I like your videos but I don't like brick wall tests for sharpness.. haha. I can't really see much difference in them. I'd rather a landscape photo or studio chart to see sharpness.

Thanks for doing this... I was very curious about this combo... the focal range of this lens seems to be extremely practical... exciting times for micro four thirds... have a good week...

Good job! Both lenses are phenomenal. There is one in between, which I like as well. It is the Panasonic Leica 8-18 f/2.8-f/4. It is lightweight (315 gr) and I like the 2.8 at 8mm, while 4 doesn’t bother me at 18mm. So I would add that one as part of the equation, as it works with Olympus bodies great as well. However, for Olympus bodies the new 8-25 with the new firmware update adds the focus stacking function, which is cool sometimes and the lens has surely fantastic optics and even more reach, making it a 50mm full frame equivalent as well. So, I will certainly consider it. Have a nice weekend.

Since the 8-25 has all the advantages including size, weight, more versatile zoom and a lower price. The only advantages of the 7-14 are the slightly wider field of view and, particularly, its f2.8 aperture.

What a well thought out lens by OM!!! Nobody else is doing it really. 16-50 mm f4, solidly weathersealed, corner to corner sharp, distortion and fringing under control and on a stabilised body like the EM5 mk3. What a package!! Pair this with the 17mm f1.8/15 f1.7 Leica or the new 20mm f1.4 and you are done really. The upcoming 40 to 150 mm f4 completes a tremendous system. I hope that lens will be dual IS compatible.

Nice episode as usual, I've got the 12 100mm so I'm not surprised by the quality and rendering. For the wide angles, I have a laowa 7.5 f2 and the 9 18mm, it would be interesting to compare these 3 together with the 7 14mm.

I appreciate you doing this Jimmy. I'd be interested in comparing the 8-25 against the old 9-18. I know it's not a fair fight, but I'd like to see how much more performance you get from a "Pro" lens vs a "Premium" lens.

I have both, and despite the similarities I use them in very different situations. The 7-14 I use almost always indoors and when I really need super wide angle. The difference between 7mm and 8mm should not be neglected. The 8-25 is my choice outdoors and when I want to change lenses less and use a filter. If I had to choose just one I would choose the 7-14mm without a doubt. I recently bought the Leica 9mm f1.7 which is amazing!! Compact and perfect to take on trips following the 12-100mm!

You should really compare this lens to the Pana/Leica 8-18mm as they are very similar. Comparing the 8-25mm to the 7-14mm is like comparing the 40-150 to the 150-400. They're different lenses for different purposes. The only reason to have a 7-14mm lens is if you really must go as wide as possible and don't use filters. I have the Panasonic 7-14mm as a backup lens for real estate photography and it is useful for small bathrooms, but the 8-18mm is my workhorse lens for landscape and real estate photography and I don't use the 7-14mm often. The 7-14 is fun for photographing dogs though because it adds even more extension distortion, which makes them look even more cartoonish!

Considering the f4 version and not needing a lens for low light situations, Which lens would seem more valuable for Landscape or other things on that end of 8-12mm? I'm trying to decide between selling the 12-40 since it seems to have the same sharpness as the 12-100 plus its pro-grade and works with my Em1mk2 with the additional IBIS. A suggestion or opinion, sir...?
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 3 жыл бұрын
In fact that 1mm at the wide end is a whole brick in your comparison. 6.5 bricks compared to 5.5. That is quite a bit more of a difference than I would have thought. It is patently obvious that there is a very substantial difference at the longer end of each lens. After all, one is a 2X and the other a 3X zoom.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I am shooing at 1m from the wall. In real use, if you are shooting landscape with things are at infinity, you don't see the difference as much as this.
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 3 жыл бұрын
@@Red35Photography I'm not sure I agree with that. Surely as the range increases and field of view widens, the difference will increase, not decrease. Both will be relatively wide of course but the percentage difference, which is surprisingly large against that wall for a 1mm difference in notional focal length, will remain constant. So if you were far enough away to show 55 bricks across one focal length, the wider one would show 65 bricks wide. Worth another test to, well, test my theory perhaps?

@emc8366

I wish the 8-25 was a bit cheaper as it would be an excellent landscape lens. But with a 12-40 and a 40-150 in the bag already, it's hard to justify the saving versus a 7-14mm, though filters are a pain.
@JayChokdee
@JayChokdee 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I also have both lenses already so the 8-25 is tempting but not enough for me to bite it. I think this lens usage will be mostly for architecture, interior and video. In normal life stills my 12-40 will still be my main horse.
@emc8366
@emc8366 3 жыл бұрын
@@JayChokdee in all honestly I haven't found too many situations where 24mm equivalent isn't wide enough, but I do mostly shoot outdoors. I can see the attraction of something wider if shooting indoors or tighter areas. The Panasonic 10-25 1.7 is super tempting but is huge and again has the same problem as the new Oly 8-25 in that it is expensive and has a lot of overlap with my 12-40.

Interesting video clip Jimmy. I use M4/3rds and iPhone. Guess I may have to change to Samsung ?? I could speak with you for a long time in regard to M4/3rds which at the end of the day is the best option for photographers and videographer. Unless of course you have both unlimited financial resources and a Sherpa or two to carry all you equipment.and you wish to produce photos the size of the wall of a building. Oh and have a private jet to take your equipment hand luggage. When are you going to do this London photo walk !! Peace and take car of yourself and family

I PREFER 7-14MM TOTALLY CAUSE I THINK WIDER AND MORE BRIGHT MEAN EXTRA WIDE PHOTOS IN DARK. THIS IS LENSES FOR WIDE SHOTS NOT FOR MULTIPURPOSE. WHEN YOU BUING ONE YOU BUYING FOR WIDE. IN MY OPINION WINNER IS ONE 7-14MM. FOR GENERAL PURPOSE ARE OTHER LENSES. THESE FOR WIDE. SO TWO IMPORTANT THINGS 7-14 IS WIDER AND BRIGHTER MAKES THIS AMAZING LENS.
