It's been my go to travel lens with one body ever since it came out. It's been on a G9, a EM1.2, and now the OM1. If I need a wider angle (for cityscapes and inside buildings), I carry a two lens set comprising of the 8-25 f/4 and 40-150 f/4, but I've found the 12mm on the wide end to be sufficient for 90% of my needs, so the 12-100 will always be my default lens for travel.

My go to for travel really depends on what I'm doing. When I did a long distance walk in Ireland I took my EM5iii with a macro and the 12-45 f4 Pro, but on a recent trip to the Galapagos I took the 12-100 and 100-400 on EM1iii. I think the 12-100 will be seeing lots more use, like you I like the reach. I also have the 12-200 (I had it before I got the 12-100 used). I don't really think I can justify both but the 12-200 is nice on a trip with a touch of extra reach if I only have one lens.

I'm going to be travelling soon and I intend to take this and the 20mm f.1.4 pro for shooting indoors in museums or cathedrals where a larger lens may stand out more. This will be my first time taking the 12-100 out for landscape and city shooting, excited to see how it fares!

Enjoyed, but In fairness; this set up isn’t small, it’s just smaller compared to larger camera systems. Something like a Rx1007 is small for a 12-200, but it is a 1 inch sensor- my frequent companion on long hikes. Lovely photos!

So far I just have the OM-1 and also have a number of lenses: the 40-150 f2.8 and the 300 f4 for photographing birds (I've ordered the 150-400 f4.5, but have been waiting for a very long time), the 12-40 f2.8 that I got with the camera, and then recently I got the 8-25 f4 and the 40-150 f4. Recently I traveled to visit family in Alaska and did not have a lot of room for lenses. I brought along just the 8-25 f4, which I love for wide angle and landscape, and the 40-150 f4, for both landscape and some wildlife. I got some lovely landscapes and some bear photos. I found this to be a really nice, light, combination to bring traveling. I have been thinking about the OM-5 to use with these lenses. I've also thought about the 12-100, but the 40-150 is much lighter and gives more reach -- though I then need the second lens for wider angle landscapes.

I gave an EM5 mk lll which I pair with a 12-200mm which I really like. I am complete amateur. I also have 17mm 1.8 and the 60 mm macro. Those 3 lenses cover everything I do .

I had a Tamron 14-150 as my go-to lens for a long time. Then I bought an EM5 Mk3 which was bundled with the 12-45 Pro. I really liked the slightly wider short end, but found myself wanting a little more reach at times. After agonizing over the price, I bought a good used 12-100. If I want a compact setup for general travel usage, this is it.
@BobbyN-P Жыл бұрын
I always bring my 12-100 with me when I travel around, everytime I leave it at home I tend to regret it so it's basically glued to my camera now. The OM5 looks interesting, I didn't put a lot of attention to it when it was released to be honest because I was more interested in the OM1, but having done some introspection I've realized that OM5 probably does everything I need and a little more for the photography I tend to do, and in a small package. I often use the high resolution mode in my PenF, and the more advanced handheld version in OM5 is interesting to me. Thank you for another great video 😎👍

I also have the OM-1 and the OM-5. They are a great combo. With the OM-5 I kit it with the 12-40/4.0 and the 40-150/4.0 and the 20/1.4 prime. I usually use the OM-1 for my serious camera and the OM-1 for my family outings. You video go me thinking that I should carry both cameras on my wildlife outings and have the 12-100/4.0 on the OM-5.

Very good recommendations and beautiful images. I think the 1.8 M.Zuiko lenses fit that OM5 perfectly (you can literally carry the camera in your pocket). Although you have explained that you are a zoom user, an M.Zuiko 17mm turns the OM5 into that camera that goes unnoticed (in addition to being light, if the chosen color is black), with the M.Zuiko 12-45 it is another combination that is very comfortable for me (it is having a zoom with great zoom capacity throughout its focal range, but with a tiny size and lightness). a cordial greeting

Hahahaha....loved your opening comment... so true about my style too. In my compact camera days I would come back with a huge collection of reportage style photos, landscapes, landmarks etc. Just a few close-ups on flowers or birds that were new or exotic to me... now I mostly have my 75-300mm lens on my EM1.2 so it's completely opposite, 90% wildlife, 5% macro/closeups :D so at my last trip I at least took my EPM2 and 14mm so I could take a few portraits, even selfies and landscapes. I also have a 14-150mm lens which I thought I'd be using all the time, but rarely put it on... I have been pushing myself to develop a better eye for landscapes and cityscapes, including with 14mm and 30mm primes to hopefully become more versatile again. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and inspirations!

Please consider trying the 14-150mm lens with your small OM-5 for general all purpose walk around photography when traveling with your other gear. (I have it as well as the 12-100mm lens we all love, but the 12-100mm is much larger and heavier than the 14-150mm.) The 14-150mm is optically very good, weather sealed and is close focusing even zoomed to 150mm (300mm equivalent excellent for butterflies etc.). I too am a wildlife photographer relying when traveling mostly on the 150-400 f/4, the 40-150 f/2.8, the 12-100 f/4 adapted with a Nisi 77mm close-up lens for macro focus stacking. I also bring the tiny Lowa 7.5mm f/2 for super-wide environmental closeups and architectural interiors. BTY, I do a lot of video with the all these lenses and have excellent magnetic variable ND filters for quick on/off to knock down the exposures for the slow video frame rates/shutter speeds.

I thought I will carry my 14-150mm all the time on my EM1 (now mk II), but ended up using 75-300mm the most. 14-150mm is handy on my EPM2, fits well in a small bad in my bike basket for varied snapshots on the way to and from work. Better AF would help. But EPM2 is not too shabby, even managed to shoot some parrots in flight. Agree that it's sharp and light! Less than 500g total on my EPM2.

I bought this 12-100/4 lens for my EM-5III. Great lens. Now I'm sad that there is nothing similar for my Pentax. DA18-135/3.5-5.6WR is my most used lens on K mount, but optically that Olympus is completely different level. And any DA*16-135/4 probably will never happen. Range is excellent. It is wide enough for most photos. It does some telephoto too. And image quality is exceptional! Not only resolution, but also pleasant bokeh. The only issue is, that I bough M4/3 system as a small travell companion. It started with cheap 2nd hand EPL-6 and 14-42. And damn now I am carrying again camera with large heavy lens :D Combination with Oly 75-300 and this 12-100/4 is very good too.

OM5 = take an E-M1III, squeeze it into a cheaper body, use a slightly worse shutter with worse specs, keep the menus the same, slap the OM branding on it, et voilà, you got the OM5. Oh yes, and price it like a brand new to market product rather than the identical, better product which has been on the market for years.
