Charlotte has just moved into a new apartment when her new neighbor, in an attempt to help her out, takes one of her boxes and brings it in, despite her protests. But then he lets himself into her apartment without invitation, getting on her nerves, before helping himself to the sink and then leaving.
Though discomfited by Brandon and his idea of witty banter, she thinks that's all there is to it. But then Brandon keeps imposing himself upon Charlotte, inviting her out. But when his overfamiliarity goes too far, Charlotte must decide to draw a line.
Writer-director Dane McCusker's incisive short drama takes viewers up close and uncomfortably personal as one woman navigates the unwanted intrusion of her personal space, both physical and emotional.
McCusker has explored the knotty territory of modern gender relations before, with his acclaimed short ANGELFISH, but has broadened his scope in terms of narrative with this short. As in that earlier short, there's still the muted sense of almost mundane naturalism in the look and feel that gives the sense that a story like this can play out right in our neighborhood. But watching the dynamic play out between Charlotte and her new environment and neighbors offers a more wide-angle perspective on how the social infrastructure around Charlotte causes her to doubt her own emotional experience.
Both the writing and the performances are deft at capturing the nuances of social interaction and Charlotte's personal experience. Microcurrents of fear, irritation and annoyance swirl within Charlotte -- all beautifully captured by lead actress Jessica Murphy -- but she's told by friends, her mother and other neighbors that Brandon is just being friendly.
Eventually, though, Charlotte has to call on Brandon to fix her sink, and when he takes one step too close to Charlotte, she decides to assert herself -- leading to an ugly confrontation and some unpleasant consequences.
From its arena of conflict to its title, THE COMPLEX is about space: a physical space, yes, but also how they overlay with personal and social space. The conflict in the story, both internal and external, is mapped and played out with a sharp eye for detail.
But THE COMPLEX deftly captures how the world around us forms an echo chamber of ideas and emotion, amplifying or muffling our inner experiences while reinforcing ideas about power, compliance and silence. And this echo chamber is given shape and presence in our lives by how they play out in the places of our lives, even in the depths of our homes, where we should feel safe from the outside world -- and yet often, so many don't.

Absolutely. He is taking away from her her right to say no. Imagine someone offers you a taste of something. You say, "No, thanks." Maybe you don't like that food. Maybe you're not hungry. @@wanderer5200 In this case there is not a definite answer, but if you pay attention closely, she already felt conflicted about weather or not she was overreacting. In my thinking, I believe that she felt like she didn't have a lot of options, maybe limited money from just moving in, or she was trying to not paint him as a creep since another woman felt comfortable around him and maybe didn't have uncomfortable encounters. It's complex, because she also wanted to stop being reminded of him with the drops, and asking him to fix it might have been her way of trying to cope or get over it. There is also the point of not wanting to potentially anger him by hiring someone else and them him finding out about it. She's really in quite an odd position. I'd recommend looking not only at her reactions to him, but to other people's reactions, even her mom's from the very start and then look at how she processes it and how these may shape her reactions.

@PK Collins no that wasn’t the point at all, she refused his help, then after explicitly refusing his help he helped himself to her things, which is a violation of a person’s personal space, then, he let himself into her apartment, I don’t know what world you live in, but I would never go into a woman’s apartment uninvited, again another violation of personal space. The set the tone of their awkward relationship. Then his comments were awkward and not funny especially since he didn’t know her and obviously wouldn’t know she would receive them. Which is why she asked him how much she owned him and as she felt uncomfortable with him, she didn't want to be in his debt. I can understand why he made her feel uncomfortable, he was too forthcoming when she first met him. Couldn't he have had a drink out of the tap in his own apartment for example. It is only when you realize that she seems to have no friends, that it becomes apparent that she does things like this in her life all the time.

She then asked: "Do we have a building superintendent or like a fix it guy?" The reply: ''Oh we usually ask Brendan to do all or stuff. He's a plumber" Also Brendan says, 'Hooroo' meaning goodbye, no wukkas instead of no worries and 'he's such a dag' used to describe someone who is a bit socially odd used by the neighbor, make me think this is set in Australia. I have rented many a place in Australia, none of them ever had a superintendent. In Australia if your building needs fixing, you have to contact your real estate agent or land lord to fix it, otherwise you may have to pay for the repair yourself.

This is why I keep to myself in my apartment building. If I do happen to run into people, I say a friendly "hello", but I actually try to avoid running into people. I don't want to have semi-real "friendships" with neighbors who feel like they can pop over at your place unannounced, but since they don't really know you, they could turn against you easily at any moment, and you can't even escape because they live right there!

This is kinda funny cause i'm a teenager and literally worried that i won't make friends when i leave for uni. @@ibolyakatona8192 I just saw your comment now. Actually, at uni, I would encourage you to be keep being friendly and try to talk to people and make friends. The university situation is different from when you buy or even rent your own home later, and the main reason is this: At uni, if you are having some trouble with the people who live near you, you can request to change your room and/or move to a different building (this is usually true in the United States, but you can double-check the situation at your own uni to be sure). At uni, you won't have a lot of furniture and items to move, so the move would be easy, but if you own your own home later and you want to move because of bad neighbors, the process would be much harder because you have a lot of furniture and things to move, and, if you own the home, you have to worry about all of that trouble with buying and selling your home. I was very friendly at uni (and actually, I never had to move because of bad experiences- haha, but I do know a couple of people that changed their room or dorm building because of trouble with their roommate, etc.), and uni is actually one of the BEST places to meet people and become friends because you live very close to people and you can easily spend time and do daily activities like eating with them. I am almost 50 years old and I still love and am in close contact with my closest friends from uni. Still, even though I was friendly at uni, I am very quiet in my apartment building now for the reasons I described above. I wish you the best at uni and I hope you have many great experiences there like I did. Enjoy!

Ending it on the start would have been the best solution. These people are like predators, like wolves they're prowling around looking who they can devour. If you show them right at the start that you WILL enforce your boundaries, they know that they can't do anything against you and they won't try again that soon. But if you let them walk all over you, they found a victim. And if you start enforcing boundaries then, you are the bad guy. Because you robbed them of their prey, their opportunity to commit crimes against you. Then you're their enemy. And because you hurt their feelings, these criminals may, in rare cases, go to great length to harm you. Don't worry, the last point is really rare, in most cases they'll move on. - You have to expect a defamation campaign against you, like in this case, though. But enforcing boundaries is definitely better then letting someone walk over you.

Literally going through similar at the moment with the superintendent for the building I live in. He lives in the building, on the floor below me though and he's a nightmare too. He's said a novels' worth of inappropriate stuff to me but one example being when he came to fix a hole in the wall under my sink and then cornered me in my kitchen, told me I have 'perfect model lips' and told me that he's never kissed 'perfect model lips' before and asked if I would be comfortable with giving him a kiss and to only answer with yes or no... and may I mention that my 2 young children were in the living room across from us and I was too scared to react in a way that would scare them, so I felt forced, but I said NO!! I sorta know what you mean, in the UK it is sometimes referred to as having an 'overbearing personality' and it can be really off putting for sure. Even as a bloke myself I feel a little repelled by both men and women with that sort of personality. I think the director of this short film purposely left that part vague. It depends on your perspective. Those who believe he was being inappropriate will reason that he purposely played with the taps to force them to drip so that she would need his help fixing them. Another interpretation is that this was just the result of a faulty old tap and the water dripping is a metaphor for the thoughts that are racing through her mind and her unease at this seemingly uncomfortable predicament.

As a guy I've been on the reverse side of this situation when I literally had no interest, was trying to be helpful the way my parents taught me, and then became frustrated at being labeled a deviant by an overly anxious woman. Despite this- I also know the reverse has happened: where a guy has ill intent and is being devious with his advances so as to make things safe for himself. The movie can indeed be viewed from two perspectives with 4 lessons (one about anxiety and another about the physical presence of threat men pose, often without being aware, one about bad men, and another about social dynamics and the advantages of familiarity). I find it sad that the vocal viewership is focusing on only one of each. Fear is a powerful motivator, but if you lean too hard on it you are likely to fall into the camp that makes anxiety driven mistakes and ends up alone.

I’m extroverted and I would never walk into someone’s apartment. I would have stood in doorway and offered to help and then she would have been forced to chatter with me. But I also would never knock on anyone’s door at 11:00pm. Common decency is not to knock after 7:00pm unless there is an emergency. 9:00pm maybe you need a cup of sugar or batteries and you are out. This was a good short film, I really liked it and I like reading a few of the comments. Because of age and particular culture, I would have never left him at my front door after he delivered the box. I noticed a lot of things that she could have done differently to establish boundaries. She should've stopped at the door, took the box, and closed the door. Next, once she saw that it was him at the door late a night, she could've not replied or only replied without opening the door. Additionally, she mentioned that she is like a worm, drilling on and on about things, so maybe that is her personality. And Lastly, never leave a stranger in your personal space, especially one that you are not comfortable with. She could've called over a friend or talked on the telephone until he was finished with the plumbing. Additionally, if she really did not want to be bothered with him she could have called another plumber. I say all of this to say, this is a film without a lot of content. And I am not defending his behavior but there are ways to discourage that type of behavior from the start.

Studies have shown women put up with a lot more than that when they're under pressure or put on the spot. The same women who can rationally make a plan later and believe they would act on it. There's an element of panic that plays a role we can't fully embody until we are in those shoes. I thought they did a great job showing how she doubts herself about her own instincts.

I am suffering from a similar thing and now do not answer the door and don’t like leaving my apartment, i get notes outside my door and don’t want to see them. I have a mat close to my front door so notes can’t be pushed under. Its not a creppy young man but a older man
