You make an excellent point about letting the camera do a lot of the work. I believe many of us have become a bit full of ourselves in thinking that leaning on the technology somehow diminishes us as photographers. It does seem unfair that someone who hasn’t put in the time and hard work to learn like many of my fellow old curmudgeon photographers have, can quickly get similar results it took us years to achieve. Many people said the same about me when I started in the 70’s because my film OM-1 had a built in meter and coupled lenses. And so it goes….. I have an OM-1 on the way to relieve my E-m1.2 . I’m looking forward to unapologetically letting the new computational technology improvements make my life a little easier.

Thank you for the comment. Yes if you have the tools to help you, then use them. At the end, your camera is not composing the photo for you. It is still your vision and you are using your camera to help you realize it.

Totally agree with you. Years ago, before synchromesh manual gearboxes in cars, we had to double-declutch in order to change gear. We don't now because we have that synchromesh facility but that doesn't diminish us a drivers. There's nothing wrong with using modern tools. Why have a dog and bark yourself?

I have the 60mm macro, too. One suggestion for using 1:1/manual focus with this lens easily without having to keep your finger on the rotary switch is to assign one of the camera's function buttons (I use the convex button on the front near the lens mount) to switch between automatic and manual focus. Then, just press this button, rotate the lens's dial to 1:1 and you can focus in the usual macro way by moving the camera towards or away from the subject. This may not be necessary with the new lens, but this may be of use to those using the 60mm lens.
@EmilieT Жыл бұрын
Yes that is way to keep the 1:1 ratio. With the OM-1 I use the AF-on to get in and out of manual focusing if needed but most of my macro is manual with this lens.

Both Olympus and Panasonic need to get back into more compact cameras. Sonly is selling boat loads of compacts proving that it can be done, if the camera has the feature set that aligns with what most people want, which is currently content creation for social media, and vlogging. Panasonic proved they did not understand customer needs when they released the G100. All it needed was PDAF and IBIS and it had neither. The Olympus compacts are not great for video, so they also get written out of the script. A Pen F with flippy screen and decent video choices would be a huge seller. PDAF and IBIS would make the G100 a kjller choice, and a big hit. Unfortunately, neither the new Olympus team, nor the Lumix team seem to be dialed-in on current needs, and how the world is begging for updated compacts.

I was so delighted by the images you showed, Emilie - thank you for sharing them and showcasing the strengths of this new lens. Sadly, it will likely remain beyond my budget for some time to come, but that's life. I chose OM Systems/Olympus when I found I needed to reduce the weight of my gear and have no regrets. The build quality is several steps up from my Fujifilm gear. I was just beyond my teens when Olympus shocked the camera world with the original OM-1 system (yes, I'm quite the antique!), and it seems to me that as a camera company it has a rich history of originality and innovative features that leaves their competition gasping. I suspect you may be right about this lens receiving many accolades.

Hello Emilie, I have already the 90mm Macro and it's a gamechanger. I would suggest for the function of the L-FN button the Foto Stack Function. You switch it on or off very quickly and you can get in the menue of this Function also very quickly. If you alllow me to give another advice, it would be the L-Bracket from RRS for the OM-1. It's expensiv, but you can hold the camera without the battery grip much much better, because there your small finger finds a better hold. It makes the camera ca. 5mm thicker. Best regards from Bavaria Matthias

You mention the idea of pairing the 90mm with the 150-400, in place of the 40-150 - I use those together all the time. When you get your own 90mm, I hope you can report back on how that works out for you. I do more tele-macro with the 150-400 & 300, and while I love the 60mm, I probably use the TG6 more for extreme macro. I'm on the fence if the 90 makes any sense for my uses, so that idea of trying it in place of the 40-150 is interesting.

Like you, I am excited about this new Olympus macro. Such a pity it has to have that OM System name on it, because it really does have that Olympus greatness in it. I am stillsaving to get it. As I shoot exclusively on Lumix, I am hoping to see a review of the lens on Lumix cameras. I wonder if I could program the Lfn button on Lumix, because programming it for focus stacking would be perfect if necessary. I used to own and use the Canon 180mm f3.5L, and I adored that lens, but sold my Canon gear to switch to MFT. I got some of my best work with that lens, and so I am very pleased that this new 90mm f3.5 is now available. Like you, I constantly use the 60 macro. It is fabulously sharp, but its build quality and ergonomics is not the greatest. As you say, its biggest limitation is the too short focal length. I love macro lenses, and for a lot more than just macro work. Most of my use cases would better be described as 'close focus' rather than macro, and so I also have, besides the Olympus 60, I have the Leica 45mm and Lumix 30mm. The Lumix 30 is like the 90, a more recent lens than either the 45 or the 60, and the more recently designed MFT gear is so much better than that older MFT gear, and I am looking forward to this new 90. To complete my macro lens collection, I will eventually get the old Nikon 200mm f4. It will of course be manual only adapted to MFT, and have no stabilization, but despite its limitations, the equivalent 400mm focal length is very tempting to me, and will have its uses.

Nice update on new lens by an OM ambassador who is not over-enthusiastic like other Olympus ambassador. OM-System seemed to be stepping up technology features into macro photography more intense than other brands for producing better photographs albeit still not affordable to many. Hopefully, OM System will be able to produce equally affordable lenses over time, once they recoup their early development cost. In the mean, time I have also tried more affordable Olympus camera & lenses to experience M43 advantages over from its peer Nikon Z. Will weigh OM System from there & see if it has become affordable… At the moment their prices are crazy. Make it affordable before the China Mainland lens makers keep up with them.😊

I am so excited about this lens, even though I can't afford it right now! This is a perfect design and is everything I hoped for in a macro lens, with the exception of the aperture being a little small. Have you tried using this lens with extension tubes and teleconverters? Is it possible to stack teleconverters by putting extension tubes in between them? I saw some videos a while back in which someone was able to use a teleconverter on the 60mm macro by putting extension tubes in between the teleconverter and the lens, so I'm wondering if it is possible to stack teleconverters that way. I might have to give that a try on my 40-150, even though it isn't really the best tool for macro photography. Actually, it's not bad. I think the MC-20, it's a full frame equivalent of .84x and I've had good success using it to take photos of butterflies in flight and things like that, but I normally reach for the 60mm when I want to get really close. But stacking teleconverters with extension tubes in between seems like an approach that would have more practical use on the 90mm macro, if it's possible.

I would love this lens, but I recently got the Nikon 105mm macro for my Z camera, and I already own the 60mm Olympus. How many macro lenses should one really own. A first world problem I guess. I know what you mean about the focus on the 60mm. A clutch would have been wonderful, or even better, a mechanically coupled focus ring. I found the whole transition from 4/3 to MFT - as far as lenses are concerned - completely underwhelming. It's taken many years for Oly to start coming out with glass that genuinely impresses, rather than just building down for the mantra of 'size and weight'.
