A young woman attends a funeral.
LITTLE GREY BUBBLES is used with permission from Charles Wahl. Learn more at charleswahl.com.
Kim and Marlon never met in real life, but they considered one another best friends, bonding initially over a shared love of photography and cameras and texting one another every day.
But Marlon dies, sending one last message to Kim saying he had something important to tell her, but not able to send his message before suddenly passing away.
With that eternal "dot dot dot" lingering between them -- and wanting to see if she can recover his final message -- Kim decides to attend his funeral to gain a better sense of the friend she never got to meet.
Written and directed by Charles Wahl, this thoughtful, elegantly crafted drama probes the elusiveness and mysteries of human connection, as well as the unusual shapes and expressions of grief. It takes on the contemporary subject of online and digital relationships, but it asks eternal questions of what it means to really know someone, and whether such an idea is even possible, even in an age of over-sharing and 24/7 communication.
There is almost a severe sense of realism in the visuals, which manage to be both stark and muted by turns, thanks to an emphasis on natural and practical lighting. True to a film whose main characters are photographers, the cinematography is exquisite and restrained, able to conjure an enigmatic atmosphere by transmuting simple and mundane everyday details into symbols of almost talisman-like suggestion. The framings also alternate between a close, almost intense intimacy and an off-kilter distance when Kim is among Marlon's community, emphasizing her separateness from his community and perhaps her own personal remoteness as a person.
Lead actor Kaelen Ohm offers an engaging performance as Kim, whose arc is essentially an outsider coming into an unknown world. The twist, though, is that she believes herself to be more on the inside as one of Marlon's closest confidantes. She speaks with a gentle, kind yet almost naive confidence about his deepest thoughts that she was privy to. And yet as Kim encounters Marlon's widow and their friends, their reactions evince a great skepticism and even hostility towards her.
How well does she know him, anyway? Could they really be just friends? Was there no ulterior motive? Were they really as close as she believed? Kim finds herself never quite drawn into the fold, leaving her in a state of suspension with her own strange grief.
LITTLE GREY BUBBLES doesn't directly answer those questions, practicing an intelligent, rigorous storytelling economy guided by a sense of restraint and a refusal of easy sentimentality. Instead, perhaps recognizing that those answers are as elusive as an electronic ghost, it lets those questions hang in the air, both for viewers and for Kim.
Beyond that, it ponders just what happens to these modern bonds when they inevitably stop -- as all relationships will, eventually, due either to the vagaries of life or mortality. It has been said that grief is the price we pay for love, and what's remarkable about LITTLE GREY BUBBLES is how it portrays Kim's grief as something essentially separate and isolated from the community of grief that his real-life friends and family share. In many ways, the isolation of her mourning feels a larger tragedy at the end -- and poses disquieting, melancholic questions as many of our real-life relationships shape-shift in life and online as a society.

@Ashley-MaRie Deeble days are different now, but as an older woman, trust comes first and also friendship is so important and can be done between men and women. I have younger males I'm good friends with, that I would trust to be first in line if I were in trouble. My husband works closely with women all day, now online. They often tell him their troubles and worries, They are younger, he's the "boss" but, I am proud he shares his wisdom with them. Hearing it all now that he works from home, has been terrific. I'm so happy that his female employees trust him, and so glad he goes out of his way to help if there is a family crisis. Such as covering for an employee that is trying to home school three children as a single mom. He does their math online class. I think if your marriage lasts long enough, you want your spouse to have friends....and be open about it.

I thinks it’s because of how online, you are sitting behind a screen and a username. You are anonymous. You can say anything and connect with others without the need to be embarrassed or worried that the people around you will know about your secrets. Meeting people face to face, they all put on a facade. They most likely secretly talk behind you back and honestly speaking, those are not people you can trust. Those are the people who will betray you and it’s reasonable to say that trusting people that you’ve met is harder than a stranger online. Just my view :D

Well with strangers there's no judgement. You don't see each other face to face (like family). Your friendship is built up off emotions so it's easier to just be yourself with them. There's no distractions. Nothing holding you back from letting your guard down. And it's easier.

The wife had the phone. The messages were there. She could have read them. Why would she tell a stranger he was dead and when and where the funeral was if she thought they had an affair. It was good, except for that.
@YouTubeallowedmynametobestolen
@YouTubeallowedmynametobestolen 4 жыл бұрын
@@dustigenes I read it that the wife, while suspicious, wasn't sure what to think. I don't know much about the technology, but I would think there would be ways to delete any posts that would expose an affair. And they could have kept such correspondence limited to phone calls, so the wife wouldn't have been able to know about them. At the same time, I assume the wife contacted this woman because the wife loved her husband and wanted to do what would he would have wanted her to do--including letting this online friend know about his passing and the wake (not funeral). So it was good, period. (No "except for".) Does that make sense?

@CarlyKpdx I talk to many people every day. I dont have feelings for them. Some I even talk to over text through out the day if they aren't nearby. Being open to someone isn't always because of sexual, or emotional desire, it's just a connection. Would you be considered in love with your mother or father if you talked to them everyday throughout the day? No, you'd just have a strong bond with them. Here I see Kim has a strong bond with Marlon. Despite the distance, they still talked, they shared what they could of their day together and bonded over cameras. They were close, but not close like he was with his wife. Kim even said he talked only good things about her when he did. Which shows that he loved his wife a lot, even when talking with a stranger. He talked about his family, his kids because she obviously knew their names and faces as soon as she saw them. Even his brother, who he wished to have a better relationship with. Remember as kids, (or atleast I do) teachers would have you write a letter to another student in another town. They called it being penpals. I feel like this is what having a penpal in today's world is like. Texting, but never meeting. Being able to share without having to literally be there. I wrote my penpal about my week everytime we wrote a letter. I'd sometimes have four pages, front and back filled, acknowledging what they wrote and then writing what I wrote about. And when we met, we felt like best friends. But it was only the one meeting. And I missed writing to him when the project stopped. (It was to teach us how to send mail and such.) If I ever met Evan irl again. It'd be like meeting a long lost friend. One that is even showcased in this video. You never know how strong a bond can be, even at its simplest form.

Yeah, it sucks. I feel like I gotta explain myself to other (in-person) friends of mine with online friends. Online friends and in-person friends have their differences, of course, but to assume that one is inherently more important/more 'real' than the other is a misconception. Online friends can be just as close as in-person friends. For me, personally, I'm closer with most online friends I have because my in-person friends don't understand mental health stuff as much. That doesn't mean in-person friends are 'worse' now, it just means that FOR ME, I'm closer with online friends.

well, funerals really are for the living. I got from the video that close friends thought their friendship went past online, probably due to gossip. And sometimes a friendship grows into love; Be it romantic or not, it will raise other's eyebrows. I don't think their problem was about their friendship being online, for the brother it was that he was family, but not really close anymore. for the friends it was about how much time they talked about, for them, nothing. For the wife's BFF was about at least an emotional affair. for that older lady was about chit chat...

I met a guy at a halloween party in 2019. I gave him my Tiktok and we chatted on there, eventually I gave him my phone number then Snapchat. It’s been 2 years and he’s one of the closest people in my life. I’ve met up with him at the shopping center a couple times and we just mess around. He’s my best friend and helps me a lot, I’m hopefully meeting up with him in three weeks! Yet, my brother teases me saying that he’s my boyfriend, my Mum doesn’t do anything to stop it, and my Dad always asks if I’m dating him and that he better not be a low lie slob. I hate it whenever I hang out with a guy someone has to say ‘You so like him don’t you’ why can’t I just be friends with who I want without being criticized or have people asking questions...

Is this a real fear? I watch this very old show called honeymooners. In one episode the bus driver helps this old lady & she dies & leaves him a bird.. honestly just be kind to people even if it is hard & that kindness will help you to not worry so much about dying alone. You might not realize the impact you have on people. Also due to distance or circumstances you might die alone, but someone will remember you for your kindness. Hope that makes sense.

Gold Rose I agree with you. That’s what bothered me the most. There’s nothing wrong with having friendships but when your wife and brother have to ask an online friend if you loved them? I disagree with you all. This is not as weird as it seems. It is not that the brother didn't know if his brother loved him or not, but he said they do text just once in a few months. I have a brother and I love him. but we go months without talking to each other... and even when we are together our bond isn't that strong. It is just becaue some people get along better with others. I know my brother and how he acts around family and how he acts around friends... We all tend to behave differently. I just make sure to tell the people around me how I feel about them, because you never know what might happen and it'll be to late. I have a very very good friend, I'd say one of my best friends and I only have two in person. But this guy... I have never met him in person. He was always there for me when nobody was or could... he always cheered me up in my worst moment of life and always supported me and still does. I loved my father... but he and I were estranged in the end due to an argument. Sometimes you cannot tell everything to your family.

I would think because his best friend was not his wife or his boys or his own brother. He was reaching out to a stranger to share his thoughts. If Kim found a better friend in a stranger, then she was socially awkward and probably found it hard to be close to the people around her. And now they are all thinking that about Marlon and themselves too. That he thought he couldn't find intimacy and friendship in the people closest to him.

It seemed like Annie was not asking, and she was the only one who had the phone. The brother, Annie's friend, and others were asking those questions, but clearly Annie was perfectly ok with her being there and would be the only one to have access to that info.

@@therealme6526 finding it hard to get close to the people around you doesn't mean you're socially awkward, it just means you have the wrong people around you. Even if those people are your family. I've been in that position my whole life and almost started to believe I was insane. I still wonder sometimes if I am, but finding the right people to get close to is what anyone should do, don't be the "but they're my family" type. Family can suck sometimes.

I have social anxiety so meeting people in person is really hard for me. Online, it's much easier to open up and be myself, so I could definitely see how people get close online. Plus, I keep up with most of my in-person friends by text anyway, so it's not like it's even that different in this day and age. Also, the first 6-7 years of my relationship with my now-husband were basically all online because we were long-distance. Like the first couple of times I met him were in person but we barely knew each other at all before he left for school so it was basically an online relationship for years.

I met a friend once in the internet, she was very open and caring, we exchanged drawings and paintings which we liked to do at fridays. She helped me with school which we spent nights talking about trigonometry and this equation that we bot did not know how to solve. I remember saying to her " I wish we can be bestfriends in real life" and she responded "It would be fricking awesome. I had so much fun with her, playing, studying and goofy calls at night. One day i was coming home from school and she sent a message. The message said " John im so sorry, i was waiting for the day i can talk you about this but i dont have the courage to say it, last week i was diagnosed with a brain tumor, i cant walk correctly and stand up straight. In a hour i will get a craniotomy for the surgery of the tumor, the doctors doesnt know if i get infections or even if i can survive, but dont worry coconut i will not die lmao just remember to get that 10 on biology". I fell on my knees, desperately crying, i wasn't able to do nothing but to wish she can survive. A week has passed and she still didn't respond, i got a A+ on biology, im pretty sure she would be super happy to see my test results. I never knew that we were making memories, we were just having fun.

The last message was so innocent and described their friendship perfectly, defying the speculation and suspicion. Everyone would be expecting a big impactful message along with her attempts to dispel what everyone believed was the truth, but a simple everyday text is what she received and it's so powerful. It provided validation, not only to her, but the wife as well. The simplicity of the text is what makes the emotions so powerful. Great job.

This was one of my relationships with a girl named Blair. I loved her. She was one of my best friends and taught me to grow in ways I never thought I was capable of. When she passed I was so devastated. I was in California. She was in Kentucky. There was absolutely no way I was going to be able to go to her viewing, her funeral. Her family doesn’t know of me. She refused to share about her family, and after her death I found out why by talking to her sister. It makes me so sad, especially now that I’m isolated in my home. I want to go to her grave and just talk to her nonstop. I want to give her a nice bouquet of flowers and some Captain America merch she always loved. I will never forget you Blair. I love you.

Hope this is not the case. Humans need physical contact like every other animal on the planet. Technology cant replace a hug or spending time with someone. I think this new generation sees less kids playing outside and interacting in person... because their on their phone or gaming or on social media. They arent happier...being in front of a screen most of the day... I feel glad to be before cell phones and social media.... it forced you to eat with the family, go out to play, study groups over a friends house, outings for boy(girl) scouts/ Indian guides, 4 square, spending time with grandparents and hiking / skydiving / offroading with new friends. Idk...maybe a little screen replaces all that for some. ...got to go feed the horses... gl.

My friend took her life. I called our friends to tell them and every response was, "So she finally did it." I was appalled and struck by wonder! How could I have missed what so many others knew as truth. A year later I shared this with a co-worker who could tell I was painfully struck by this event. I told my co-worker how my fired and I pulled our money together to go to Jane Goodall's lecture, we started a city college course of cultures of Africa; it became a litany of all these wonderful tales of eating, studying and laughing together and I could not understand how I could miss she would suicide. Then my co-worker told me very quietly, "Maybe she was different with you." Now, I am at peace knowing we were at our best with each other.

I’ve been in her place. The last text I sent to her was “is everything ok?” Horrible feeling to finally be at someone’s house after years of saying “oh we have all the time in the world to meet.” only to be mourning when you never even got to share the same space - or a hug. When I called and her brother in law answered I knew before he even spoke the words. She was a sister to my spirit. She was this bright, shining, supernova of intelligence and wit and beauty. She was my everything. Truly. We watched movies together. We discussed books and poetry and music and we created things together. She was a brilliant writer. She loved me for who I was and our level of communication was pure and vibrant and profound. Her son was just a toddler then. Now he’s almost an adult. He looks like her. He barely even got to know her. It’s been 15 years. I still miss her every single day. I still cry often. I still want to hurt the man who killed her.

When I was a bit younger, I met my best friend on an online game. We joked about me going there to meet her and her coming to meet me. She lived in Hawaii and I lived in the Midwest, so it would be pretty hard to meet irl as we were young . A few months passed and she told me the week before she was diagnosed with cancer. We always talked to each other every single day. I remember the days before she died. It was around Christmas and she had just had surgery and the doctors were positive she was going to survive. Then, she stopped responding to my text messages. Me and her always jokes around about how we’d meet in heaven if she ever died. A month later, I got a message from her sister saying she had died. I still miss her to this day and I’ll never have another friend like her. R.I.P. “🌺Rosy🌺” - daisy

I met a person randomly online. We were so similar that we kept on talking. We were both depressed then and we both got suicidal. Yet, we stood by each other and talked for hours everyday, 1-2 hours is like our normal now, might go upto 6. It doesn't even feel right if we don't talk one day. He became my bestie, a big part of my life in 5 months. We are both happy now in our own lives despite the problems. Now sometimes I feel scared that he might do something to himself and this video almost says what my story will be then. The worst part, I won't even be able to go to his funeral, wouldn't even know about it. We never met, but we did video calls and talked about anything and everything freely. Buddy, you are a part of me and I am grateful to have you in my life

I hope things get better for you ❤

My best friend in the whole world I met online. I’m a girl and he’s a guy, I was invited to his birthday party but due to COVID I wasn’t able to go. We live in the same country and are only a year apart in age. I was so scared to ask my mom if I could go to his birthday, luckily she understood but I didn’t want her to think it was anything weird or sexual because most people assume that. The nicest people I’ve ever met I met online and I’m so thankful for each and every one of them. I wish the stigma around it wasn’t so strong, it’s silly to think our best friends or soul mates would live in our hometown, or even within our country. The internet bridges that gap and I’m so thankful for it.

One of my best friends when I was 14 was an online friend. He was 2 years older than me and we messaged every day. One of my friends at school knew him in person. When he was 18 he had a heart attack and half a year later he got a transplant. My friend, who knew him and I planned on visiting him during his recovery. But he never recovered. I didn't attend his funeral and to this day I'm still to scared to visit his grave. Knowing for sure that he didn't just ghosted me but... really passed away. I don't want it to become reality. Ive never been into gaming and didnt realise how much of a community there is with gaming online. There was a group of 10+ people there, all different ages, both boys and girls mostly ftom out of state. They became some of his best friends and yet they never met in person. This both touched and amazed me that you can have such a strong connection with a person or people that you've never met before.

I don't know why this video appeared on my recommendations today but... I don't know what to say Today, my 86 years old grandma got her covid 19 test. It came positive. The moment I received the news, I started crying and remembered of her I'm scared, I'm don't wanna lose her now. She paid my sewing machine because she always wanted me to learn how to sew. One day, she told me I looked like Lynda Carter's wonder woman and I promised her that I would make her costume. She also wanted me to learn to play the piano. She bought me a keyboard, it's been five years now, and it's been less than a week since I tried to play it again, finally learning to play Date, from Your Name. She loves Elvis Presley, I'm planning to give her an album for her birthday, a day after mine. One summer while I was home , the cousin texted me that my best friend got into accident and died right away. To this day I still can't wrap my head around the fact that we never got to meet physically. I didn't attend the funeral because it was too late. She visits me in my dreams so often. It is good to have online friends sometimes. Sometimes, it's easier to tell them things that you wouldn't tell people in real life. I'm closer to my friends online than my real life friends because when I'm online, I find more people that share common interests with me. While my friends in real life are nice, but do not share many interests because I can only make friends with people in my surroundings. Online, I make friends with people all around the world and understand a new perspective of life outside of where I live, and have similar hobbies. They make me happy because I can talk about the things I enjoy talking about with other people or about problems I have in life.

I think the real question should be how can you be emotionally attached to someone you only hang out with and never actually talk to. Online friendships can be 100 times stronger than irl friendships because through text you share everything about yourself with less restraints. You get to know who a person really is without any judgment from appearance or anything. Being online friends with someone is far more freeing than being irl friends with someone.
