This is a short video taken over two days at the Welney Wildlife and Wetland Trust Reserve in Cambridgeshire. The two days showed markedly different lighting, - the first day in bright sunlight ,and the second day in thick fog. All images, as well as the slow motion video, were taken with the Om1 and the 150-400mm lens.

It's amazing how many keepers you got on that first day. It's indicative of how far things have come. You managed to show in one day what a few decades ago would be considered a career portfolio for a dedicated nature photographer. Also fun to see how good Olympus gear really has become. And of course more than anything it shows how wonderful of a photographer you are Roger! Thank you for the video and looking forward to watching more and more content from you.

Thank you for the very kind comment Jeremiah. It really is appreciated. Its amazing how much camera gear has improved over the last decade, and Olympus (now OM Systems) gear in particular is second to none. Once again, thanks for the kind words.

Once again a really lovely video. I promise myself every year to go to Welney, yet haven’t managed it in donkeys! A super juxtaposition in contrasting weather, some lovely full light shots but also some very atmospheric images from the foggy Sunday and the last image of the Whoopers is super.

Excellent footage as always Roger. I was a member of the wetlands trust for over 20 years. In the end I withdrew my membership the start at 10 o’clock in the morning for birdwatchers especially in the summer spring is less than enjoyable. The glare on the water makes it a waste of time.

Great shots especially the barn owl. I live about 30 mins from Welney, visit often but never seen the barn owl. I use the 300mm plus 1.4 converter, OM fantastic camera

I think I was just lucky with the Barn Owl. We were just putting the camera bags in the back of the car and it showed up. The warden tells me that it is fairly frequent, but as with a lot of nature photography, its just a case of luck being in the right place at the right time.

The images/footage is great in the sunlight but the foggy conditions do make for some atmospheric images too. Never been to Welney but it is now on my list as I often holiday in Norfolk so it shouldn't be too far away.

A very nice video Roger. I was there a few weeks ago and the basement hide was flooded, I had my wellies on and my shoulder bag was nearly dipping in the water using the lower view port! The close views of the ducks from there are great. Did you see the Short Eared owls that have been around on Lady Fen? Thanks for the heads up on the early opening with breakfast I might give that a go. I think at Slimbridge they allow WWT members in earlier but Welney don’t seem to do so.

Thanks for the very kind comment Bill . I have been before when the basement hide is flooded but this time it was O.K. The `Swans Awake` early opening is definately worth a look. If I go again I will make sure I go then. Its only at weekend. Someone who had booked didnt turn up and because of that they offered me a free fried breakfast. 😀What`s not to like !

Another great video Roger, thank you. Do they still charge and require advance booking for access to the basement hide?
@rogerhance5883
@rogerhance5883 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comment Hedley. They do not charge for use of the basemant hide. You no longer accesss it from inside the main hide. There is a passage at a lower level at the back. This is were I am walking in the video. When I went with my friends there was fortunately plenty of space in the hide, but I guess at times it could get busy.

@@rogerhance5883 Thanks for the info Roger. The charge was, imho, somewhat excessive so I guess they weren’t getting enough takers to make the admin worthwhile. Kind regards, Hedley.

Good video Roger. Given the poor quality of light on one visit do you use Auto ISO on the OM1? If so do you set a maximum limit?
@rogerhance5883
@rogerhance5883 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comment John. I hardly ever use Auto ISO, unless I am shooting video. I much prefer to set the ISO myself. Its just something I have got used to over the years. Although the light on the second day was poor. I did limit the ISO to ISO1600. I think above that it does get a bit noisy in poor lighting conditions. Apart from the Swans taking off, I was mainly taking static shots on that day.

Cracking stuff as usual Roger, must make more of an effort to get out. I like the covering that you had on your 150-400mm, It looks like if makes it warmer to the touch, is that correct?

It is a great lens but as you say Phil, its very expensive. I have been in the past and used the 300mm F4 lens, and had very good results. The 300mm F4 is only a third of the price of the 150-400mm, and its just as sharp.
