My photography journey started with a second hand EPL1. Somewhere along the way I discovered that you could adapt vintage lenses, and the rest was history. Found a lovely Zenit fitted with a Helios 44, mounted it to the EPL1 and never looked back. It was with that setup that learned about how depth of field works, how to judge focal length without looking through the viewfinder first, even learned Sunny 16 on it. The EPL1 has an awesome feature of turning off all digital data in the viewfinder, and that feature allowed me to learn exposure without relying on a meter. I haven’t used any other camera that allows you to do this. I still have that camera and it’s an amazing little machine.

Anything outside these parameters and you get to see how slow and difficult it is to get a good clear sharp picture 😊 Colours are just beautiful and the images have a film quality on them and yes the built quality of the camera should be used as a reference on how to build feel in a camera. Where do you find those deals and how broken are the cameras? I can only find deals for exactly double the price over here, in Euros, otherwise I'd have a shelf full of X-E1s and at least one X-E3 by now, it's by far my favorite body/style.
@mrstandfast22124 жыл бұрын
The Olympus is indeed a wonderful little camera, however I agree that the Fuji is better for one significant reason and that is the presence of a viewfinder. I still use my X-E1 and it's only drawback is a slight shutter lag. I bought it because it's size, shape and layout reminded me of the 35mm rangefinders I love. The small Jupiter lenses suit the XE-1 perfectly, and it handles Nikon lenses perfectly well.

The Panasonic G1 actually came out just before the E-P1. I bought a G1 when it came out and then an E-P1 when it came out then an E-P2 when it came out because it would take an electronic viewfinder. My E-P2 has since been converted to infrared and I still use it. The E-P1 has been on a shelf for a long time. I should take it down. A printer in the US, Ctein, sold some prints through The Online Photographer website to show just how good this new format was. He did a 16x20 print from an E-P1 with the Olympus 45/1.8 lens. It was as good a print as you could want. Sharp with excellent color. I now have an OMD EM1 Mark II and an E-P5 but that E-P1 is such a pretty camera and it can still take great pictures!

Recently bought a second hand E-PL7 for 100 swiss francs (around £85 today) which gives a little more control and the wifi is useful in today's world for sharing photos. Sad to think that Olympus is likely to fade away under its new ownership. They are a great company with some very overlooked kit. The only good news is that hopefully there should now be a steady supply of good quality lenses, etc. coming out into the market.

Yes, I purchased a used E-PM1 recently which I believe is the updated version of the E-P1. I will say though, the live screen is definitely showing its age now, in terms of poor brightness, colour and resolution. Doesn't effect the final pictures of course, just means you have to generally ignore or compensate for the poor live screen impression. If you can overcome that hurdle, then you are getting a lot under the hood of these cameras. They can certainly make a very suitable second camera for the intermediate amateur M43's photographer.

Qute indeed! I've been meaning to check one out for a while now - thanks for the tip!
@bchoward00004 жыл бұрын
@@zenography7923 Came here to say the same thing! The Q is seriously underrated: most of what you like about the EP-1, but add focus peaking/zoom, great Pentax UI (which makes for a seamless transition from Pentax DSLRs), and compatibility with most 8mm film video lenses, plus their own awesome line up from Pentax. The original model also had a full metal case, which just feels quality.

It’s from a time when photographers were happy to get a digital version of film cameras rather than needing to chase much technical features produced for market share by manufacturers but rarely needed by consumers

It is indeed rechargeable, and I think (though I may be wrong) that all the ep cameras share the same battery.

@@zenography7923 The batteries are still available both at knock off (Wasabi etc) and from Olympus - it is the same battery as the OMD E-10 and current epl series. Look for bls 50.

I had these cameras EP-1 for almost 8 years, the only problem right now is all the camera button is not working.There is a red mark IS1 keep flashing which give difficulties to control my camera. Do you have any idea how can I fit it?

Well, your camera clearly has a fault, but I couldn't say what it is. Short of trying a new memory card I can't really help, sorry.

I think there is a future classic in Panasonic Lumix GM 1 and 5, especially the 5 with the EVF. With the Pana Leica 15/1,7, I think it's the modern digi Contax T2 and T3. By the way, take a look on the famous Nikkor 105/2.5 PC. One of the best lenses out there, and you can get one of those for $ 100. I paid $ 200 for mine, in pristine condition. I use it with my m43 cameras with the Metabones Speedbooster, and then it has about the same range and aperture as the Oly 75/1.8. One of the best m43 primes there is, but the Nikkor is better.

@Zenography Hello, it is I again, with an update. Traded in the 14-42. Now have a nice triplet of lenses: a 12-50, a 40-150, and finally a 45 1:1.8. Also bought an E-P8, but sadly the display died when I got caught out in the rain last summer (the camera got damp while in my backpack)

I love, collect, and regularly use this first 12 megapixel lot, I have 3 E-P3 bodies & 1 E-P2. I would have no reason to buy the E-P1, as the absence of the highly praised VF-2 viewfinder option is a needless dealbreaker. I say needless because you can pick up a P2 for the same price as a P1, so why would you want to do that, unless of course you prefer shooting off the rear LCD, but not for me. P.S. - You don’t sacrifice an ounce of beauty, as the bodies are virtually identical.

i respectfully disagree. i think when it comes to best value for money digital mirrorless system cameras, nothing in the world can beat the sony alpha 6000. you basically get everything you get in modern fully fledged cameras. just a little bit older version but in some regards quite comparable specs. plus with a cheap speedbooster, you basically get full frame performance with vintage glass or adapted canon lenses. i mean in most comparison kategories, an alpha 6000 is as good, if not better than a freaking canon 80D which will cost you 4 times that and is 4 years newer...i can not find this olympus camera below 150 bucks in good condition and with kit lens where i live... and the alpha 6000 which i got for 230 with lens and everything is way better. i mean the fact that sony still sells this model new after 9 years speaks for itself...

Too much saturation & over sharpeningfor my tastes, and way too mech saturation for a Kodachrome look. I use Classic Chrome with my Fujifilm shooting, & on the Olympus I use the Muted setting with the Saturation & Sharpening set at minus 2 for a more natural low key look than their actual Natural setting.
