I've been an Olympus video shooter the last two years and have some thoughts about the OM System's newest camera release: OM-1

Nobody talks about that but glad it’s fixed. I’d like to get one to try out but I don’t know if I would pay full price for the OM-1. It’s a little pricey and you can get an a7 IV for not much more

As far as I remember you had E-M1 mark 3 and wanted to get rid off it, bacause you were not using all the features or something. So now you're upgrading once again? :D

@@edgardodj Hey!!!! Good to see you, bud! Yes, I got rid of the E-m1 mark III because I wasn't using some of those features. Namely, ProRes RAW, Live ND, and Handheld HIGH RES. These were the only real bump over the E-m1 Mark II and I simply don't use them very much. (Admittedly I do miss Live ND now though) The OM-1, however, is FASTER by quite a bit compared to the E-m1 mark II. I do use Tripod High Res every week and it now processes that in less than half the time. It also processes Live Comp in less than half the time. This will cut my work load severely! What reviewers don't say is when you're using High Res and there are more details in the background or you're using it with flash it can potentially take a few seconds longer. Some have even taken me 23-25 seconds. A few seconds do not seem like a lot but when you're going from painting to painting the seconds add up. And the OM-1 also has at does 25fps with AF/AE (50fps with PRO lenses) which is a big deal for me as someone that shoots skaters and surfers during the summer months. I've gotten good with what I have, but there are a lot of potentially better shots that I did miss during my tenure with the Mark II. The last thing is the OM-1 now has over 1000 Cross Quad Pixel AF points! This was the BIGGEST selling point for me! The E-M1 Mark III is definitely not worth the upgrade. The OM-1 is the definite upgrade I've been waiting for...OR IS IT! lol We shall see if it's worth it to me in a few months.

that video of yours about you switching to em1ii was quite nice. it convinced me (actually, the colors you showed coming from the natural and flat profile) to buy an olympus, when "opportunity" arrised. i hear they finally put zebras in om1.

Great Overview. I use the highly under rated Panasonic G9. How I wish it had better autofocus but other than that and the recoed limit it is a video beast! Even 6k/30!

Olympus / OM found a real niche with birders and general wildlife photographers. I use my E-M1 II for birds, and the Bird Detect AI autofocus would be a welcome improvement. I'm just thrilled that there's a Micro Four Thirds camera that shoots 10-bit and 4K 60p with phase-detect autofocus. Maybe I'll get one someday after the next big thing comes out. For now, my E-M1 Mark II works just fine, and I have no plans to replace it anytime soon.

I don't get one thing, everyone is complaining about the HDMI port, but why camera makers and the other companies are not using the USB-C port for this? One size and standard, high bandwidth, it can transfer power also, why we are stuck to this HMDI port?

I think Olympus colour beats the extra resolution of the GH6 and at the end of the day what good is a bit more resolution if its out of focus. For gimbal use Olympus autofocus is awesome.

@@davidaltizer I was lucky enough to get mine yesterday and absolutely love it already. Wrapping my head around the new menus etc. But the autofocus really is stunning. Took my dog to the beach and even in low light dusk after the sun went down the camera still stayed on the dogs face as he ran at me. Didn't miss focus in a single shot of the bursts.

Also the viewfinder is so sharp and detailed you won't believe it. Anyone considering a GH6 really should compare viewfinders first.

OM-1 4k 10 bit will be available only shooting in OMlog - which is terrible to grade.

The camera does not clip the files, but I believe you need to have an SDXC card. The longest time you can record in one file is about 3hrs.

The OM-1 is only 77Mbps in 4k30. That's even lower.

@@davidaltizer Yeah. It's quite a downer for me. The Fujifilm X-T4 is doing up to 400Mbps. 77Mbps is even lower than the old Sony 8 bit videos at 100Mbps, so I'm not sure how much the 10bit in 77Mbps really holds up. 10x more data in a smaller format... idk. Hopefully you can get one for testing.

Only testing will tell but h.265 is incredibly efficient. That may have something to do with it. Does your Xt4 do 400mbps in h.265?
