She wants her to have a job and be successful, and not take a gamble on a career that probably won't pan out. She took the time to make plans with her sister and follow through. She's the one getting ditched here. Keep in mind, that Mary's character in the beginning is basically hibernating in the dark after an all nighter. She's bent out of shape and distant towards her own family. Her sisters comparison is completely fair. She may have been a little harsh towards her, but what do you expect from your blood? If they aren't honest with you, they aren't doing you any favors. I gotta point out too, ditching your friends and family who have made the time and arranged to do things with you, even in the pursuit of your 'passions', is a selfish action. That's why she's depressed in the first place.

Through her muse she realizes the weight is not what it seems and thus finds her voice again. Her sound technician doubles down on this theme by blanking out the windows in the bathroom removing the irritant of the dog and thus lightening the chained bicycle even more. The bathroom scene also alludes to the song "Sounds of Silence" which is about a musician, Paul Simon, siting alone in a dark bathroom struggling to write a song. Paul Simon chose the bathroom because he could better hear his guitar resonate off the tile walls.
