Using 2 E-M1 II, I had already decided to skip the E-M1 III and wait for the new "wow" camera. Then it came out, I watched and read the reviews, saw the upgraded price and instead bought a used, but pristine E-M1 III from someone who had ordered the OM-1. The E-M1 III works fine for me along with the remaining E-M1 II, I have no problem with that (like I had earlier when using Pen-F and E-M1/II together). With the money that I saved, I bought a E-M5 III and still have some left over for a lens, once I find a space in my lens cupboard…

As a beginner who already has the EM1.2, and is considering the Pen-F, what was your trouble with that camera or that combination?
@hauke3644
@hauke3644 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sebror Both cameras are great! But the ergonomics are different. Starting from the old E-M5 I had gotten used to dial the exposure compensation on the right front dial. Having the histogram and over/under exposure warning in the viewfinder (see Peter's videos about that!) this works best for me. Unfortunately this is not possible with the Pen-F, which has a separate, but less convenient dial for that. Additionally, the whole button layout is different. Meanwhile the price of a pre-owned E-M1 II has dropped below that of the Pen-F. Although the E-M1 II isn't such a beautiful item as the Pen-F, it has many advantages for photography, so that is my clear recommendation.

I upgraded from the OM-D E-M1 Mark II to the Mark III for the charging, joystick, Live ND and processor. I plan to hold on to this body for long time. I watch KZbin videos that say you don't need to spend a lot for a decent camera and then they show you these great new features on the latest models. I felt that the Mark III has enough benefits that convinced me to upgrade. Great discussion about a topic that makes sense.

I have a secondhand EM1 MK2 which cost me £500 with less than 1,000 shutter activations last year, the EM5 mk3 I bought brand new with a 14-150mm mk2 kit lens for £850, after trading in my EM10 MK3 dual lens kit for £400. The initial reason I got into photography was to take pictures at flower shows, unobtrusively taking around 700 to 800 pictures in less than 30 minutes at each show, without upsetting the judges. Ambient room lighting is used. I don't go over 400 ISO so the camera's IBIS deals with the slow shutter speeds and exposure compensation gets the colours right. Some of the plants are very difficult to portray properly when on a show bench (only judges are allowed to move plants) as they are surrounded by other exhibits, and some of the plants spread themselves around, encroaching on other exhibits. So still photographs can't really do some of them justice, as they get lost in competing plants. I wanted to add videos, however after the judging which takes around 30 minutes the show is opened up to the general public. That means no large camera gear. I settled on a DJI Pocket 2 and can even use it to provide a virtual tour of the branching stems of the larger plants. Only a couple of members of the public spotted the fact I was doing something and stopped me to ask. It will be interesting to see what the floral society members think of the videos. What's the above got to do with the OM-1? Well it's my reasoning why I will not be buying one until they either reach the £500 upgrade outlay, and/or my EM1 MK2/ EM5 MK3 breaks down. However, at around 20-25,000 photographs per year that could be many years. Then again by the time my existing cameras are no longer up to the job it could be that the OM-1 MK2, 3, 4 or even the successor to the OM-1 series will be available given a 2 yearly upgrade cycle from OM Systems. There's always a newer something arriving, but you have to ask yourself, will it do the job noticeably better than what I've already got. Unless I get into bird in flight photography..😀

I had a Canon 7D for several years, and then I upgraded to a Canon 7D Mark II. That was four or five years ago. So my recent purchase of an OM1 Mark III is not so much an upgrade as it is a total change of camera systems. I bought it yesterday, and I don't yet have it. My reasons for switching, and it does appear that it will be a serious upgrade for me, is that the Olympus 4:3 camera system promises to be much lighter and less bulky. Due to physical problems, reducing the weight and size of my camera gear may allow me to get out there and make phots again. The true test of whether this purchase will be worth it is if it gets me out there again. I have been away from photography for about 3 years, maybe a little more. A lot of the features of the Olympus camera sound very intriguing to me. So, I will let you know how it works out for me. THANK YOU for the very helpful videos. I have by no means watched them all.

I loved my Canon F1n, but to think of all that my Olympus E-M1ii can do, it’s amazing. I am upgrading from an OMD Em5 mark 1 to a second hand hardly used OMD Em1 mark 2 and will perhaps upgrade to a second hand OM-1 much later as newer cameras are developed for my personal private hobby use. It will be a great joy for me to enjoy all the new features with my allmost new much more advanced camera.

I bought the OM-1 back in April and I’m really impressed! But I’m keeping the em1iii that I love also and it was the best and last “Olympus” Camera. The OM-5, released on October 2022, is smaller, but internally almost the same as the em1iii…. One more reason to keep the em1iii as a second Camera.

I would buy the OMD OM1 if I could afford it (it is an excellent camera). Instead, I use an Olympus E-M1 Mark II (which is also a fine camera) which I bought used in mint condition from ebay. For professionals and enthusiasts with a large budget, it makes sense to buy the latest & greatest gear. For someone like me who uses their camera mostly for vacation photography not so much.

I think an upgrade makes a lot of sense for wildlife photographers, especially for bird photography. The autofocus improvement in combination with artificial intelligence - tracking of eyes, etc., is very important. Tracking those animals with a rock solid autofocus is crucial. So, in my opinion this is one of the reasons to consider an upgrade, in addition of what you explained, Peter (video, speed, low light, better menu).

As an amateur, I tend to wait until good second hand models become available at a "fair" price before upgrading. Usually, I don't keep cameras for long and treat the small loss I incur between buying and reselling as a lease. The OM-1 is definitely in my sights, but in a couple of years. Until then I'm content with my low shutter count E-M1 mk II.

I may be the exception, but I don't like new gear. I'm not against new technology, or spending the money, it's just that I like to be instinctively familiar with menus, and know the camera controls by touch alone while looking through the viewfinder. A new camera can take weeks to get used to, and months to be completely familiar with. It's probably why shops do good business in older gear to even older professionals. They know the possibilities and limitations of a sensor, they know how to edit the output and don't need unnecessary distractions. Fortunately (for manufacturers and camera shops) we are all different.

I use a battery grip most of the time and find the camera really comfortable to handle. I am planning to upgrade to a newer model in the line up. Or have Tin Can serviced, retyred and set off on a trip around Australia Take a cruise on a ship. What would the OM-1 add? Internal filters would be nice, I don't use filters but I have some ideas which require exposures of tens of minutes, so maybe. 100 megapixels hand-held would be nice.

After the announcement of the OM-1, I made a pre-order right away. But the sea is still, they don't deliver. Since I have an EM1 mk III I decided to get a second system. So I bought the Sony A7 IV and can only say, wow. Image quality, colors, autofocus precision and speed, and the video capabilities are remarkable. But the system is heavy and expensive. Depending on what I do, I now use the systems which i guess is the better one and am very happy with that. I will no longer use my pre order for the OM-1. I am very dissatisfied with the information policy of OM-Systems regarding the delivery dates, yes I know everything is a bit more difficult at the moment, but you can still exspect an information in stead of simply not to deliver!

Thanks for the reasoning... very correct , Peter... 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻 For me personally... , now it would even be suitable to acquire another body of the Olympus E-M1X ... , its price has dropped to almost half of what it was worth in 2019 when it was launched on the market... and with its the latest Firmware updates have improved performance and speed even more... , plenty for me... and in terms of Video, its features and benefits are also plenty for me... 👌🏻👍🏻 The E-M1X is a camera that has me in love... 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻💖💖 , even in low light it has amazing performance and speed... , and its grip and ergonomics are second to none... 👌🏻👍🏻🙌🏻 The best way to improve my images now I think is to invest in a higher quality lens... , which is easier with the money I save compared to the new OM-1 ... Had a look at the older video (20 things…) and access to high res on EM1 II (& on the EM1 III) is faster via down button on arrow pad and 4 clicks to the right with the thumb wheel while pro capture low is only one click as my frame rate is set as low burst, so no need to go into menus; did they remove that feature on the OM1? Computational modes such as Live ND could be assigned to a button on the EM1 III. Can SSAF now be assigned to a button on the OM1?

Nice video clip. Not just a question of Upgrading which suggests you get rid of the older model camera. More a question of the right tools for the job. Although I have an OM-1 on a pre order I will not get rid of my EM1 mark iii cameras. The EM1 mark iii cameras will still be excellent for me shooting flowers and fungi particularly for focus bracketing / stacking and my occasional street or building photos. But the OM-1 will almost definitely be used for moving animals, birds in flight and insects and specifically dragonfly in flight. However, I will probably not buy two OM-1 cameras as I have great shots of birds in flight and dragonfly in flight with my EM1 mark iii cameras. Hoping my OM-1 will arrive and my 150-400mm pro lens will be sorted out by OM Systems before Autumn. Already missed three overseas wildlife trips with the OM-1 and pro 150-400mm lens. Peace 😊😊

So do you think OM would come out with a high 40+ megapixel OM-1X? I know many don't think the megapixels matter much, but I am a wildlife and macro photographer and being able to crop in is a big deal when I can't get close enough to the subject. That being said, I recently sold my Sony A73 and bought the 25mm and 17mm f1.2. My advice to my students is that glass is many times more important than the camera. So I took my own advice, and the lenses really are fantastic! So go with the glass unless you really need the OM-1 Capabilities. And OM, if you are listening: 40+ megapixel OM-1X (I'd be happy with 24 frames per second)

I have no idea if there is going to be a 40+ Mpix OM-1X. If I had to guess I do not think they will make a camera with that amount of pixels in a near future. If there is someday going to be a totally new sensor technology then it could be possible.

I'm not using these cameras to shoot videos. And as you mentioned, it is so practical to have 2 cameras that are so much alike in handling when it comes to switching between cameras at a gig. So at this moment I am not feeling a strong urge to upgrade. Maybe next year this urge may have become stronger. :)

I have these considerations now. I am new with Olympus and started with a used OM-D E-M1 (€299,-). I could have got a Mark II for the double, but decided to wait and see. Now I like it a lot and have already 4 lenses, including the 12-40 and 40-150 f/2.8 pro - I traded in two Nikon Z lenses. My main concern, I think, is ISO and dynamic range. I like to head out before sunrise in the morning, and I clearly see that my Nikon Z6 is better there. My plan was - if I like Olympus enough - to move away completely from Nikon Z and get a OM-D E-M1 Mark III. Of course now there is the OM-1 (which I did not really know about when I got the idea about Olympus). The price gap between the Mark III and OM-1 is quite big. I never shoot video, or the 0.1% video I shoot I do with my phone. So - if lowlight photography is the main criteria - should I go all the way to OM-1? (not now, but whenever economy allows me to).
@ForsgardPeter

OM-1 is better in low light than E-M1. To get the best out of low light you need to exposure to the right (kzbin.info/aero/PLDi4hF9-cy6gHucRXGhcdj6d45lsr4T0J). That will make the best possible image quality. Using DxO PureRAW or Topaz DeNoiseAi for noise reduction will also make a huge difference. To be honest full frame camera are better in low light. It is just pure physics.

Well, I'm not someone who jumps on the latest whistle and bells, but, for your bird shooting, the OM1 might actually make sense, as it's a great improvement in that field, especially if you can sell the EM1 for a decent Price.

Central New York here. I have the 2,3 and M1X. Birds birds birds. I shoot almost exclusively the 300mm F4. Buy it ….in my humble opinion. Front dial changed to ISO, rear shutter speed.. RARELY change F stop from 4. 600mm effective that focuses fron QWERTY feet to infinity.. if they don’t land on my head I can focus on them in a heartbeat

If we take an individual image the difference might not be that big, but over all performance is much better with OM-1.

@@ForsgardPeter I recall your video on the Mk II, Mk III, and the Em1 X. You were not motivated to move at that time based on the visual however, I knew that you are heavily into video work so your evolving logic only makes sense!! Thanks for the reply!

Very good video I like the fact that you treat the Olympus/ Om Brands with respect unlike the other guys video he recently posted about the Om-1 he was very negative about the Om-1 , I will not mention his name . Thank you for an informative video now only if I can talk my wife into an Om-1 lol.

Upgrade for € 2,200.00. As long as my EM 1 lasts, I'll use it. Since I use fixed focal lengths and therefore FF is not significantly heavier, I am forced to switch to the larger format in terms of price. For example, a Nikon z 5 is only €1,400 and with the 40mm f2 for €300, this combo is still a lot cheaper. Not all photographers only shoot flying birds. 😀

I upgraded from m1 mark ii to om-1 💪 no regrets 😁 or, I do miss an external charger though.! And, there's no Auto mode 😱😭😭😭😂🤣 I love the starry sky mode, which they choose to ignore for m1 mark ii and m1x.

Yes it's got some improvements but having now tested IQ it's very minimal at best and not enough to tell the difference .MFT is as good as it will get imo . the small sensor will always have limitations which you can't do anything about . OM imo will have to go FF to stay in business in the long term. There's already enough lenses so i don't really see how much further MFT can go.
@borderlands6606

Why is MFT a technological dead end, when other formats are not? I use a 24mp full frame camera when some are over 60mp. Panasonic have just brought out a 25.2 megapixel camera, so innovation continues.

Is it the end of the road for cell phone cameras with their sensors 1/10 the size of MFT? All over for them and no improvements coming?? How about FF, sure maybe another couple years and that format too is the end of the road, all over, put it back in the box??? Your logic is nonsensical. Peter's video describes specifically a slower improvement in cameras, not the end of improvements. If I can get my images appreciated by clients and published in quality publications, what more do you need?

I think small format (marketed as "full frame") sensor cameras have their limitations, end of the road, can they develop further, probably not. If you are telling a MFT company to go "FF" then why not just go digital medium format that make "full frame" just look "cropped" therein lies the future that the fool frames don't want to admit! (BTW very satisfied MFT shooter so I am not buying a Fujifilm GFX camera any time soon.)

@caw25sha 2 жыл бұрын
It isn't necessary any longer to continually improve image quality. MFT quality is high enough for most needs. If you need more then go with full frame. If you need even more buy a Fujifilm G series, Hasselblad or whatever. Throughout the entire history of photography there has been a large selection of formats for different requirements in terms of both cost and quality. The APS sensor in Fujifilm X cameras is also a lot smaller than FF (although bigger than MFT) and nobody is predicting or baying for their demise. In fact Fujifilm is hugely successful and arguably OM System's main competitor.

35mm film cameras gained popularity with journalists not because of the image quality, but because the cameras were small and light weight and produced images that were good enough for newsprint. These same virtues were important to amateur photographers. M43 cameras produce images far superior to those of 35mm film cameras and have features far beyond what film cameras can do. As long as they stay small and light and keep up with advances in the technology, as well as having a price advantage over the larger formats, I think they will have a place in the market.

Everyone as to decide themselves. OM-1 is a much better camera that E-M1 MKIII and MKII, but does it matter, is up to everyone themselves.

I got an E-M1 III & the battery grip. I won’t upgrade to the OM1 anytime soon. Here’s why: The image quality of the E-M1 III is 90% of what the OM1 offers. Maybe even more in most real world scenarios. It’s not considerably better, no matter how hard the fanboys try to sell it on social media. I’ve seen RAW files people have shared side by side, I looked at the files side by side. There is no “wow” here that justifies that kind of investment. While I think the new viewfinder is probably amazing, I have no particular issue with the E-M1 III viewfinder. Battery life seems to be greatly improved in the OM1, but it comes at a price: the new batteries are 50% more expensive, they’re incompatible with the previous models, you need a new battery grip which is also more expensive and not backwards compatible. In other words, even as a second body to an existing E-M1 III, buying an OM1 makes little sense as now you need to carry two sets of batteries, chargers, battery grips. I have no issues getting great pictures from the E-M1 III with pro-capture and the existing auto-focus capabilities. I don’t see a need to upgrade to the OM1 for that. The OM1 is expensive, considering the required investment into batteries and battery grip, that becomes even more expensive. You can get a refurbished E-M1 III for about half that price and you get 80% of the OM1, and buying another E-M1 III can share into your investments in batteries. The E-M1X is available in large quantities used for around $1.400 or less sometimes. When you consider the E-M1X comes with a grip, it’s more than $1,000 less expensive than the OM1 with a grip. The OM1 needs to come down by a couple of hundred of dollars before it becomes an interesting value proposition for me. At that point, I would probably replace rather than augment my existing E-M cameras with the OM1, so I only need one type of battery. It’ll be years before that happens.
