Sweeping Stage 9 of the 2023 Olympus Rally. This stage was the second time the teams tackled the longest stage of the rally (18.8 miles if memory serve correct.) The first half was a mess, the second half is some of my favorite stage roads in the area.
First up was getting car 625 onto the roadway where their service crews could get their car on the trailer. I was ready to go forward, when I was asked to go backwards at last moment. No problem, I can abide. Yanked them back, passed on my number in case they needed help putting the car onto the trailer and moved along my way.
The next car was only a hundred yards away.
Car 799 suffered a mechanical failure and needed to be towed off the stage to their crew... nearly 10 miles. It was quite the haul in the mud and the gunk. Part way through I actually killed the camera knowing it was going to be a long slow trip.
There was some excitement, though, that was missed. First up was Car 29 which was being attended to by S95. Immediately after that, the tow point on Car 799 snapped. We ended up coasting the car down the hill and I reattached the tow rope to their frame and got them to their trailer.
I both love and hate this stage. The first half is technical, and serves up some less-than-ideal surfaces. The second half is fast, open, but also gives a bit of a technical squeeze at the end.
All said and done, everyone made it home safe. And that is my job.
