Ok.. so I left a comment on your E-M5 video, and now I'm here watching this one. I've got the E-M1X in my cart and if I can close this next job, I will be adding it to my gear. At under $700, it's simply something that I can see passing up. Given that I'm looking to film a lot more "in the wild," the ruggedness of the platform has me sold. I can't wait to add it to my toolbelt. Cheers Rick

I saw one in real life by chance two weeks ago - the first EM1x I've ever seen in real life and it was being shot by a relatively small woman no less! If she didn't care about the size, why should I? Getting one myself was all I could think of for days. I couldn't sleep. I watched your video... And pulled out the credit card. My first Olympus ever arrived three days ago and it is AWESOME! Can't believe I had such a hangup about large cameras before. Great job explaining this misunderstood and lovable giant, Jimmy. Unbelievable that we can get gear this good at these prices (got mine certified as new for $700USD with 260 shutter actuations). -A G9/G95 owner

The true workhorse of the m4/3 system. Incredibly good ergonomics, great sensor that is only overshadowed by the OM1, and so rugged. Mine has been around the world several times and like the Timex watches of the past, it just keeps on ticking.

Ahh… finally some well deserved praise. I love my EM1X. One of the best Bodies ever made - together with I say the E1, the Leica M and original SL. The economics are so superior to anything Olympus / OMDS has ever done. Yes, it might be bigger and heavier, but the surprising point is: far more stress and strain free. Not twisting of your wrist, perfect balance and weight distribution and direction of weights in your hand bones and so on. The bend on the Battery Grip is just Genius !! You can shoot for hours without any issues. It is build like a tank, the button placement, especially for back button AF is the best on the market. Shooting in Winter with cloves not issue, you can reach easily every Butten (which you cannot on an OM1)… The body design and its basic engineering was well ahead of its time. I say unmatched. If you would take the OM1 MKII internally , add a second TruePix X and increase the buffer even more, add 4K120 and you have a killer! Oh, at the EVF Optics are superior to the one of the OM1 MKII… just try. I absolutely love mine. If OMDS would ever release an OM1X i would order in milliseconds..

I was at my local camera store a few months ago. I had just started using Olympus for event and theater work. The store doesn't carry much used M4/3 gear, but I found out that they had a PL35-100mm f/2.8 ii. It was in great shape, but I asked if they had a body I could try it out on. Out comes an E-M1X! I had never held one before. I instantly loved the feel of it. Plus, it is very comfortable shooting in portait mode (very common in event and theater), and battery life is great with two batteries on board. I bought both and use them all the time. I just wish it had face recognition as good as my E-M1.iii.

When you're hand holding the 40-150 Pro or 300 Pro (my biggest lenses), the additional weight of the E-M1X isn't very noticeable - but the incredible grip and natural control layout is always, ALWAYS noticeable. I'll never sell mine, its an incredible motorsport camera. Hopefully, OM Systems owns the tooling and can stuff the guts of the OM1 MkII in it at some point! (As an Industrial Designer I know that's not how it works, but I can dream...)

I recently discovered mirror lenses and have been modifying optically through lens edge blackening of the lens elements and internal flocking which dramatically reduces internal tube glow. I regularly shoot with 500-600mm mirror lens for Bird photography and have had excellent hand held shots due to the IBIS.

I bought the em1x right after its release in 2019, best m43 camera ever. In 2022 I switched to N FF, sold all of my m43 gear… Worst decision ever. This year at the om system sale, I bought the em1x again for 1/3 the price of the 2019. I missed it so much.... Ok, Om-1 has better evf, stacked - faster sensor.... but you can live with what the em1x has. btw. selling the FF and going back to the m43.

The E-M1X is one of my favorite bodies of all time. I think though that if they update it, they should really think about packing it with more computational power and capabilities. You can really find a way to fly if you have a smaller sensor and a lot of power. Maybe something like the Nikon Z8/9 with a M4/3 sensor. I use my E-M1X very often, and I know I can count on it for anything. It's about as big as my other full frame Nikon bodies with double grips and the ergonomics are really good, even in my smaller hands. I think Olympus never really maximized the capability of the E-M1X. I wouldn't mind seeing a new E-M1X, and I would definitely consider buying it. For me the best camera is the one you don't notice when you are using it, and my E-M1X is just that. It gets out of the way so I can make pictures

I bought my E-M1X new from B & H near the very end, after the retail prices came down. I did a LOT of research prior to buying, just as I have for my mostly pro lens lineup, and haven't any regrets at all. The ergonomics are simply superb and all of the dual controls are in perfect positions. Is it heavy? Sure, especially when teamed with the larger glass. Even at my age, I'm still packing it and my glass about in the harsh climate of western North Dakota, eastern Montana and Wyoming without fear of the highly abrasive dust that is ever-present here or the severe temperatures or precipitation. I shoot mostly landscapes and wildlife but also transportation (railroads) and aurora/astro images. The autofocus and tracking has worked exceptionally well for birds (including insects, such as dragonflies) and trains. The live ND filter works very well (perhaps not as many stops as the OM but that's not an issue for my purposes) and both hi-res and focus stacking come into play frequently. I've been using Olympus ever since borrowing one of my dad's E-1's many, many moons ago and then my old E-510 (still have it and operational even though it has had over 50k shutter cycles), so it was a logical investment that I've never regretted. Was I tempted by FF? Sure... But with today's software, noise in low light it far more easy to resolve and there are simply too many pros that outweigh the few cons in this body. My only wish is to perhaps see an upgraded version from OM, just as many others have mentioned. I cannot imagine parting with this body even when tempted by an OM-1 mark II (as a secondary body, really), for my X is a tool that simply fits.

I won't be able to say anything, that my fellow E-M1Xers haven't already mentioned here in greater detail, that I'll ever be able to express, but in a few words - I've used two E-M1X bodies, for over a year now on a daily basis in my photojournalism work, with a 12-40 and a 40-150 2.8s, and I've never ever looked back! Love this camera and everything that it does! Clients are happy, I am happy, it's comfortable as hell to use, albeit a bit bulky and heavy, this is a beast of a camera! My only gripe with OM is that they need to trickle down some features from the E-M1III and the OM-1 to my lovely cameras! A simple software update might introduce 4k120 or a faster AF - I am pretty sure that the internals will be more than capable of accommodating any of these. Cheers from Sofia, Jimmy! Here is to connecting soon again, hopefully!

Thanks, Jimmy. You keep mentioning the new high-end models for 2023/24, and I couldn't help but think about the G9 Mk II, GH7, or OM-1 Mk II. I bought my OM-1 in August and used it during my trip to Vienna and Prague this summer. I must say, I am absolutely happy with this beast of a camera. I'm curious if there might be an opportunity to see a side-by-side comparison between the OM-1 (Mark II) and the OM-D E-M1X in terms of autofocus (both AF-S and AF-C), image quality at higher ISOs, IBIS performance, and night shooting capabilities. Occasionally, I come across an OM-D E-M1X being sold online, and it always makes me pause and wonder whether I should buy this "mythological" camera. It’s quite tempting, you know.

This camera just has so many capibilites that few or none have. Composite veiw, live ND, 400,000 shutter life and all of the focus modes are amazing. The size is not an issue as I always use a battery grip anyway on my SLR sytle cameras. Thanks for this review it just confirms my impression of this body. I just wish OM Systems would support it and come out with newer software or maybe an E-M2X...

Thanks Jimmy, great video! I totally agree with you. I've owned an EM 1-X for 3 years or so now, I bought it directly from Olympus in their sale bundled with the M Zuiko 25mm Pro lens. I personally think the EM 1-X is the best MFT camera around, I can't fault it. The biggest lens I use is the Pana/Leica 100-400 Lumix G and it is amazing to use on the 1-X and I don't notice the size or weight of the camera and lens. I almost traded it a year or so back for an OM1 but fortunately saw sense, I can safely say this camera won't ever leave my collection. My only wish is that OM systems produced one or two more firmware updates to bring it up to spec with the EM1 Mk3; features such as additional AI recognition for focus and perhaps the 'starry sky AF' mode.

This has been a really interesting video for me as I have very recently bought a used E-M1x because it came at a price that I simply could not refuse. I had been deeply skeptical of the body due to its large size and I thought that it woud not work for me, but I was very wrong. It has easily become my favourite camera to use. I have still kept my E-M1 ii thanks to some occasions calling for a smaller body and the fact that the E-M1x is not comfortable with an arca-swiss plate permanently attached. I am aware that there is a custom designed plate that is sold in America, but being in the UK that makes for a prohibitive cost (more than half of what I paid for the camera). For the E-M1 ii I have a body forming L-plate that can stay on permanently. For that matter, I still have and regularly use my E-M1 original as it is even smaller again than the mk ii - but that is another story. So far, every E-M1 I have had, I have kept and found a regular use for.

Since I bought my first SLR as a 15 yr old from my first self-earned money I always had owning a true pro body on my mind. Pro meaning to me a combination of technology, build quality and ergonomics. At that time this would have been a Canon F-1 (maybe an even more unaffordable LEICAflex SL otherwise) , so I contented myself with a FTb N back in 1973. Forty years later I had to decide which way to go and after a lot of comparisons including pixel-peeping on shots made on EOS 6D, D610 and OLY E-M5 I decided to go the revolutionary way with the mirrorless MFT which I never regretted from then to now. But though using the HLD-6 right from the start I always had my problems with its poor ergonomics of too few and too small buttons. And then in 2022 I took the chance of buying the E-M1X at a very reasonable price and I'm calling myself an all-over happy photographer since then. No matter if landscape or portrait it just slides into my right hand with all controls in place and performs just as a camera should in my opinion: a real mighty tool in a photographer's hands. Not only I wouldn't have been able to ever afford its 2019 competitors EOS 1 DX Mk iii or D6 and even less the quality lenses from 14 to 600mm focal lenght, and even if I would, I still wasn't able to store it in my 20l backpack and carry them around all day. And moreover these 2019 PRO cameras wouldn't provide me the three things that changed my way of photographing the most over tha last years: 1) The EVF allowing me to preview every shot much better than any optical viewfinder ever did, including magnification of details you wouldn't see unmagnified no matter how high resoultion the viewfinder might have and in colors exactly matching the out-of-camera-JPEGs, btw. a specific strength of the E-M1X LCD viewfinder compared to the higher res AMOLED ones. And moreover it makes me view and change all important settings without even taking my eye off the viewfinder, that's just priceless. 2) The Incredible IBIS allowing shots at incredible slow shutter speeds, enabling to shoot wonderfully motion-blurred subjects in front of crisp-clear backgrounds. 3) ProCapture based on the beloved full-electronic-shutter that makes you even catch the moments before you decided to press the button. Ok, a bit more support in finding the best of all those shots afterwards would be welcome 😏, but in a lot situations it makes you take shots you wouldn't be able to take with other cameras. Yes, you're right: For me the E-M1X is simply the best!

I own and use daily for professional work, 2x em1x cameras. Each with 2 batteries and 1 backup battery in case. I can say that the em1x is an extension of myself and my creative abilities. From the button layout to the feel in hand. What I like the most is the responsiveness , it feels like a Dslr to me in the way the shutter works and the quickness of operation. My only complaint is the face detect af when the background has a good bit of contrast also. It jumps to the background no matter what af target area or Afs and AFc mode I choose. Other than that it’s perfect. The level of detail this camera retains at high iso levels is downright crazy for a micro four thirds camera. Last point, I have two Olympus fl900r flashes and it’s hands down the best flashes I have ever used and owned and it pairs perfectly with the em1x.

To be honest, I miss using the EM-1X. Being someone who now own a Nikon Z9 and OM system OM-1 primary doing birding photography, both of these two more modern models are definitely more capable in terms of performance and subject tracking but in terms of overall performance including functionality and ergonomics, they can’t be compared to my now sold and miss EM-1X. None of these current models feature a thermometer, a altimeter and detailed GPS location sensor like the EM-1X. The ergonomics are second to none. All the buttons placement is almost perfect. I miss shooting with it but have to say the subject tracking now still lacking comparing to the more modern models so it’s sad that om system probably won’t have a successor to this model. I will definitely get one if they put all the OM-1 tech in it.

Built-in GPS is one reason I'm leaning towards buying a used EM-1X. I currently have an OM-1 and love it, but I find it a small pain to have to remember to enable GPS tracking in OI Share app on my phone whenever I geotag photos (which is all the time).

I shoot weddings with a pair of EM1X’s, switched from Canon FF, and have no regrets. So many great things about the EM1X. The images are totally amazing, but you need to use flash and off camera strobes inside dark rooms….which I do anyway. I think up to ISO 3200 with flash you still get pretty clean images. Noise in the shadows can be remedied. Really happy with these cameras!

Great review - agree with it all. I shoot in very harsh conditions, have two of these, have complete confidence in them. The X is one of two cameras that I can say 'I love you' to - the other is my '04 E-1. I said I completely agree with you - but I don't: the X isn't 'a big camera'. It's smaller than the E-5 I used to shoot with, but not so small that if you want to shoot long tele the camera feels like just a control panel on the back of a lens. The X gave new life to my big SHQ glass that was a pain to use with E-M1 - the balance with 3.6kg lenses is superb. And it's a fast camera that feels like a part of your body... never getting in the way. OM will need to do something very special if they want to follow it in a meaningful way. Personally, I'm hoping for a small (M1 sized) weather-sealed, system camera with a Monochrome sensor that can double for street and landscape duties. Fat chance....

I bought my first M1X in 2019. In 2022 I sold and bought OM-1. Currently, I still have the OM-1, but I have 2 M1Xs with it and I use them 90% of the time, the OM-1 only rarely. I shoot dogs every day and the OM-1 dog AI works great when I shoot in a standing position. If the dog is running or moving in action, the M1X's continuous autofocus (without tracking) works better than the OM-1's dog detection. I usually use the 75mm 1.8, or less often the 40-150 2.8 Pro. In addition, the M1X's ergonomics and grip are much better, especially when it's in my hand for 4-5 hours a day. I shoot events and people on the street once a week, and here I prefer the M1X, even though I don't use very large lenses. ( 17-25-45 1.2 Pro ) I photograph street people for fun on weekends, I often use the old 25mm 1.8 with an M1X hanging around my neck. I will be curious if there will be a successor, or if this will be the last well-built PRO machine from Olympus or OM System.

Yes it is (or was) the most professional camera Olympus ever made. It now is my main camera, I have two of them. I will never replace it with an OM-1, unless they add the X to it. The only flaw is the elimination of a grip strap lug, which is present on the battery grips of the older models.
@esfowle3 ай бұрын
I would love to have an E-M1X. I have a tendency ro add the additional grips to all of my Olympus cameras for additional grip position as well as the extended battery life. I do shoot with longer lenses, and like the balance with the additional grip added on. But there are times when I strip down my E-M5 II to just the base body and run the pancake 14-42 EZ or one of the small 1.8 primes for a small and compact walk around kit. I still run my first M43 camera, the E-P2, if I want a small camera setup. But as I do more and more wildlife and sports photography, the more I appreciate having the larger bodies for their capabilities and the balance.

I actually have two nowadays and despite also owning two OM-1’s, I still love the EM1x, I often even prefer it over the newer model for photography. Well built you say? You bet! My first EM1x has +150k clicks and has been heavily used in all possible weather and circumstances! The second camera I have spared and it has only 800 clicks. When I pick them up I am unable to discern which one is the 150k and which is the 800… They still feel exactly the same! And I mean everything feels the same! (I have to check the shutter count to be certain) This is not the case with my two OM-1s where the one with 30k clicks feels MUCH older than the one with only 1k clicks! I will NEVER sell my EM1x-es! Keep up your GREAT WORK! Cheers Rikard

Olympus or now OM systems will always be part of my photography but I’m also a fan of the Nikon D850 which is an amazing DSLR full frame camera that i use for landscape photography because of its amazing resolution not because it’s better or worse but at times it’s fun to use other gear. Its funny reading these comments - the E-M1X received nothing but derision when it was first announced. Now that people have had several years to use them, it's receiving almost nothing but fanmail. It's a lesson in being patient and open to new things, they might surprise us. A lesson we'll never learn... The "big" comment was always interesting. Well, of course it's big - it's got an integrated battery grip, which is a preferred shape for a sports & wildlife camera. But it's waaayyy smaller and lighter than other cameras of that form factor, such as a Canon 1DX MkII. And it's not much bigger than an E-M1 Mark 1, 2, or 3 with a battery grip. And also - Olympus didn't get rid of anything when they launched it, there was still a full product range of small cameras. Why exactly did people complain? There are two aspects to digital cameras: they are computers that generate RAW files, and they are hand tools that photographers interact with in the act of shooting photos. The industry is obsessed with tiny differences on the computer side of the equation, when in reality pretty much all modern cameras are good to amazing computer RAW generators. There's comparatively little discussion about the hand tool aspect, which (to me at least) is where there are huge differences between cameras. The E-M1X is a computer that produces professional-grade RAW files but there are tons of cameras that produce better, assuming you can tell the difference in real situations (and if pixel peeping is truly important to you, go for it). As a hand tool, it's got to be one of the best ever.

The E-M1X, I was waiting and looking forward to this Camera to be released, when I saw it in person and held it for the first time I just couldn't pull the trigger, I found it just to big so I bought the EM-1Mk2 instead, I don't regret that as that is another great camera so the EM1X broke my heart in a way, maybe I should have just got one but I didn't, it is still one of the best handling cameras I have ever held though, perhaps a missed opportunity, I miss Olympus!!

I would love to see a camera like this release with a stacked, higher mp sensor. I got an E-M1 II and I keep contemplating getting one of these eventually. Is it worth getting one of these compared to the OM-1?

The EM1X was a tremendous camera body. I enjoyed using it with my 150-400F4.5 Pro

Matt Granger said that the E-M1x was at least at tough as his main camera at the time, a Nikon D5. I think that says a lot. Also, I would LOVE to see an updated 'OM-1x' version of this camera. I'd definitely set aside some money for it. I don't think anyone who's buying the large and expensive lenses(especially the 150-400) would have a problem with a larger, pro body.

I bought 2 EM1X 's when I sold my Nikon gear a few years ago. Then I went to the photo show at NEC and was convinced to get the OM1. I am ashamed to say the EM1X's have hardly been out, still in boxes. I jumped to OM Systems just as the OM1 came out. I do like the EM1X, but OM1 has better tracking and EVF.

"One of the best handling cameras of all time" Yes, yes, yes! Sure, it's a heavy and bulky camera, but I absolutely love using it. It's still in my bag every time I go out with my OM-1ii, and these days has my macro custom modes stored on it. I have never used a camera I prefer using. The PEN-F is more fun, and the OM-1ii has more reliable subject detection and better frame rates, but the E-M1X is what dreams are made of.

Outstanding camera. Bought it used for ~$800. Feels brand new. Use it for bird photography with Olympus 100-400 and 40-150 f/2.8 with teleconvertors. Enjoy each minute i have it in my hands!

The only integrated type camera I've ever used was a Nikon F5. Like I understand why people want that type of body. With that said, it's hard to dispute the benefits of having modularity. I like having the options of either going small without the grip or if needed, attaching a grip for when I need the controls, ergonomics, and counterbalance.

Hello Jim i have this camera and the OM-1 mk1 and i love them both the Om-DE-M1X fits my hands perfectly and if i didn’t have the OM-1 i would use it a lot more i wont sell it because i don’t sell things i also still have my OM-5 and and old E-3 and all the lenses so a bit of a collection . I like your videos and your informative content just a suggestion maybe talk a little more about your settings and work flow ,might be good for people who are new to photography.

OM Systems discounted it to clear a couple of years ago but could not quite afford it. Just looked at MPB and under £600. Always liked it and a big step up from my EM1 MKII (which is the best camera I've ever owned). Might have to buy a lottery ticket.

I LOVE mine so much that I have money set aside for a new OM-1X should OM release one. If that doesn't happen, I'll shop for a second EM-1X. I prefer it to the OM-1 (granted I don't have one and may feel differently if I did) and it's just an awesome camera in every way.

I have one and I'm holding onto it for now. People who think it's big haven't lugged around something like the Nikon D4S with a big lens all day.

I agree completely. I think that all the online whining about the camera's size was pure silliness. What are too large are the top line sports bodies from Canikony with their huge and expensive lenses, considering that the photos will mostly appear on mobile phone or tablet displays.

Thank you for this video. I have been wondering about how the X would stack up against the new 1 mk 2. I am surprised that OM Systems didn’t follow on with the integrated grip for their flagship

I use Nikon but when this camera came out I wanted one., The ergos look G.O.A.T from what I can see of it. This and the Fuji GFX 50r are the two camera bodies I'd love to own based purely on looks

E-M1X is still a solid option, even for video today you can pair with a ninja recorder for RAW hdmi output recording. If M43 sensors can break past true 14-16 stops of dynamic range then a refresh of this flagship would be more than welcomed to bring life back to all the amazing Olympus pro lenses.

Loved the EM1x, the feel in the hand, performance, etc. Wish OM would release an upgrade with new sensor, better dynamic range, more computational features, better auto focus, etc. Don't see this in the immediate future. I think OM Systems is barely hanging on in a shrinking market.

I do regret trading in my E-M1X for the OM-1. The E-M1X was a great camera. I would love to see the OM-1 MkII in an E-M1X body with dual processors and the active cooling.

How do you use focus and metering with The Canon lens I ve seen in you video?
@Red35Photography3 ай бұрын
Metering is via the sensor so you don't need to do anything. But with manual lenses like the Canon FD, you can only use either M or A modes. Auto ISO is also supported. Focus is done using peaking and magnify. I customised two buttons at the front to do that.

I had the Em-1X which I really liked but I had an issue with it. For some reason it would drain the batteries even when just stored in my case. I turned off the GPS but that didn’t help. As much as I like using the EM-1X, I was always worried that the batteries were going to be low when I used it. I think I prefer using a battery grip on my OM-1 I as it gives me the option of smaller body when I don’t need the extra bulk but can use the grip when I do.

I have the OM1 and find myself leaving the battery grip on for the 150-600 lens and the 40-150 2.8. The balance is better.
