So the British once again had the right to be proud when the City of London, the capital of England, had the honor of hosting the Summer Olympics three times in 1908, 1948 and 2012. It was wonderful. England has organized the Olympics in the most thoughtful and effective way. Unbelievable. Congratulations.

WW2 put the Olympics on hold. Things were run on a shoestring because the postwar cleanup was still going, earning it the nickname "austerity Olympics". Still, everyone must have been glad to have the Olympics back. Germany and Japan were banned, and I don't think they would have been popular anyway. Japan was a bit upset about it, but Germany took it quietly.

Out of the 58 countries gathered at this Olympic Games 57 of those countries dipped their flag in the opening ceremony as a salute to the king of England. The United States was the ONLY country to hold its banner true the entire time. When asked why the flag bearer of the United States said “these colors bow to no earthly king.” Greatest Olympic moment in history.
