OM-2N is very good, I love my OM-1 but the OM-2N uses normal batteries and it has aperture priority that's very accurate. It still has an override though for a regular needle meter like the OM-1.

If you buy a OM1, OM1n or OM1-md: you have to remove the top plate and clean out all of the old foam around the prism and hotshoe bracket. It's an easy endeavor but is a necessity. Otherwise great cameras, once you start with the OM system you'll soon collect them all.

The foam used as cushioning on top of the prism degrades and east away the coating on the glass reflex prism. The foam turns into a gooey mess, it can also migrate down into the mechanism and cause mechanical issues. It is not a hard fix even for someone who has no experience working with cameras, you do have to be careful tho. We if you have an Om1 om1n or om1-md that has been to a shop in the past 20 years it probably has been done already.

I got one including lenses at a estate sale for $10. With the express acknowledgement that I take care of it and use it love it and don't keep it in storage. Mine is the om-1. And I have used it and the looks I've received are priceless in the day of digital and smartphones. And have received many compliments from said people while surrounded by them all wanting to hold it and look thru the lens. Many older people have nodded smiled and said this was one of their family cameras to shoot important events. What a wonderful camera. I'll keep it alive as long as I can per my instructions.

Excellent review, thumbs up. If I might add, you forgot to stress its strongest point, and that is the fact that it's one of the few cameras where you can compose, select aperture, shutter speed, and focusing without ever taking your eyes off the visor. p.s. The OM was originally called M for Maitani, and after Leica complained they decided to add the O for Olympus, hence OM (Olympus-Maitani) :) p.p.s. Re: battery. The camera voltage can be very easily changed from 1,35v to 1,5v, which will allow you to use nowadays batteries.
@OldCameras
@OldCameras 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matteo. Yes they claimed that, but the timing was all so convenient :) And yes that's a strong point. A few of the Olympus cameras were like that too, like the RC.

I really enjoyed this. It was my first decent camera 1972. Previously, I had used a Petri with their 45mm f1.9 lens from 1955-1972. I think I had an Olympus for about 20 years, before I traded in all my gear for a Nikon N90s (and then Nikon digitals). When I upgraded to the OM-2n, I gave my OM-1 to my son. It was his first 35. But, guess what? I am selling all my extensive Nikon gear to go back to Olympus and get the E-M1 Mark III with a 100-400 and a 12-40, plus a couple of accessories.

A list of cameras sharing the exact same prism if you fancy repairs. OM1, 1N, 2, 2N, 10 , G , 20. I'm not totally sure if this list is accurate but it seems legit. I successfully swapped an om10 prism into an om1 body so I know those 2 at least are compatible. You can get om10s really cheap sold as spares repair.

I used an OM-1 in high school 1974/5 and bought an OM-2 in 1978 which I still use today (5 images yesterday 19th 03 2020). It is still slick in all of its functions though I must change the light seals soon. I don't know how many rolls I have put through this body over the years but it will run into the thousands. OMD EM5s are remarkably like the OM1 and 2 in looks, right down to the more pointed pentaprism. My EM10II s are more like the OM10 as you might expect. I had an OM10 when I was 15. Cheap as chips and the shutter sound was smooth as silk, just like the 1 and 2, making so many SLRs sound noisy and clunky. If I could afford it I would stretch to an EM5 I hope they don't take away the Olympus trade mark, would be a huge mistake.

6:13 It's charming the way you actually showed the viewfinder. Olympus OM1 and OM2 viewfinder images were huge (97% versus about 85% on many SLR) and zi actually felt that I was looking over the top of the camera not through it. The high eyepiece mand small camera meant that the viewfinder image emerged in with what you could see over the top of the camera and your left eye would see right past the camera as well owing to the compact size. It was a triumph of design. The smallest pentaprism ever and the largest image! Then that lovely quiet shutter and mirror.

The Olympus OM-1 is a masterpiece. All the controls you need are right where you need them and there on the lens. Once you’ve set the ISO for the film you’re using, you can shoot unfettered with your eye in the viewfinder, monitoring composition, focus and exposure, your right hand taking and winding the film on, and the left hand focussing, moving aperture and shutter speed. For a newcomer to photography, it’s superb. It’s shows you the ropes so you can understand speed, shutter and aperture interaction immediately. My late Father had one which I have taken on myself and it’s the only manual camera that I’ll use. I don’t want to use anything else! Great review.

Of you are living in Europe and look for one, there is an old guy in Hamburg, Germany, who learned his profession as camera mechanic in the 60s at Olympus' maintenance facility in Hamburg and who opened his own shop after years of maintaining these old mechanical cameras. He does every film camera from Olympus and has all the original tools and spare parts. You find him here: om-doktor.de/ I bought a black OM-1 MD from him, freshly maintained, he even had replaced a Schottky diode in the exposure meter to ensure that the meter can work with modern 1.55V batteries and recalibrated the meter to this voltage. I paid 132EUR for my really beautiful OM1. Much cheaper than buying a camera at ebay for 60EUR, that looks nice but does not work properly. Some time later I also purchased the electronic chrome OM-2 for 140EUR. I actually was already deep into the Nikon system with a few nice lenses and a near mint F2AS and also pretty nice F3, but the OMs were just .... well .... nicer. They look prettier, they are considerably lighter, they fit in smaller bags and even the Zuiko lenses are smaller and lighter (49mm filter instead of 52mm) and are of equal optical quality. I will keep my Nikons and I regularly use them, but my go to travel cameras are my OMs. I carry both when I travel so that I have one to shoot Provia slide and one for Fuji Acros BW film. I do not take both out on the same time though, I just decide if I want to do color or BW and grab the right camera usually with only the 50mm attached and a 28mm in the pockets of my pants. Love them both!

I noticed that your camera had "locked up".. You really should learn to fix the issue yourself, it takes 10 minutes at the most, will save you money and most importantly, you can do it "in the field" if need be. I have 2 OM 1's, bought them and 4 Zuiko lenses dirt-cheap at a flea-market, the "defective" one was practically free..

No, i think the Pentax MX was better, smaller with a much better meter. My fave OM was the OM2N so please don't think I'm anti Olympus in any way. I hate to see how the brand is brand is dying. My fav current Olympus is the digital Pen F but the Fuji X Pro 2 blows its doors off for images... sorry.

I have NEVER had an OM-1 jam. OM-2? Yes, if the battery is spent, but there is an easy way to clear the lock up, as documented in the user guide.

Every one should own and use at least one non-auto analogue film camera,why? because you have to use your brain. It is both frustrating and fun.My go to is an Ihagee Exakta VX1000, it is large heavy, awkward to use, a very odd shape and it operates with the left hand!!

Very disappointsd in the build quality of the OM1, hardly had it when the light meter went on it and was quoited mad money to get it fixed!!, So left it and went back to my OM10 still working perfect decades later.

A constructive video. I have a Olympus OM-1 film camera. It is a blast to use. I take along my digital Olympus OM-D EM5 camera as meter friend. You can find the manual for the Olympus OM-1 camera online in PDF format with a search engine. Good work with video!

+Michael Uhrich Thanks for watching. Yes many people I know do something similar. They have a digital camera as a meter. Other people use light meter apps on their smartphones - not completely accurate, but will do.

Hi! If you're in London, then I recommend Eye Culture on Bethnal Green Road mainly based on their low prices. I'm not sure of where to go outside London, except for Snappy Snaps.

Great OM1 video. I have had an OM2n since I bought it new in 1980. It is also a wonderful camera. I like it so much I bought a second one a little over a year ago with a motor drive and a couple of lenses I did not have. I like the easy grip you get with the motor drive. But for portability you cannot beat the standard OM in a simple leather case. Thanks.
@OldCameras

+Robert Nuttmann Absolutely. I don't like motor drive (or battery grips on digital) so much. I feel it messes up the cool rectangular form factor of a camera and turns it into some kind of square :)

Thank you so much for making this video. I just bought this camera yesterday in an amazing shop here in Chicago. I am not a proffesional photographer and was very confused by having the speed in the ring and not as a nob on top of the camera as my Canon one. Thanks again, really useful video.

I'm a bit late with my comment my but here goes... I owned an OM1md but regrettably sold it many years ago. However I now own an ON2n and an OM4ti as well as a selection of Zuiko lenses and absolutely love them, they are so portable and I can trust the metering with them. I actually prefer them over my Nikon FM3a.... Love you're channel, Regards, Alan
@OldCameras

Hi Alan, Never late :) Those zuiko lenses are amongst the best there are. Apart from the Helios-44-2, the other lens I use very frequently is my Zuiko 50mm f1.8. Very sharp and pleasing bokeh.

For me my 50mm 1.4 stays on the camera most of the time, i carry ( If i need them) 24mm 2.8, 21mm 3.5 and a 135mm 2.8 all but the 135mm have the same filter size. All beautifully crafted lenses, i feel blessed and privileged to own them....Long live film photography (Although like most people i use digital as well) :-)

I plan on getting B&W film for it, but I have been recommended so many different ISO's. Can I ask which you would recommend for street photography/landscape shots? I was thinking ISO100 but someone told me 400. I live in London (England), and the weather is rather overcast and rainy at times, but we do get the odd bright cold day. Thanks in advance, I keep watching this review! :)
@OldCameras
@OldCameras 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, it's a nice choice indeed. I think 100 is not ideal for London most of the time, especially in winter. 400 is a nice compromise. Also for street photography, you probably want a relatively fast shutter speed, so the higher the ISO the better (so you can still use a reasonable aperture to ensure you're in focus). I'd go for 400 too.
