Thank God for guys like you who pass this knowledge on . I've got a 57 Big Twin 35 that is finally going to get some TLC. Have a 14 foot Mark Twain runabout she used to push, but I ran it all hard, put it away wet, and didn't know how to take care of it. Last two cruises were a disaster and my wife to be was not impressed. Lol. Been at least 13 years since she ran. I want to go through the whole thing and make her trustworthy again. Now I'll share those good times with my kids.

Worked for me. I think first and foremost you convinced me to clean all the parts. I was being lazy. Threads on mine were stripped, I was able to drill out, press in a carriage head from the top and use a nylock nut to pull it all together. Your assembly instructions made my day.

Thank you SO MUCH for making this video! I broke the starter cord on my '99 25hp Johnson and while I know a lot about cars, I know nothing about boat motors. This video was a life saver and got me back up and running in no time. Thank you again - this was amazing!

Thanks so much for this excellent how-to video, I was able to refit my spring on a unit exactly like yours here, with no snags or foulups. And when I refit it all as you instructed, having relubed it, all was OK. Interesting thing-you are using a Lubriplate grease here, the manager of the refinery that makes Lubriplate greases used to live right next door to me!

+Kiggsia, Glad you got it back together, I use several Lubriplate products. One of many oldtimers I was mentored by told me to always put a 1/4 cup or so of Lubriplate 105 in all of the old style Evinrude / Johnson gear boxes. I do to this day. kodi

Good video. When you put the rope in it should go behind the pin that drops through beside the knot hole. Makes it so when you pull to the end of the rope you don't pull directly on the knot.

Could this be installed on an 1987 Evinrude 15HP that gas the weird spiral gear pull start setup on the front center side area of the engine. All it does is it engages with the flywheel from underneath the flywheel with the oem black plastic gear! My ‘69 johnson 9.9HP has a pull start setup good enough for double the cylinders inside. Very well made. The Evinrude setup leaves a lot to be desired. Had i known I would of got a different model honestly...

@kodibass I have the same starter and the Pawls broke off and the pawl-to-friction plate links (wire springy things) are destroyed. I bought new pawls, links and friction plate. How far do I need to tear it down for just these pieces? Do I have to release the spring?

This is an awesome tutorial, do you have any sources for the parts? In particular the Starter Assembly for a 1997 25hp Johnson P/N J25REUM. The one I need parts for is just like yours with two starter pawls, all I can find are ones with only a single pawl...

Awesome video kodi! Regarding the plastic square plastic friction plate that the pawl springs connect to...I have to wait over a week for one to arrive via mail but want to get back on the water soon. Any “hacks” on making one myself using a piece of plastic? If so, what kind of plastic would you recommend? I was thinking perhaps a piece of a thick container like a washing machine detergent jug? I would cut out the center hole and put a tiny hole in each corner for the pawl springs to connect to...wanted to get on the water tomorrow
@kodibassInsideoutboards
@kodibassInsideoutboards 6 жыл бұрын
+Billy Hubbard, I think this could be done for sure, any good , milk, bleach, anti-freeze jug along that line would get ya there, you can always do the rope rapped around the flywheel & pull like king Kong thing. kodi
@Hubbardbilly
@Hubbardbilly 6 жыл бұрын
kodibass Thanks! I ended up using a thick plastic container and cut a “close enough” shape. The original one was melted and deformed so I had to do a best-guess. It worked great! I was able to get the boat started. Couldn’t have done it without this video! One other question - do you have measurements on the OEM bolts to mount the pull start? The previous owner clearly replaced them and they’re not sized properly.

@kodibassInsideoutboards
@kodibassInsideoutboards 6 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Wise, Yes , pull the cord out until it is as far as it can go, this loads the spring.. take a pair of locking pliers and hold in that position or use a screwdriver as in above video. cut the not and pull old cord out. Feed new cord in the disc hole and guide through the handle slot tie not at disc, feed cord through handle tie a knot or use the omc clip if available, very slowly remove screwdriver/locking pliers and let spring load ease cord back in , hold cord and slowly let spring draw in cord. kodi

tanks , I also have a jhonson 25 year 1973, and he has the problem that the recoil start hits when he throws and hits when he returns, I already check the trigger, and if he hits but I can't solve this matter, can you help me? I even bought a new trigger, I already maintained the dish as you did in one of your videos, but keep hitting, I take the spark plugs out of the engine and it works very well and it doesn't hit, but I put the spark plugs on it and I throw back and hit new coming and going. Thanks for your attention. greetings and blessings.

@@MinisteroAntioquia , Check the washer on the bolt that comes up from underneath and has the nut on the very top. Sometimes the washer does not lay flat in the bolt hole, which lets the trigger hit the flywheel ramps. kodi
