Damn, fellas....Insult my mother, but leave my boy Omega Red alone! How you gonna hate on a cold-war era Soviet super soldier?? But yeah, he did get that Nathan Jones push that went nowhere.

I can't say if Omega Red blows or not because anything by Jim Lee from this period overrides any critical faculties I have. I just instantly fanboy over his work. I was 13 when I saw him turn into Jim Fucking Lee thru his PWJ run. I still love it.

These first few Jim Lee issues got the sales and attention, and are still remembered today. But I much prefer the art and storytelling for the Bishop’s Crossing storyline that was going on at the same time, in Uncanny X-Men.

Claremont was checked out before X-Men 1 launched. The Xtinction Agenda is basically the last story he controls. After that, Jim Lee gets co-plot credits and pushes the direction it goes. The last Uncanny issues before the new title are credited to Fabian Niceiza and not Claremont at all, even though he had been building to a Shadow King story for more than a year. Re-reading the late 80s X-Men you can really see when the plots gets weaker and things feel rushed, as Claremont gets shoved aside.

I got my mom to order me the Erik Larson Spider-Man t-shirt with the city photo background. She wouldn't let me get the Ghost Rider one. She said it was too gory.

Issue 6 of this run (same storyline) is the first american comic I ever read. I didn't understand a single thing about the plot (I assumed Wolverine was a robot) but the artwork looked incredibly exciting to 7 year old me. Especially when compared to the european comics I was used to at that time. It's not exactly a classic but I still have a fondness for it.

80-90s marvel t shirts are going for shockingly serious money on eBay, like from 100 to 3000 bucks per t shirt. I suppose they are considered to be cool vintage fashion items now.

OMG Ed!! When you were talking about referencing the interior of Charles Xavier's mansion, I instantly thought I would screen grab some "Dark Shadows". So when you echoed my thought almost immediately, that got me wondering, in the same way that Maddie Pryor and parts of the hellfire club were inspired by the band - Steeleye Span, did Dark Shadows influence both the art direction of the Mansion and even some of the gothic soap style of what Chris Clermont was writing? As a creator I find that fascinating! I love, love, love your channel thank you both for everything you do! I have ADHD and I listen to this while I draw, which helps me focus, so thank you

It's interesting to examine Gambit in the 90s. After Claremont was forced out, Gambit turned into a sleazy Pepe Le Pew knockoff, but he was much cooler under Claremont. I would love to know what his plans for the character were.
@basscot17
@basscot17 4 ай бұрын
Gambit was supposed to be the manifestation of a hero imagined by a kid, who never grew up. Mr Sinister in return was supposed to be the manifestation of evil imagined by the same kid. The kid was Nathan, the boy who bullied Cyclops in the orphanage. None of this ever went anywhere, after Claremont left

I got the Wolverine Omnibus 3 since the art looked good and the price was right. It's interesting how much better the layout is. The Dream part of this issue is a double-page spread that reads so much better. Especially with that "No!" at the end before the page turn. I love the basketball since it felt like storytelling. I say that since in Hush it felt like the motions. There is no playing with panels or pacing. It's by the numbers. Really love this part.

Other than the X-Men Classics at the newstands and their appearance un Spiderman & his Amazing friends, this was the comic that introduced me to the modern X-Men and I understood exactly what they were about in their superhero identity and in their everyday lives. I hung around until Zero Tolerance on the strength of this first impression.

Just wanted to add in on those Ghost Rider shirts. I very recently owned and sold both of those. First off, the maxi print was one of the ugliest shirts I've ever owned. Was happy to sell it for $1600. Second is the other image was a Ron Wagner and it was on a sweatshirt. Those shirts were the jam in the 90's though.

I'd given up Xmen by this time. I was 16, I'd found the nearest comic store in the nearest city and I'd found cerebus the aardvark and love and rockets. suddenly superheroes were pointless. I never went back to superheroes, but I found more non-superhero comix like Hate andMilk and cheese. If you don;t give up superheroes by the time you're 18 then frankly I think you're a bit pathetic.
