I grew up in So. Cal, and lived in SD for a while. As a kid in the 60s we played over the line all the time, but we never pitched liked that. Usually our Batter would toss the ball up in the air and hit it or, we had one our players on the mound who pitched to our batter.

This looks ridiculously dangerous

That looks fun, but also incredibly dangerous. The person tossing the ball is liable to lose some teeth or worse.

I know of at least one occasion back in the day (70's) where the "pitcher" put his hand in the swing zone and came out with some broken fingers. It was ugly.
@jeffalbritton31544 жыл бұрын
it can happen, but its rare. I've played for 15+ years. Over the course of the BIG tournament (two weekends) in July thousands of games are played and very few incidents happen. It's a great game and a ton of fun!!

This actually looks boring lol, when we play the pitcher is standing 15 feet away and it's like 6vs6 or 7vs7, with a softball, and mits
@jeffalbritton31543 жыл бұрын
It’s super fun with just 3 players...you can get into a better hitting rhythm. With the pitcher being so close to us it allows us to have greater control of the ball flight & path. Plus the court is only 50’ wide. If we wore gloves it would be too easy on defense
@coleparker2 жыл бұрын
We did the same thing when I was a kid. However, we usually played with a baseball and gloves. Funny thing is that sometimes we only had one ball and when that one got frayed and worn if we did not have any money, we repaired it with electrician tape. Same thing if the bat got cracked, since there were no aluminum ones at that time.

Looks like the game is heavily weighted toward the offense. Just keeping hitting those golf driver shots just over the line. Piece a cake.
@jeffalbritton31544 жыл бұрын
A good offense is the best defense in this game...your right low golf style shots are the best, but to consistently hitting the ball just over the line is the hard part...harder than it looks. These players in this video are best at this game.

The game originated as a way 5-6-7 kids could go out and practice defense. 'Hot box'. Don't know why gloves are banned here.

@@mitchyoung93 this game started on the beaches of San Diego 60+years ago...as volleyball players were bored waiting for the next game the created this game “OTL” that is San Diego’s oldest sport

@@mitchyoung93 professional OTL is a man’s game, my grandpa kept a bag on him just in case he needed to tape up anyones busted fingers, I’d love to play as it’s like a San Diego tradition but I don’t have vision in my left eye so my one good eye won’t be fast enough to see the ball fly well

Too much music and way too loud. I was hoping to get to see some play and conversations, not just clips of hits and your favorite music. RichE San Diego
