Hi, I'm Spanish, maybe my English is not very good. I have seen almost all of your videos and I have to thank you for taking the time to do this kind of tutorial and explain everything so well. Normally for people who have olympus omd 10 mark 2 there are hardly any tutorials. I just wanted to write to thank you and continue giving you encouragement to continue creating videos, thanks to you I have learned a lot and every day I have more desire to take pictures. I hope your channel continues to grow because you deserve it. Your content is of great quality. A greeting from Spain

New photographer here! While taking the trash out a bit ago I was admiring the moon and bemoaning the fact that I hadn’t been able to capture it adequately with my Olympus E-PL8, but after a quick google search let me to your excellent video, here I am 20 minutes later with some very decent photos of our friend Luna. Thanks a million sir!

Rob, I am so glad I found your KZbin tutorials. I was given a E-M10 ii as a gift a couple of years ago, but had only used it on full auto and didn't use it very much at that. Since finding your entries I have started really learning the camera and am really, really liking it. Your calm, clear presentation style and being able to see the view screen as you go through the settings is brilliant. Thanks again for all you are doing. I haven't watched them all yet but am working on it diligently.

nice tutorial Rob. I usually prefer P mode to shoot the moon handheld, leave the aperture to the max of the 14-150mm ii lens f5.6. Doing tests with A mode from f5.6 to f8 didn't notice any change in sharpness (E-M10 v1). I leave a 2s delay too, so I can hold the camera with two hands and not add any shaking while pressing the shutter button. Also tried adding the TCON-17x using a 55-58mm step-up ring and that worked out pretty well
@RobTrek

@@RobTrek I had a Lumi FZ82 which can take pics of the moon clearly as the zoom is 1200mm, however it was not fulfilling me to take my 'own' photos. Love it. Great, simple, perfect tutorail (as usual). I really mean that. Only issue is doing manual focus or auto-focus? Some people suggest manual focus but than focus is really tricky as the moon is too bright. It is important to dim the screen light and maybe use a red filter to adjust the eyes to the darkness....
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 4 жыл бұрын
I use autofocus because it works fine. Dimming the screen helps keep your eyes in night vision mode. I don't see a need for a red filter.

yeah! Still, we can't forget that its a 600mm equivalent, so...its quality is still pretty impressive for that focal length 😁 I have te 40-150 f2.8 pro, but sometimes it feels "short", and i dont have the teleconverter. So, this 75-300 sounded like a really nice deal 👌

Very interesting about backing off max zoom for peak sharpness. I have those lenses so will have to test. I’m guessing not the case for pro lens I shoot bulk of my 12-40 shots at 40.

Just a best practice for me. Based on the charts I've seen on various lenses including dxomark.com. I know it's definitely true on my 150-600mm tamron. It gets really soft at 600mm.

Hi Rob! I've been watching your tutorials and getting better as I go. With that being said, instead of resetting the camera, could I set up these options and set this to myset 2? Hi Rob. A wonderful video, yet again. So concisely and well explained. I have recently watched many of your great videos and I must say you've re-ignited my enthusiasm in getting out there and take photos. Can't wait for a clear night sky now to have a go at some moon photos! Is it better to use exposure compensation rather than shutter speed to get the correct exposure?

Thanks. It really depends what mode you're in. Exposure comp makes more sense "P" mode. Still need to be careful. Just take a few test shots and see.

Awesome video! I’ve been thinking of starting to take a few shots of the moon over the last few nights. Have you ever considered making a video about photographing the stars? I’ve been making quite a few attempts at it lately, and have been getting some decent results. Not sure what area you’re in, but if there’s any possibility of seeing what you’d be able to capture of the Milky Way or even just the night sky in a hopefully not so light polluted area, that would be awesome! Thank you so much for making your videos. You’ve helped me get familiar with my camera way better and faster than I would have on my own

Good advice, as ever! Hmm, hmm - I'm really considering to buy this 75-300 mm lens. Very affordable, very compact, and it would be usable for landscape too. Maybe even better buying this one first, before I go for the 12-40 Pro (I already have primes in this range, while 300mm would be something I not even have as an old SLR lens to attach to my Pen F Digital). This is where MFT shines (there's a reason that I no longer invest in the Sony A7 system, where I never found a native lens with the right price point).

Great video !!! By far you have the best step by step instructional videos that I have seen. I learn something new about my OM-D M10 MarkII every time I view your videos. I did ask a question yesterday eve regarding EP 49 "All settings explained". Hopefully I did it properly as I clicked on Ep 49 and posed my question. Being retired and new to this whole computer thing, I hope I posed my question in the proper fashion. If I need to post my question in a different manner, just let me know. Also, I can repost my question if need be if for some reason it did not get posted properly. I noticed in your last video, that you have a nice looking accessory grip on you OM-D M10 MarkII. As I have big hands a nice ergonomic sized grip would be nice. Which one do you use ? Keep up the great videos, as I think yours are way better than the ones found on the Olympus Page.

Hi. I answered your previous question just now. The exact grip I have is no longer available, but here is a similar one: amzn.to/2yuWS7c with the arca swiss mount, or this one which has not arca swiss but has a nicer look: amzn.to/2yw6pel

Hi: thanks for responding. I've got the Fotodiox one but the depth dimension still seems to be a bit small fro my big hands. Although, its a big improvement over no grip at all. The depth dimension on this grip does appear to be greater: See robs first link. The depth dimension is: 2.9" according to Oben's web site. Thanks again

I just use manual mode and adjust shutter speed until the histogram looks good. Seems to be a lot less guessing that way. I suspect you needed less compensation on long lens because the spot metering picked up less of the surrounding dark area.

I have one of the original zhiyun crane gimbals. It's great! A bit heavy to walk around for any length of time - say 30mins or more in my case. Haven't tried the non motorized gimbals, but they seem to work well. I like the ones that use the weights as feet so it doubles as a mini tripod/monopod.

Another great video! We tried to capture the stars tonight’s as the sky was clear and they were very bright. We used both the 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R and the 14-42mm f3.5 - 5.6 IIR kit lens and we couldn’t get one picture to take w the OM-D 10 Mark ii. Any suggestions for settings?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on where you are in terms of light pollution. Settings are greatly affected by this when shooting stars. For the 14-42, try setting 14mm, f/3.5, iso 3200, 20 seconds. Then add or subtract iso until your histogram is more to the right. Then you need to go into post processing and pull back the blacks. Astrophotography is not hard, but requires a lot of calculations and post processing. I'm practicing myself and will do a tutorial once I easily can repeat my results in various conditions with minimal settings like in this moon shot tutorial.

Rob, just one question. Why do factory reset?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 5 жыл бұрын
Two reasons. 1) To create a baseline for viewers in terms of settings so that we are on the same page and can exactly duplicate results. 2) Sometimes settings buried deep in the menu disable other settings I might need and it's too hard to remember which settings affect other settings or where the settings are. So if I reset, I can systematically change settings and develop muscle memory for the things I do most.

Capturing the moon is like photographing a light bulb.💡 Totally off topic, but I can’t seem to change the aperture and shutter speed when the movie mode is selected on the dial. Edit: Looks like I can associate the movie mode with P, A, S or M.

@seamuswarren 6 жыл бұрын
Rob Trek, Yes, “P” was enabled in Movie mode. Selecting the big “M” enabled access to the aperture and shutter controls prior to recording. I turned off “Liveview Boost” for a wysiwyg experience. 🤪 Presumably a lens with an aperture ring facilitates aperture adjustment after recording has commenced and a variable ND filter is needed in bright ambient light scenarios when we want to retain a shallow and bright aperture. I think the E-M1 has a teleconverter feature enabling a closer view of the celestial body (I think) at the expense of resolution. 🤪 I can’t even remember if I had a 75-300 at the time I attempted this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6LEm2B9mdycoNk ...as my memory is porous. So many settings on these cameras. Sometimes easier to go as manual as possible. 🤪
