it should be noted that the army which kidnapped them was composed mainly of European mercenaries and some African trackers who were forced to engage with European slavers, otherwise they were either exterminated or sold into slavery as well and allmost of all free men kidnapped in West Africa were very cultured and proud Muslims. but when they were reduced to slavery in America they were Christianized with force and violence or else exchanged their Christianization with their freeings. so sad and unfair that the black American community has been forced to forget these roots.

Those wondering bout this psuedo-conversion thing, allow me to explain. Unlike Christianity or Judaism, in Islam one is allowed to pretend to convert to another religion when threatened to preserve their life, so long as inwardly they continue to truly believe. Many Muslim slaves had to pretend to convert to Christianity to placate their masters. The man including Quranic verses in his biography seems to show he was still a Muslim but had only pretended to convert as many other slaves did. obviously, when it comes to dead people we can never really know and there is, of course, a chance he did genuinely decide to become Christain.

The Zanj Rebellion (Arabic: ثورة الزنج Thawrat al-Zanj / Zinj) was a major revolt against the Abbasid Caliphate, which took place from 869 until 883. Begun near the city of Basra in present-day southern Iraq and led by one Ali ibn Muhammad, the insurrection involved enslaved Bantu-speaking people (Zanj) who had originally been captured from the coast of East Africa and transported to the Middle East, principally to drain the region's salt marshes. It grew to involve slaves and freemen, including both blacks and Arabs, from several regions of the Caliphate, and claimed tens of thousands of lives before it was finally defeated.

The African continent including West Africa was exposed to civilisation well before the European slave trade. The assumptions that black people and people of ethnicity were uncivilised was wrong from the beginning to justify European colonialism and forced religious indoctrination. For hundreds of years, the European and Western narratives of Africans and people of ethnicities was that we were uncivilised and uncultured. I am surprised that Western Scholars studying civilisations on the Continent of Africa including the Middle East assumed that Africans were uncultured and uncivilised, that is a shame to the thousands of faculties given to study of that region of the world. Did they not consider that Africans would have come in contact with cultures and civilisations on their continent including religion? Thank you to Omar ibn Said for amplifying and changing their narrative of us. (Papua New Guinea).

That is not Islamic teaching whatsoever. You should call It what "muslims" do instead of what "Islam" do
@monamalek113 жыл бұрын
there is no "islamic slave trade", Slave trade in arabia started waaay before Islam. And when Islam came, Muslims started buying slaves and freeing them. In fact, The first person to ever say the azan (Bilal) is an African slave that Prophet Muhammed freed.

Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, owned slaves, took slaves, traded in slaves and sold them. He did free some but also criticized his wife Aisha for freeing a slave. Whatever Muhammad did is seen as a good example to follow. So islam cannot permanently end slavery as they cannot criticize Muhammad who is in effect the one they follow as Allah is more or less unknowable.

This story ignores the fact of slavery being at the very heart of Islam and its expansion. Here you see people waxing over the moral superiority of a religion when its cultures and its empires built on slave soldiers and slave workers. You can rest assured that this guy himself and the people of the environment in which he lived before his capture owned slaves themselves, and some probably traded in them. Total Muslim denial.

You say the heart of Islam? Arabs had slaves before Islam so how was it the heart of Islam? Why don't we see letters from these slaves saying they were forced to be Muslims? They only seem to speak about the European slavery. And no one seems to mention Bilal we know he was a slave from Abyssinia and Abu Bakr bought him and freed him. He was tortured by his master all because he wouldn't give up Islam. We know Arabs were pagans and worshipped Idols before Islam came so the enslaving anyone had nothing to do with Islam.

The irony is his Arabic name...the Arabian/Muslim slave trade existed way before the atlantic one. Most male african slaves were made into eunuchs. He went from one master to another...

Do the math. 10 to 12 million people transported to a place in boats that could only hold 200 people at a time? That would take 50,000 to 60,000 successful trips. Yet, no one has ever seen the relic, trace, or wreckage of an actual slave ship. If this is true, How can that be?

@ilmaazmol66983 жыл бұрын
If you mean the Ottoman Empire (Muslim rulers) than yes, they had taken young Christian men by the name of Janissaries to serve their nation. But instead of taking snippets, you should learn of the moral ways they were treated; they were not even “encouraged” to convert, and were praised highly, taking elite positions under the sultan. Consequently, our kindness had allowed those Janissaries to tear down the Ottoman Empire and seize control.

There was a very specific reason why Slave owners did not allow their slaves to practice their original religion or to speak their native tongue... And this was why. slavery is a big chapter in african history, source of income & prosperity for rulling tribes. ironically, muslim arabs-african were a big player in this slave trade in africa. it is a history that most muslim today are so embarassed to admitted that they try to deny it or forget about it.
@lylecrawford27948 ай бұрын
It is still widely practiced in the Muslim world today, and I have heard many Imams still talking about seizing other people's lands today. The lack of self reflection is astounding. Many Europeans died fighting to _end_ slavery, the Muslims never apologised for enslaving Europeans during the Barbary slave trade, but we are constantly reminded of bad things our ancestors did. Their own prophet was a slave owner.
