Tried it for my company and was shot down, it's reseller only, if you don't have a distributor account with a major supplier (which part 2 of their promo program asks for), you probably won't qualify. Too bad, have over a dozen Unifi APs and was curious how they compared since they seem cheaper.

Transmission Power 5GHz: EAP653 - 22dBm EAP610 - 25dBm EAP670 - 28dBm All have a 5dBi internal omni antenna. Why would they send their least powerful EAP as a demo unit to SMBs? I've tried the EAP610 in my house and signal strength was mediocre. The EAP670 has a much stronger signal and is on par with an ASUS RT-AX88U with external antennas. It's also a huge saucer! Low power access points are useful in deployments where each AP serves a small but client dense area. One can then use overlapping channels with less interference between APs. Maybe that was the intent but in that case they'd need much more than two APs?
@SPXLabs
@SPXLabs 8 ай бұрын
I don't know why. My best guess was different. I thought it was because it's their smallest design and thus cheaper to ship. If they send out the massive saucers it could get expensive fast. But again, I don't really know.

Does the EAP653 really requrie POE+? I've been running a 653 with standard a standard POE switch for a while now. Am I underpowering my 653?
@Doppelhorn
@Doppelhorn 8 ай бұрын
It depends - the maximum power consumption according to specifications is 13.98 W for the US version of the EAP653. While 802.3af PoE can supply a maximum of 15.4 W under ideal conditions, only 12.95 W are guaranteed e.g. as when a very long cable is used. I would therefore only use this switch with relatively short cables to avoid an excessive voltage drop.
@AsadMulla
@AsadMulla 8 ай бұрын
Nope. It only needs about 8w. I had an issue with them where the ap was only asking the switch for 7w so the switch limited the power to 7w. When the Ap wanted more than 7w and didn't get it, it would reboot. It happend every few minutes. I had them sitting around for about 1.5 years until I found I can manually change the Poe max power per port. Set it to 30w and it now works fine. I can see it using about 8w normally

Thanks SPX, nice heads up, and perfect timing! I was a Unifi early adopter years ago and just yesterday decided to give Omada a try, to use in our MSP business. This was after I noticed the latest Unifi switches were either annoyingly under-featured or crazy overpriced. And their support can't get any worse. Omada APs surprisingly don't include a drop ceiling T-Bar rail mount though. But since we can use Unifi pro mounts, it's not a deal breaker. That demo price is worth it for the switch and 2 eap's alone. 🙂

With a 605 i was able to do some pretty sweat group rules and forwarding with dual wan, to allow my brother to play games always via dsl (low lat) isp and all other traffic via starlink. Do you know if SDN allows this easily? Was thinking about getting it to allow fast roaming (seamless) As he has 2 internal APs and 3 external (i used outdoor AP and sector antenna to beam that all over his property). But the AP switching feels bad and you lose signal first. Any idea?

I wouldn‘t call the Omada system a „copy“. While it serves a similar purpose (central management of a WLAN system) like competing systems such as Unifi, it is by no means a kind of „clone“. I am only vaguely familiar with Unifi, but I Omada can be a viable alternative especially if there are budget constraints. The TP-Link system can function completely independent of any „cloud“ account and registration, which may be considered an advantage in certain environments.
@AsadMulla
@AsadMulla 8 ай бұрын
Also, TP Link has been adding features to Omada and Unifi have been removing. I've been using Omada for about 5 years now. They are definitely similar but I wouodnt say it's a copy. Maybe they built it together. You can say Huawei is a clone of Cisco.
