I agree Peter, a new sensor is needed
@Serenoj694 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Nice to have, sure. Necessary: not. In 3,5 yrs any failed shot with my Em1.2 was my error and never the cam. The IQ is great and in single shot mode holds up very well against the D800E which I can and have compared it to. One situation: low light action. APS-c is barely better, look at the objective tests and has not gained anything in 5 whole years. But FF will get you sharp shots where subjects will be blurred on the Em1.2 I use the 56 mm Simga f1.4 for this, but of course it is limited vs a 70-200 F2.8 Nikon lens. Less versatile. For many shots I take the Hires tripod mode is good, the 50 MP handheld might be better. But I have never seen a direct comparison. From what I saw the IQ gain seems to be less than with the 80 Mp version. But it is there What to me is a far more glaring omission are both screens. EVF needs to be 3,7 MP or 5,7 but I understand this is a problem for the refresh rate. I do think 3,7 MP with 120 Hz should have been possible and used. Another problem to me is the batterylife. On one hand it gets me a long way but not as long even as my GH4 but surely I am comparing to the Sony A7-3 which gets us 50% more batterylife. And that is about it.
@erichnk4 жыл бұрын
WHY? Every objective-looking test and user-report that I've seen confirms that it';s a non issue in 95-98% of shooting and even Olympus itself advises that, if you really need more for very dark or very, very large prints, you're better off to go to "FF". As their Canadian sales director, who is quite technically, savvy explained at the EM1x release, designing, specifying, testing and integrating a new sensor is a long and complicated process for a shared Olympus team that involves 15-20 top level engineers and techno;ogists. With overall camera sales steadily declining, it hardly seems a wise allocation of resources.

High Res handheld, the ND filter and the star AF are characteristics that I want. We'll see. 👍🏻
@TheCreativeFusion4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your review. Yes, a very good camera indeed especially at the price point. I would certainly welcome your forthcoming video investigating image quality (and here a comparative video up against a decent FF could be a great benchmark). Whilst there's plenty to like here and many new and improved features, I did find myself wondering "is this essentially the same hardware as the Mk II and/or E-M1X just with unlocked and reconfigured firmware? Or is there really some new and improved hardware in this package too? Apart from the impressive new processor I mean. My quandary is really whether to upgrade to this new model now or to save my money and wait another 2 - 4 years for the next round of E-M1 X Mk II or EM1 Mk IV hardware improvements such as a sensor upgrade and better video specs. It's really improvements in image quality that I am chasing... especially if looking to enlarge images to A1 or larger sizing (think gallery and large installation wall prints). Probably MFT isn't quite there yet to enable this (except for product and portrait genre where the subject is very close). Some may feel the image quality of OMD is good enough already... and I would totally agree that it is superb at A4 and A3 print size... even A2 (or website applications) especially with close up subjects where there is no crop factor required. Yet, I still feel there's room for improvement in image fidelity at the granular level.. Probably I am a MFT utopian - it seems inevitable that one day MFT sensor and image processing tech will reach a level of excellence... 6k... 8k and beyond... the question is when AND more importantly, when will it be passed on to consumers. Rumours of Sharp's 8k 33mp MFT sensor seem to suggest it's on its way.

Hi Peter, thank you for the review. As I said on Robin's video I think the sensor is still a good one in 2020 as sensor technology is already pretty mature and approaching theoretical limits (maybe in the future we will get a slightly higher resolution sensor, with a bit more DR). Also would love to see Olympus incorporate some form of rudimentary star tracking using the IBIS to accompany the starry AF feature. Biggest obstacle here in Australia is the introductory price, which is a bit high (and the 12-45 f4 lens is a lot more expensive than the 12-40 f2.8 lens!).
@ForsgardPeter4 жыл бұрын
That is true about the sensor. But still it would be a good thing. What I have read from comments it is also a psychological thing. People feel that it would more of a new camera if it had a new sensor. Star tracking would be great. I think Pentax has that in some of there cameras. So it can be done. 12-45 f4 more expensive than 12-40 f2.8? Why?
@terrylovejoy31474 жыл бұрын
@@ForsgardPeter just checking local pricing in Australia at one of the popular online stores 12-40 2.8 is AU$700, the 12-45 4.0 is AU $1000 and the 12-100 4.0 is AU$1500. Multiply by 0.62 to get Euros. The 12-40 2.8 is a bargain in our market, so we were hoping the 12-45 was lower cost again.

Now I want to set the following setup - amongst other relevant things - at quick/Super control menue: C1 Landscape: (based on APERTURE priority) can`t press "Stabilizer off (= GREY, can`t set) C2 Action: (based on SHUTTER priority) can`t press C-AF (= GREY, can`t set), on S (shutter) = fastest is only possible until 1/250 (instead of 2000) The only explanation I have: 1 Typically the stabilizer and C-AF would be turned off if I have my shutter set to Hi-Res mode. 2 C-AF could also be inactive if I don't have a lens attached or 3 the lens has a focus clutch set to manual focus or 4 I am using an adapted lens. But: 1: The shutter isn`t set to HiRes mode. 2: Lens is attached. 3: The focus isn`t set to manual - I controlled it on the lensring. 4: 12-100mm isn´t adapted. So normally the best explanation would be 2+3. But the 12-100m Pro lens is attached and not set with function ring to manual. Can you say, what else to do to solve this?

Hello Peter, thank you for your videos, since you are an Olympus visionary, I think you are the right person to make this question, I just want to know how to shoot in HIGH RESOLUTION or HDR without touching the camera, I have not succeeded in the APP. Besides, the shots with a delay of 2 and 12 seconds seem that they are not compatible with these methods, I am talking about an OM-D1-Mark II. Do you have any piece of advice on this issue?
@ForsgardPeter3 жыл бұрын
In High res mode you can set the delay from the Shooting menu 2. HDR uses high sequencial mode and the delay cannot be used. The best way is to use cable release or OI.Share app.

@@ForsgardPeter Hi Peter, one of the video previews was from Wex (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6nEnoZtjqdkrrs), but several others made mention. Also, Olympus appear to be suggesting they've improved the weather sealing over earlier E-M1s and E-M5s. I had thought that was why you put yours through the wash 😄. Did they give any further info? ; as Olympus are frustratingly contradicting themselves on how good they believe their weather sealing actually is. Some, obviously Olympus sanctioned advertisements say "can withstand all weather" which is not the same as "splash proof". Thanks, Rick

Great coverage of the new features Peter. Well done. You presented the first, that I've seen, mention that the new processor may produce slightly cleaner images. I hope you are correct. I'm not sure I understand all the disappointment of not having a new sensor with more MP. The current 20 is nearly equivalent to 80 on a FF, and with more pixels noise control would be even more difficult. Personally I think an update should still be near 20MP, but employ BSI or other technology rather than cramming more MP on m4/3. Thanks again for the video review.

Pete I enjoy using my M1/M2 but after three years the battery died. One day it was working next day flat line. It’s a good thing I had the grip with the extra Oly battery. For the bad> Uncle Oly won’t cover the battery under warranty. I don’t beat on my Oly gear and have about 30k on the shutter. As you know the batteries cost almost as much as a Volvo S80 car battery.... Will I buy the new M1-M3 I don’t know. If Uncle Oly offered me a half price unit that would take the sting out of cost. Conclusion> I still own and use the E-1 E-3 and E-5 system. Not one battery has died except a third party one. MFG in Japan

I can only applaud the new MK3 iteration of the E-M1. The upgrades are incremental and not so extreme as the difference between MK1 and MK2 iteration of this camera body. Some nice improvements is the Af position button as we had on Canon 5D series and Em1X, the inclusion of a My Menu function (with should be made available to other Olympus bodies with a FW upgrade), same battery and battery grip as of the previous model (easier to have the previous body as backup). A faster CPU with perhaps a lower noise amplification of the signal resulting in better higher iso images (to be verified). Regarding the sensor everybody is complaining regarding the sensor. Is a BSI design better? As we have seen from previous reviews of the Fujifilm XT-2 vs XT-3 the differences are in some cases worser than the conventional CMOS sensor. For the people aclaiming the medium format sensors it is still the "old" same Sony sensor as released years ago Hasselblad, Fujifilm and Pentax are still using the same "prehistoric 50MP sensor" in reviewers terms :-) and few people complains. I am of the opinion that CMOS sensor tech has somehow came to a halt and that improvements are mostly based on improved micro lenses on the senor as computational algorithms than pure sensor tech. The RGB W technology looked promissing a couple of years ago but nobody speaka about it... Camera companies are again in the MP race Will I upgrade my current MK2, not now. If you are a pro using the MK2 since release and you have a high shutter count perhaps yes as you have again a future proof investment into the same system with the same lenses, batteries and battery grip. You can keep one of your existing bodies as a backup as they use the same battery/grip charger , with is a game changer compared to the first M1. These are of course my own toughts / opinions. With Regards,
