A young woman questions her path in life.
ELSEWHERE is used with permission from Andy Berriman. Learn more at andyberriman.c....
Hanna spends her free time partying and sleeping around like how she thinks a 20-year-old girl should.
But after waking up in a stranger's bed with no bag or her phone missing, she wanders around the city of Newcastle, taking refuge in a church. She then meets Terry, a middle-aged man desperate to connect with his estranged daughter.
Terry offers to help Hanna out with a ride, and as they spend the course of the day together on their various quests and see one another's struggles, they learn more than they expected from one another -- and catch a glimpse of paths that could lead them elsewhere.
Written and directed by Andy Berriman and produced by Maria Caruana Galizia, this heartfelt, intimate drama examines what emerges when two unexpected people cross paths and broaden one another's perspectives through the simple act of genuine connection.
Shot with a sense of low-key yet sharply observed realism, the film has a documentary-like feel, situating its characters and their behavior within a strangely quiet, almost empty world. What the film documents, though, is less a milieu and more a state of isolation, one shared by its two main characters. Hanna and Terry drift aimlessly through the world, unanchored by any meaningful human relation, and their freedom is actually a prison of profound loneliness.
A film like this rests on writing that is both naturalistic yet well-sculpted and performances that are subtle, focused and precise. Lead actors Molly Windsor as Hanna and Mark Addy -- GAME OF THRONES fans will recognize him as ill-fated King Robert Baratheon -- bring the script's excellent dialogue to life, detailing a pair of people burdened with the mistakes and follies of failing interpersonal relationships. Both are lost souls, and witnessing one another at their lowest points, they come together, first in a fit of escapism -- and then a confrontation of its limits, as well as their potential catastrophe of their mistakes.
ELSEWHERE isn't bleak in terms of a portrayal of abject poverty or social ill. But there is a muted but powerful sadness at its core, in its portrayal of people who long for love and belonging, even as they made and make decisions that sabotage these for themselves.
But this undertow of melancholy makes its small yet hopeful ending of ELSEWHERE really resonate. Because in real life, things like a phone call, an offered bouquet of flowers or the generosity of a fellow struggling stranger are the big events of our personal journey -- and the tiny yet vital acts of bravery and kindness that actually change the course of our lives.

Even when someone engages in deliberately irresponsible and risky behavior? I don't think so. Actions have consequences. Wise behavior = a good result, foolish behavior = a bad result. It's not compassionate to excuse bad behavior because they will keep doing dangerous things. You should probably re-think your idea of what compassion means.

Mark Addy and Molly Windsor are two very accomplished actors who nailed this completely. A heartwarming and wrenching story of two lost people, one who's been on a path of abandonment and the other on the verge of stepping onto one. They both help each other, she saw the results of where her future lay and he gained the conviction that he should fight to rectify the mistakes he's made in the past and hopefully achieve reconnection. Great, great work.

I've been at both ends of moments like those being a young man comforted by women that were 10-20 years my senior and then merely a few months later i have the chance to do the very same thing for a middle aged man from my own suburb, i was on my way out with my young group of friends and i couldnt leave this hollowed out rugged man just sit there by the exit. i didnt leave that club until 5 in the morning. now every couple of months now that i'm older i might pop my head in some of these places, and i almost always never end up drinking the house down or dancing, i end up talking to strangers i never meet again. You do get a sense that its a reciprocal healing conversation that you both probably needed, varying ages from varying places, man or woman or transitioning, you'd never meet in any other circumstance perhaps.... but i often walk out more energized at near sunrise then when i came in trying to feed depression or boredom away. i almost always end up finding somebody who needs to find somebody..... if that makes sense. I'm glad Omeleto make these, if it weren't for them i'd of probably never seen anywhere other than my job.

I saw this short film "elsewhere" last year and, by entirely pure coincidence, saw "the unloved (2009)" yesterday and realized the feeling I got from a specific scene* in "the unloved" reminded me of the feeling I got from this short film. So I watched this short film again today and find the lead actresses in each of the films seem to resemble one another. It was a nice surprise to find out they were the same actress (Molly Windsor), and there's no doubt she is beautiful and talented. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these films. But it seems to me now that these two films are related in a sort of "sequel" kind of way and it has changed my initial interpretation of the ending of this short film. Lucy in "the unloved", played by M. Windsor, was the victim of the neglect and being unloved by her parents. Hanna here, played by the same actress, is doing the neglecting part. Of course I know that Lucy and Hanna are two different characters and the ending of "elsewhere" has much of hopeful and uplifting tone but I can't shake the feeling that this is the pattern. The victim of neglected and unloved upbringing, grows up and inflict the same hurt to their child, whether intentional or not. Maybe I am extrapolating too much.

I really, really really wanted to love this. A pair of great performances (especially from Ms Windsor, who clearly has fantastic acting instincts), solid direction and lovely production values...but it fell apart near the end. Actually, it reminded me of a balloon in its final moments making that high--pitched squealing sound. For me...and I have to stress that I'm expressing how I felt about the film, _not_ whether or not it was 'good' or 'bad'...the resolution just didn't live up to everything that came before it.

@@hannahdiane8451 I'm reminded of Samuel Goldwyn's quote (I'm paraphrasing) "If you want to send a message, call Western Union." From my perspective, this film didn't deliver on what you're describing. I _wanted_ it to, but it didn't.

I like Mark Addy. He was hilarious in "Still Standing." I wish they had made more episodes! (except that 'horror film material' little daughter of his.)
