Eberle, Hailey wickenhieser has been winning gold medals for 16 years and won yet another one to end her career. This was atrocious.

Unfortunately, they lost in 1998.
@TheIrishEnigma10 жыл бұрын
mgraysonhay Blah, my bad. Though I still maintain, the pressure is still a lot more for the women. They're playing on the same rink as the cream of the NHL and other world tier leagues, even though it's clear they aren't playing on the same level. Not to mention, the men are psychologically conditioned for this, they've spent years with cameras watching every game, every single thing they do is subjected to millions and millions of people actively watching at home. The women don't really get that, and if there are cameras, not a lot of people are watching normally compared to your standard NHL game.
Actually, the USA women won the first Olympic Gold in hockey back in 1998...

Lol im from Canada and I went to the USA to play in a tournament in Manitoba (note: 14 is the max age to be in bantam A girls team) my hole team is 14 and 13 years old, so we play bantam A we had to play against a fricken American team that was made up of 19 year olds and one of them was almost 20 years old! The reason why is because if we played against a team that was our age it would be to easy for us Canadians to win and to hard for American teams to beat us. So we had to play teams that would actually be a challenge to beat. And on top of that one of the American teams were cheating by kicking the net out of place whenever we were gonna take a shot at the net, and the officials didnt do anything about it! They didn't get a penalty or anything!!! And we still played really well even though we were playing against 19 year olds

Great game, and although they are both talented teams, Canada really was lucky to come back in that game. 1. The 1st Canadian goal from a shot that goes in off a defenders knee. 2. The referee who interrupts the play giving the U.S the puck which then they hit the goal post on the empty net. 3. The 2nd Canadian goal, the U.S goalie made a huge error by deflecting the puck out to the slot rather than covering off the pass down low. 4. The "slashing" penalty that gave them the even up call in OT 5. The non call penalty shot but instead giving them another penalty. Yes there is skill in scoring and making plays. But you have to be lucky sometimes to create those opportunities and the hockey gods were definitely on Canada's side that day. Thats hockey :)

GameOfThronessss I find the women's game is actually more pleasant to watch. I think they should change the rules of the men's game to match the women's.
@peaceharmony41159 жыл бұрын
felix r Oh, I doubt my suggestions would carry any weight. I just find the game to be more fun to watch when checking can only be performed while playing the puck. If the men's game were played with that kind of rule, I think it would be enhanced as well. The immediate consequences of such a rule change is that you have a lot less time spent in the boards, and a puck movement that allows for much more open play.
@peaceharmony41159 жыл бұрын
felix r Yeah, I know the more violent aspects of the game are popular with many fans. A lot of people were really pissed when the NHL first clamped down on in-game fighting, and to this day some think it was a mistake to do so. I still run into some fans who watch hockey primarily in hopes that a fight will break out. (I don't understand the appeal of this, myself. Yes, we all know how tough hockey players are. But it's hockey we're watching, not boxing.) But the result over time was that the game became more popular. Imagine how much more beautiful a sport it would be, given the skill level of the best men in the world, if checking were reserved for when the puck was being played. (Again, it's not that checking is forbiden in the women's game, just that it's only allowed if you're actually trying to play the puck.) It's not like the game wouldn't still be extremely physical. And I think we'd see much more technical, tactical, and fluid play as a result.

The cross check call was also laughable. Tripping surely. And should have been a penalty shot. She was clear through and regardless of the "weak contact" made, if its enough to take a way a breakaway and a clear chance on net its penalty. Capitalized on the powerplay thankfully.

@@Haggart9 How can you compare the cross check on ward with the slashing call on Lamoureux? The ward call had to be made…it was a high hit…the refs don’t want to call anything in OT, but that one was obvious and had to be called. The slashing call was a complete joke! Nowhere near even the same ballpark to compare those 2 calls!

If you didn't watch the game live, you are not a fan. If you are becoming a fan by watching the game, I get it. I knew the outcome before I watched it again. Still awesome.

Something is bugging me since i watch this video. The commentators were hard on Agosta for a chance missed. First, they blamed her, second they praised the goalie, but they totally missed the critical play made by Duggan. We see it very clearly on the replay at 44:57.
