A wealthy family grapples with the sudden loss of Harold, the father and patriarch of the clan. At the reading of the will, however, they discover a strange clause in Harold's legal document: he wants his body to be stuffed and kept on display in the palatial family residence. If the family doesn't agree to these terms, then they get none of their inheritance.
The omnipresence of Harold's body exerts a strange presence as the family grapples with their loss and their unresolved feelings for him. With his dead body as the home's latest "furnishing," each family member comes to terms with Harold's presence in their life as they go through a strangely heightened process of grief.
Writer-director Matt Kazman's short takes the visual grammar of a wealthy family drama, applies an artful, darkly humorous lens upon it and renders a surprisingly meditative and emotionally rich meditation on family, grief and legacy, all while keeping an eye on how the machinations of wealth can affect the dynamics of love and bonding.
Visually, the film will read for many like a darker, more somber Wes Anderson or legendary Japanese director Yasuhiro Ozu, using formal, portrait-like visual compositions to emphasize the grand yet stilted tableaux the family exists within, whether it's the ornate family home or the sumptuous yet claustrophobic interiors.
Both luxurious and chilly, these images emphasize both the stifled atmosphere of the family as a whole, and the chilly formality in how its members relate to one another. To leaven the stiltedness, there's often a dark, deadpan humor in how the scenes are framed, using the vast spaces at the margin of images to hide ironic, humorous flourishes.
The impeccable craftsmanship and visuals emphasize a certain distance and formalism, the emotional territory mined by the film isn't played for dryness or irony. While there's a certain biting humor -- the kids say their father figurine looks like a "rapist," for example -- there's also genuine grappling with mortality, grief and unresolved feelings and regrets.
There's a certain stylized quality to the cast's collective performance, with a deliberate and even mannerist quality to the rhythms of the dialogue and delivery. But there are also precise, specific moments where genuine flickers of regret, sadness and uncertainty shine through, and their muted quality adds to their underlying heartbreak.
Harold's constant presence as a corpse reminds the family he left behind of how absent he was emotionally while he was alive, bringing up sadness and anger at the way Harold failed them as a father and husband, and the way he exerted control over them through his wealth, even in his death. It's this control that is ultimately his final legacy to his family, prompting a kind of unforgettable, hilarious and yet genuine cathartic release.
Despite the initial polish and almost uncanny elegance of its approach to craft, FATHER FIGURINE isn't afraid to go into raw emotional territory -- and indeed, its formalism and dark humor may indeed make such uncomfortable feelings easier to tiptoe into, for its characters and for the audience.
The anger and regret Harold's family feels is muted by the film's formal demands, but it is palpable -- and it's not unlike what many people feel when a family member with whom they have serious baggage passes away. That baggage doesn't go away with their death, of course. Instead, it becomes part of the larger inheritance they leave behind, and part of the process of grief is accepting these complex feelings and allowing space for them to exist and express themselves.
Only then can those they left behind truly move forward, and find an odd sense of wholeness, within themselves and as a family.

It's a weird thing, but by foisting his dead self on his family, the father gives each of them a kind of therapy for his neglect of them in life. Talking to the corpse gives both the kids a chance to express how they felt about their dad, to actually make peace with him, even have a kind of relationship. Talking to the corpse and beating the hell out of it also allows the wife to vent years of repressed anger and frustration. In the beginning, the wife and kids look like zombies. They move and talk like they're as dead as the stuffed dad. By the end, they're all happy and glowing with life and well-being. He may have been a horrible person in life, but he unintentionally gave them the best gift when he died.

Well said. I also think the damage each family member causes to the figure could represent how much anger they feel towards him. The son felt like he was a dog and never had a relationship with him so he broke the jaw, the daughters social life was ruined and no one wanted to come over so she broke his neck, and the wife had years of pent up anger towards him so she beat his face in.

Notice everytime their at the dining room table you can hear every crunch of food and every swallow..representing the silence they have in their lives towards one another. Especially when the daughter says "its nice to have someone to talk to" and she stares into her mother's eyes. Their happier and happier each meal because they finally get to tell their dad how they've felt and the wife gets to express her feelings towards her husband. This is creepy but clever and I love it.

So, in death he did more for them then he did when he was alive. They could talk to him, break his jaw, take his head off or beat the crap out of him, with no fear of jail time. Releasing years of hate and anger then get on with their lives like everyday super wealthy people do. Exactly how was this worded in his last will and testament? Was it mandatory for him to be visible all the time? Take part in daily life routines? Or what? Very interesting, but not surprised because when they have that kind of money, their abnormalities, oddities, eccentricities are considered NORMAL(for them anyway).

My parents have died, my mother about seven years ago and my dad about a year and a half ago. My mom was an angel. She came down with cancer and the chemo changed her personality for the worse. Sometimes I wonder whether she became unpleasant just to make her passing easier on us, so that we wouldn't miss her too much. My dad and I had a very difficult relationship for a long time. We got along much better the last ten years of his life. I was there when he died. While I took both of them for granted while they were alive, I have an intense sense of gratitude to them now that they are gone. No stuffed corpses necessary! That was a great short film, a great story. The message? Money can't buy you love.

I nearly died laughing when the jaw popped off and the boy screamed! Such an eerie, strange and excellent short film. Dad's presence is actually having a somewhat positive effect on them. The kids are opening up in a strange way, more than they do with their mother. Even the mom is revealing her angry feelings. They were all as dead inside as their Stuffed dad. I like how somehow the expressions on the face change very slightly, like when he's looking up at the mom from the bed. He actually looked scared! haha. And they're finally beaming happily at the end. haha.

One of the best and most creative short films I've seen. When he realized his time was short, he started thinking how bad he has been to his family, how his family was affected because of his absence. It was because of this that he started to take interest in stuffing himself like an animal. He recognized each of their revolt and anger. Since, he was old he might have seen so many deaths in his life. He knew how difficult it was going to be for the family, how lifeless they had become-maybe his father was like that too. It was the realization of him nearing his death made him take this decision which worked out pretty well. The wife and children who were emotionless at the beginning started to grieve and let out their emotions (grieving doesn't mean crying). Because he was dead, they could express their themselves openly without causing any complications in the family. So, it worked out pretty well!

Any one think that may be this is exactly his intention when he included this clause? He was aware that he was never home and knew people didnt like him. He was also aware that damages will happen and people would talk to his dead stuffed body, thus releasing stress. May be he knew he wasnt the kind of person the family needed and was trying to make up for it once he's dead??

The concept is great and the actors were too. But that will is kinda sad and dark. He is being the patriarch even after his death. He still has the control over them as they were given the choice to either accept him and take the inheritence or deny the will and lose the inheritence. Wow, such a clever man.

The family members have more human interaction with his dead body than the living ones. At least, i think it's about a dead father trying to make mend, to be with his loved ones, weirdly, creepily, desperately.

(It can mean a dysfunctional relationship, more breaking of him might mean a much honest, true and healthier human relationship, and the family may finally accept it, smile, *laugh* and taking a new family photo. They look happy in it at least. but anything I say within bracket is literally pulling out of my fart brain alrdy)
