Great trouble shooting on the AF toggle issue. Don't know why OM has not made you an educator. You are the best trainer they have for general issues. No fluff just good information

I'm not new to watching your videos but this is the first time I have made a comment regarding them. I admire how you approach a problem and how you are selfless in passing on the solution to others. I enjoy trying to work things out for myself but I find with your help there is always something else I may have overlooked. This is where this video comes in, I was having the same problem with s-af and m, I have my af-on button assigned to toggle between the two, but if I turned off the camera Om1 it did what you explained so clear. Thank you for your dedication in creating this channel you deserve far more credit for what you are doing.

Hey Rob, wanted to take a minute to give you props. I'm not sure how many systems have someone like you that does as much as you do for Olympus users. So hats off and many thanks to the time you put into teaching and sharing your knowledge about the OM/Olympus systems.

For left hand usage: use the camera on a tripod, flip out the monitor, setup touch function for autofocus and shot taking. so you would have a lot of access with one hand.

I hope your shoulder heals well. I have a few suggestions: when your moving keep that camera strap around your neck. Don’t drop it. I use my camera on a Platypod with a small ball head and leave them connected. I don’t use the legs much. Just set the plate down. If you need to get higher, hang the strap on a fence post or something sturdy. While holding the camera steady use OI share on your cellphone as a remote. Let us know what works for you.

Hi Rob, I broke my right shoulder in a motorbike accident several years ago and remember using my e-m10 mk ii upside down. The viewfinder and lcd were oriented fine and somehow the views on review righted themselves when I reviewed the Images later with the camera upright. Bit of a learning curve but I was able to take reasonable photos of my baby daughter.

Thanks I have a good one for you Rob If using 2 sd card and you set i want to save only to 1 card say card 2 for raw and want to save video to sd card 1 The camera will thennot let you see you both sd cards at the same time in the review The way i figured it out is that if your on say manual mode or aperature then you see the images i sd card 2 in this example and you need to switch to video mode to view saved video files on sd card 1. Sharing as it took a minute to figure out

Thanks for the tip. That's cool the camera knows to switch card slots based on the mode you're in. The way I've done it in the past is to push and hold the play button, then rotate the dial to switch cards.

Rob, I love your channel and all your great advice. Thank you SO much! I keep a Rob Trek playlist on my KZbin channel and refer to it often. One question (I have an OM-1): as a relatively new photographer, I don’t know when I should choose a high res setting vs. a focus stacked image, it I want a precise extra-pixel image. When should I best use each? Thanks so much!

Hi Rob, re the OM-1 focus 'bug' issue. I had this problem and was advised by OM-S to use the FN function lever to mode 2 - this allows switching from mf to s-af (or c-af) as req'd and is not affected by sw on/off the camera. Hope that helps until a fix. Keep up the great work 📷
@RobTrek

Using the FN lever is probably the more common way to switch af modes. Probably how this got overlooked.

Hi Rob. First thank for all your work. 2nd. I HAVE THE SOLUTION for the "bug" of MF toggling. Simple, for change autofocus, while pressing the right arrow, rotate the ring (the anterior one is easier) and you can choose between S-AF /C-AF / C-AF track etc etc. No need to chenge lever or something else. Maybe it is not a bug, but a new mode to interpretate the functions. Still, old toggle seems better to me. The best could be Toggling + ring rotation. I hope you can give me back solutions for 2 my questions: 1) can i fix the autofocus with a button? I want Automatic focus, not manual, and i want to lock in a point and mantain locked without pressing something like a back focus button... i prefer something like on/off (like AEL). But, most important, when i click to take the photo, the autofocus doesn't have to refocus. With pro lens it easy locking manual focus ring, but losing autofocus if needed. I just want to lock the focus! 2) i assign to */- upper button (near the REC red one) the MultiFN function that, like the S-AF/MF item before, could be navigate rotating the ring. But i always use my first item in the MultiFN menu, which is MAGNIFIER, for better focusing. If i press one time the +/- button first it select a green rectangualr area, the second time i press it magnify the photo (rotatin i can zoom in/out), and the third time it comes back to the rectangular area. But, for exiting, i need to press touch controll off on the touch screen. Can i change this? it slows down me a lot. Sorry if i write so much, hope other friends with OM-1 could appreciate the solution :)

How do you keep your camera looking so good? After a year of gentle use, my preview button label is all gone and camera edges beginning to chip. Others have reported similar rate of wear.

I use my OM-1 primarily on a tripod for work. I have c1,c2,c3 setup for the things I need. So I usually only use the joystick to move the focus point and rarely need to use any buttons. My PenF on the other hand, is a bit scuffed up.

Thanks for the info .... Rob Trek live view boost Hi Rob, I have a question for you. I had the live view manual mode in the "on1". Whenever I change a setting, the screen shows up as a normal image. But I under exposed the picture by 3 stops down. Now I took your advice, now the screen will show exactly what the final image will look like. I turned off live boost. Why would you need the live boost on when you know it won't be the same as the screen? I just wanted the live screen to reflect on what changes I had with ISO, shutter and aperture. I was shooting in manual. I do a lot of astrophotography, and I find that this live view on1 or on2 as misleading. I want to see exactly what I will get for a final picture. No surprises! Thank you so much for all of your educational videos, and that teaches me the fundamentals of Olympus cameras. I setup the live view options I use default at image, histogram and the level bar. Do I need to do this for the custom 2 settings? I have that one as shadows and highlights. So all seems to be working, under your simple instructions. Thank you for that video too! Just one other question. Sometimes in the live view, the info toggle goes to a pick a choose list from the camera. Like STD and something else. I had to power on/off to get it to a histogram or regular or shadows and highlights. What can cause that to happen? I'm baffle abut that! Sometimes I have to turn off the camera from the scope and go inside the house to get this custom1 or 2 to work consistently. Is it something I did wrong here? Thank you for these great videos. You're the best in Olympus and OM Systems! Your videos are so much better than reading an instruction manual! Thanks, RJ

Hi. The live view boost is to help compose the scene when it's very dark so you can see what's in the frame. Once you compose the shot, you can turn off boost. For your other questions, I need to know which camera you have so I can try and diagnose the problem. Please post as a new comment so I will be sure to see it. Thanks.

Hi Rob…question from a newbie…what setting do you use for dpi? Can you explain the impact of the various levels of dpi settings?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 8 ай бұрын
You can ignore the dpi setting. It's there for informational purposes for printing. It has no impact on the resolution or quality of your images. If you do want to print, most printing shops ignore this setting as well. If you do ever need it, it's kind of the thing you would know you need.

Hi Rob...I have not used my E-M5 II in awhile and I am scratching my head. I want to change the focus point size. I use the SCP and choose the focus points and it shows the small point and I want to change it to the cross or maybe full coverage. On my Five3 I would use the front wheel but no matter which wheel I turn it only wants to move the point around...same with the direction pad on the back. What am I missing here. What other setting might I have made to not allow the size change? Thanks again for all your help Joe McGrath

Magic man....How did you figure out that problem....anyway I have a different problem and I am sure my age enters into the picture. Episode 423 is one of the best and important videos you have ever made. Custom modes and custom buttons. I am good with having setup C1...2...and 3. Now I want to assign those modes to buttons as you did in the video and I have failed. I have watched the video many times but i am too slow or you could slow down a bit so that I can complete the process. As the commenter wanted to do I would like to use buttons to switch between custom modes. I can of course do it now with the mode dial but the buttons would be easier and of course quicker. So Rob, just the instructions about assigning the buttons to be able to switch from C1 to C2 etc. Thank you again for all your investigation into what is an amazing camera. Joe McGrath

With a little practice you can learn to hold and operate the camera with your left hand in "portrait mode". You can change the format to 1:1 (square format) or 3:4 , both of which will use less of the sensor area for jpegs, but may help you compose your images when holding the camera in this fashion. Using a neck strap may help you support the camera when making adjustments using the buttons and dials between shots.

I have the AEL lever set up for position 1 to be single focus point and position 2 to be all focus points. I have had a problem when switching from position 2 to position 1 and back again the OM-1 sometimes will not focus. I powered the unit off and removed the lens and then put the lens back on but still could not focus on anything. I finally switched from 2 to 1 and tried to focus and it worked, so then I switched to position 2 and it worked. Any one else seen this problem? Sorry did not know where else to post this.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek Жыл бұрын
I've not run into this problem. You could report this to OM Systems as a bug, but it would be best if you could consistently repeat the error. The only two things I can think of is see if this is happening with a specific lens or all lenses. Also double check you have the latest firmware for both lens and camera.

Hi Rob: please keep up the great vids, they are the best on the scene! Here's a different question. In the "Import from Camera" panel of OM Workspace, the two memory cards have an identical card-name ("OM-1"). Can different names be assigned to differenciate them? On my OM-1, both cards have an "OM SYSTEM" USB drive name in the Windows file manager dialog for THIS PC. Would a good old File/drive rename do the trick? I tested with an old mark III -- and found out that when the USB drive name is empty in the drive properties, OM Workspace substitutes the camera model (e.g. E-M1MarkIII, in this case). I renamed my drive to "MIII_A" - a change that is now "permanent" (e.g. sticks across power off/on, reconnect). Yet, OM Workspace ignores it and still designates the drive by the camera model (E-M1MarkIII). I didn't go further with the OM-1 camera.
