day omega takes care of its proportions, it will be a game changer. by proportions i dont mean diameter of the watch. lugwidth, subdial sizes and position etc. accuracy sells but not as much as aesthetics

Compered to some popular watch movements it could be a game changer for sure. Not for the likes of the modern Rolex superlative movements though where we can expect no more than -2 Sec/day..I don’t think we mind the +2 or perhaps more though…much easier to set a movement that’s running slightly fast..

This is an incredible feat, that almost equals, the also incredible engineering of Grand Seiko Spring Drive accuracy. But to do it in a balance bridge movement 🤯 I don’t think anyone could have imagined this kind of accuracy before the silicone hairspring was introduced in the Ulysse Nardin Freak. This is an awesome achievement for all mechanical watch enthusiasts to enjoy better and better watches going forward. Chapeau to Omega 👍🏻

It’s a great point regarding the actual time keeping element of a watch. Omega have been pushing horological boundaries for ever. For this reasons alone, I perceive them to be better than their competitors. They are in my option, the best watch brand out there. I love JLC and Vacheron, but they play at a different price point. Omega are killing it! 👌

I like the styling more than you - think the racing cues are well done. The Speedmaster is a lot like the Porsche 911; way ahead of its time and now being very incrementally updated. Impressed that they could come up with such a simple system to improve the accuracy. Time will tell how effective it truly is.

Some people forget Seiko achieved this accuracy in the late 70s. The Seiko VFA was truely a marvel. (Doesnt take away from Omega's achievements tho!) Always love when a company tries to push the limits of mechanical timekeeping.

Love the Italicised date font on the 10 only . Nice OSC “ service and maintenance “ tie in with the Key . As we know the 42mm Speedy measurement includes the pushers so this 44.25 will wear correspondingly smaller . However… you are correct… it should have been in the DSOTM style ;)

I believe the objective of this new "Spirate" system was to extend their patent on the silicon hair spring which was due to expire.

It would be a new patent on the spirate system itself rather than the current silicon hairspring. So other companies could replicate the old execution but not the new system.

Great question, is this even necessary.. short answer is no. But then again neither is being able to withstand 15000 gauss or a co-axial escapement or even a tourbillion, but we all want them as they are signs of a watchmakers expertise of their craft. Great content as always. Cheers!

The difference between -2/+2 and 0/+2 is a lot more than it sounds! When a watch runs fast you can set it by hacking the seconds, so you _will_ set it. All of my watches run slow so to set them is quite a chore and I only do it every few weeks. Mine usually drift out by a minute or more before I reset them, but one that runs fast will always be close to correct.

It's great that someone innovates. Lately, all we get is just the face, but no heart. Watches became Instagram in a nutshell. No one cares what a person thinks as long as they look good. But watches are machines first and foremost, the internals should be a priority, not just a new dial colour..... Bravo to Omega, bravo to Seiko with the 9SA5. These should be important, and not that something is blue.

I'd say it's super impressive. For a mass-produced mechanical watch on a largely automated assembly line, +2sec/d is remarkable. For me, the Swiss have been too complacent when it comes to movement technology and enthusiasts too eager to swallow the 'quartz is more accurate' shrug. Well, it seems a bit of R&D, the threat of a patent running out and an arms race with a certain competitor can move things on quite a bit. Props to Omega and Grand Seiko for shaking things up. More interesting watches to house the movement will follow...

Watch keeping or time making this is interesting news indeed. For a long time two of the best known watch brands have been battling to be the best at something. We need this to drive things forward. Omega have to be proud at what has been achieved here. We'll have to see what the others do to match or better it. I have to agree with you though about the watch launch, while I really like it there is that something missing from the aesthetic point of view. Hopefully we'll see this technology flow into the more 'affordable' models. I'd certainly like to see it in watches that house the 88XX and 89XX movements covering the Seamaster and Constellation (ideally a new Globemeaster Pie Pan dial?). I guess this will take time as by launching one model Omega can glean feedback on a smaller volume run and implement any tweaks prior to updating the other movements. Very rarely are new movements perfect so I'll wait a while before looking. In the mean time enjoy your time travel, it's not rocket surgery or brain travel.

Speak for yourself on being spoiled or deflated about this release. They’re now making the most accurate mechanical movement ever. That’s quite a feat in itself. Omega are making great strides as always. The silicone hairspring is now being used by other watch brands following their successes. I see this as no different. Hey IDGuy, quick clarification on a comment within the video. METAS is 0 to +5, not -2 to +2 a day (that's Rolex). However, all that being said, what's really wonderful about this release isn't the aesthetics of the watch ... if you remember the Aqua Terra bumblebee wasn't a looker - at least from the standpoint of the other watches Omega was releasing ... BUT, that movement adjustment mechanism is actually really wonderfully important since what it allows is not only extreme accuracy - which is the reason way Quartz took off and became the mechanical watch killer ... it also allows for simple adjustments within a boutique. This is as important as the silicon hairspring development ... if not more ...

@IDGuy You have raised valid points. There is no perfect watch one size fit all out there. We have all said that. The balance between quality, specification and performance needs to be maintained. Losing sight of that from a manufacturer and consumer makes matter skewiff. Omega bring a lot to The Table. Movement METAS + COSC, Double barrel, silicon balance springs, craftsmanship and utilitarianism. There will always be room for critical thinking on what they bring out next. The same with Tudor. Knowing the demands of the consumer will always be the key. Listening to customers will continue to reach greater heights. Grand Seiko have done this with their Evolution 9 series 9rA2 movements. What all this does is close the gap with Rolex. Something we have wanted to see for a long time! Price with value for money is where it is all heading; more bang for your buck as they say here in the USA. Keep on doing what you are doing as you have opened up debates with your videos that most other reviewers do not seem to do!

I’m extremely curious to see how accurate these watches will be when they leave the factory. I for one tend to obsess over this…if my submariner is running a few seconds ahead I have to stop the seconds hand every few days to get it back on track 🤣🤣 my fxd and seamster 300 tend to be my most accurate watches…gmt pretty damn good also but my sub pisses me off every few days running couple seniors fast..I do like the subtle details on this new speedmaster…the tribute to the anniversary of the aqua terra with the “10” and the running seconds…also think the “grand feu” bezel looks amazing in closeups!!!

The tech is interesting of course, but will the cost mark-up equate to wider adoption and application? Requiring a proprietary key tool to regulate does risk making this a time-keeping cul-de-sac. Then again other watch makers might be prompted to devise something even better.

how much accuracy is necessary when you can reference an atomic clock? If you need the timing for something critical a quartz movement is always attainable. The knowledge of the mechanical superiority is one of the luxuries of a premium purchase. It's still an amazing feat. If the Super Racing keeps potential and repeat customers excited and serves as a sort of "Halo movement/watch" role to attract eyes to the rest of the product line I think it will have more than served its purpose.

For me the only downside of the Apollo 8 was its readability. It takes a second or two to read the hands and tell the time. This one just pops. It’s simple and elegant at the same time. With the yellow and black colors making it exciting for me. Can’t wait to see it in person. But the all white coming out may be the bomb. Which one to get ? I can never decide 😂

Otherwise I keep looking at Brands like Omega, and try to love them, But they just don't do it for me. 120 plus models of the speedmaster.... But that's just me, we are spoilt to have so many great watches overall.

This is one of the reasons why I appreciate Omega. I believe they make the best movements in their price bracket for longevity and accuracy. This very much influences my mind when making a purchase and is why I own a speedmaster racing with the coaxial 9900 movement, double spring barrels and 54 jewels. It’s an absolute beast under the hood. You’re right though, none of this is necessary, but we are dealing with luxury products. It’s not necessary to make increasingly fast cars but we still strive to go faster and we still love to see it. Roger Smith, arguably one of the best watchmakers in the world, spends his life on perfecting his watches to make them the most reliable accurate watches he can. In summary Boykie, I don’t think this is a gimmick but a natural progression in the luxury watchmaking world. And I love it. But you’re dead right about the watch itself. It’s butt ugly and pretty boring. If I want a pretty watch I’ll get a Cartier. If I want a mechanical watch that performs incredibly I’ll get an omega or perhaps one day a Lange. Sorry for the long comment but really enjoyed this video.

I've actually come across people in comments under other videos on this new Speedmaster SuperRacing, claiming that it _"lacks_ _soul"_ because Spirate has allowed a fully mechanical movement to become, _"too_ _accurate"._ As if purely mechanical horology needs to stop at some point to leave in a degree of tangible fallibility. I think this is silly. What's more, at +2 seconds per day worst case, that's still around a minute fast per month in the worst case, unmanaged. Plenty of reason to hack your watch once per week or otherwise manage it's timekeeping with strategic positional placement on your bedside table before you go to bed each night.

From italics to the mesh (gives you that car grill feel) Here I'm thinking if they used an accent colour behind the black mesh (like grey) to bump the contrast? Great review and video again! I agree with you that, given the focus on the new movement and specifically this mechanism, they really should have skeletonized this a dial. I totally agree with this. I think this spirate mechanism will be across the Omega line in future like the coaxial escapement and may ironaically bring over sales to Omega from casual buyers who might worry more about accuracy than most.

METAS is rated at 0 to +5 seconds a day. -2 to +2 seconds a day is Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer standard. So Omegas’s Spirate system 0 to +2 seconds is a noticeable improvement over the standard METAS. Anyway, I think Spirate is an interesting innovation (didn’t Grand Seiko do something similar with their latest High-Beat movement found in the Evolution 9 range though?) but I agree with you in that this particular watch is a little underwhelming 🤷‍♂️

I like this version (and LOVE the typeface used for the date) but strongly agreed that they should have pushed the design further; if Omega want us to believe this tech is ushering in a new era of precision timekeeping, why debut it in an incremental evolution of a 60-year-old design? Even if they (inevitably) upgrade the classic Speedmaster with this new movement, they could have taken this opportunity to debut an entirely modern, 21st-century Speedmaster (or, gasp, introduce a new model) to showcase this milestone. Omega used to be a design innovator and leader, and it's disheartening to see their catalog reduced to reissues and evolutions of half-century (or older) designs.

What about value? The Apollo 8 has a much more expensive ceramic case, more detailed finishing arguably to both movement and dial and is £1500 cheaper. It’s a much more expensive watch for less money based on a spring and it’s accuracy. The tech is amazing but if it goes in the Moonwatch for example it will be upwards of approx £9k based on this. Look how much Omega jacked up the price from the around 3 to 3.5k moonwatch on the last model to th current one at around £6k. The tech is truly amazing and Omega deserve a lot of credit for some of the watches they are making lately. But Omega aren’t in the JLC/Breguet/Blancpain category for a reason. They are pushing themselves into a price bracket that sits with these brands and from a marketing perspective I don’t get it. Omega need to stay Omega IMO. This forever upward scaling of prices can’t sustain indefinitely, there will be nobody left to buy the watches. There is a reason Toyota have brands like Lexus, and VW have Audi/Seat/Skoda and so on. They try to aim to their market with each badge. Sometimes they crossover but they have a target market. Omega are pushing themselves to a place where they may not shift as many watches IMHO. I suspect this tech will be reserved for the odd specialist model for enthusiasts, I hope so or we are in for a tough time collecting watches all the more in the future.

The interesting part will be how this spirate technology is introduced into other models, and how much Omega (and other swatch group brands) will charge over the metas models. I agree that the watch is underwhelming. Everyone was expecting a moonwatch and we got an oversized racing with one of those annoying combined hour & minute counters. Too many of those illegible two counter chronographs in the line up.

For example, I was told by omega boutique staff that the sapphire sandwich moon watch will be getting the variable link like the gold speedies but that the hesalite won’t. Will the do this “premium” model game with spirate too?

This is the perfect Speedmaster for them to field test this new technology. Whether or not a Pro family member offers this or not, I don’t care so much. The ‘57 series, I consider that the most Improved watch of ‘22. This Racing series, it doesn’t speak to me. It’s too large for my taste. I stop there. I believe the customer for this series is likely more spec driven. This is a relatively safe place to roll out this technology. If it works, maybe I’d like to see this offered on a Globemaster which I believe could be developed simply by adding a couple other dial colors. It’s the Omega who’s heritage is linked to superb accuracy. There’s the Railmaster, a watch I own. I don’t personally want to see the value of the Railmaster lost, even though I’ve got mine, but I believe that might be a good fit for this technology ti appear next, though maybe not as a good a fit as the Globemaster which I don’t want to see Omega give up on. Last year Omega spoiled us with the likes of the new ‘57, the year is young.

After the “moon swatch” fiasco it would seem the design dept has been busy. I mean a minute repeater ?! And that was what, like 3 days ago? I think my favorite part about omega is the desire to keep the brand moving forward. Sure there will be some misses, but all progress is made outside of your comfort zone.

It's that constant setting and wearing... eventually we give up being accurate 😆 A great point was made that this could've been Omega's sneaky way of renewing their Silicon balance patent. Genius if you ask me! 🥃

I am much simple minded. All I know is that the patent of silicon hair spring is gonna to expire pretty soon. We will able to see more and more amagnetic watches being available in near future. So I think what Omega is doing now is to further explores, or exploits, whatever you call it, this existing technology. So that they can claim they are still the leading game player for some more years.

I'm an accuracy freak myself to the point that if a watch can't be regulated to +1s/day I'll simply sell it, so I welcome this regulating system, however all my ten Rolex run at this rate out of the box, so I think this is a gimmick. As you said great technology wrong watch...

While this is obviously a technological advancement, Omega should be focusing on making an automatic chronograph movement that will result in a watch under 13mm thick, perfecting the designs of their core range, and then having the confidence to slim down the overwhelming number of options available.

Intriguing tech, but to what benefit? I’ve owned multiple Omega Co-Axial watches that have been no more accurate or required less servicing than ‘conventional’ mechanical movements. Sorry to be cynical, but all this does is give Omega an excuse to jack up the RRP and make it harder for an independent watchmaker to service…

To me what's not working is dimensions, I tought that Omega had understood it when they released the last "57" range, but not here. Over 44mm and over 14mm, that's too chunky to me

It is also a quite big watch 44,25 mm and almost 15 mm thick. I am lost in all this Omega releases. With new releases I see changes inside but not so much outside.
