On the third day of the 18th Lok Sabha, Om Birla was re-elected as the Speaker of the House through a voice vote, defeating the opposition candidate Kodikkunil Suresh on June 26. After the election, members of parliament welcomed the Speaker, with opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav requesting Birla to remain impartial following which PM Modi introduced the Union Cabinet in the lower house.
