It's funny when you think that essentially all of FMA is a fight against one person. The main villain is split into 8 parts. All of them make One, but One does not make the All, going against the laws of Alchemy

Probably the father became not a Homunculus when he gets the human body. Therefor "Selim is the first Homunculus" is not wrong after that time, maybe.

How I see it, Father shed the homunculus moniker. I think he came to see himself more of a "god" than a "homunculus". So he gave his creations his old classification, and stands above them.

Hohenheim would essentially have to commit suicide thousands of times to exhaust the number of lives within him. So yes, he is basically doomed to walk the Earth until those lives run out. This is part of what he meant when he told Trisha he felt like a monster -- he would outlive her and the boys and everyone he has ever loved or would become close to. Also, no, he can't bring back Trisha. As Edward learned, there's no bringing back the dead. They tried to bring back their mother with random components and blood, which they equated to the soul, and what they got was a mass of disfigured flesh with the soul of Alphonse inside it. Even Izumi, with the remains of her dead child, did not bring back something with the same characteristics. Nothing can replicate the soul. The dead will remain dead, as alchemy cannot create or restore the soul, which is what we deem vital to human life.

It's damnation for those who see value in natural life. I personally don't think I would mind living a lifetime or two more beyond my natural life, but what if you live so long, you can no longer feel genuine affection for others, knowing they'll die before you? If history repeats itself and you watch tragedy after tragedy wrought by human hands? If everyone or near everyone else dies in some extinction event, but you alone survive, what then? If you, like Hohenheim, have to potentially face 1000s of years with the souls of other people inside you, would you look forward to having to live with their suffering, or trying to make peace with them while feeling them slowly die as you expend their life energy? There's a lot of uncertainties with this sort of immortality, and the simplicity of a mortal, human life seems so much easier than that.

The "random" names that Hoenheim says after the transmutation were the names of his best friends, slaves like him. When Hoenheim began to learn alchemy, his master took such liking to him that he adopted him almost as a son, and removed his slave position. Then Hoenheim no had to do heavy work, he went down to the city to visit his friends and told them how wonderful it was to be "free", he also began to teach them to read and write just as the homunculus had done with him. Many of his friends told him what they wanted to do in the future, the plans they had. They are the ones Hoenheim calls, and probably the ones he has inside his body.

The saying "I'm a philosopher stone in a form of man", meaning he actually is one, since he has hundreds thousands of souls inside his body, and his body works as a "flask" to contain the souls inside him. Yea, when Hohenheim just says it, it gives that feel of "damn", cause he accepted his faith and willing to share that truth with others, if needed.

THE LORE! - Olivier being questioned for murder: "I did it but I was right." Us as a fandom: "NO YOUR HONOR SHE'S AN ANGEL!" - I do love the callback of Mustang offering her flowers because the Armstrong informant is indeed the florist he bought the carfull of flowers from lol. And now we trust in Oliver's top-notch acting!!! - The use of code in this show is so fun! From morse code to phonetic names for letters, I love it all. - The origins of Hoenhiem and Father always gives me chills. To see this interdimensional being befriend a slave, build him up and teach him the most advanced art known to man, trick the humans around them who were corrupt, and annihilate everything the former slave loved while wearing his face is truly a unique tale I never guessed. We've heard of the fall of Xerxes in a single night so many times in the series, and we're finally rewarded by knowing not only what happened to it, but getting 2 character backgrounds in one. Also this means Hoenhiem is the last pure Xerxian in existence! If you noticed, everyone he interacted with in Xerxes had blonde hair and gold eyes, which means like the Ishvalans they had a specific look racially. This also means that those traits are dominant, since Ed and Al carried them as half Xerxian, instead of their mothers dark hair and green eyes. Who knows how many generations that would carry over until it was so diluted it didn't show anymore. - There were about a million people in Xerxes, split between Father and Hoenhiem. The souls heal and keep Hoenhiem alive, so he would live until the last soul died. Imagine if he did want to kill himself, a soul would perish to heal him. And then he would just have to do that another half a million times. He still feels pain, so after the first attempt, I imagine it would be too excruciating to continue doing for that many times. - So the difference between Hoenhiem and a homunculus is that a homunculus has a single small stone as their heart with the body forming around it, while Hoenhiem himself essentially is made of liquid philosopher's stone. A homunculi body is essentially a tube baby with no genetics to pass on, so they can't have kids, while Hoenheim is a genetic human body running on the fuel that is souls, so he can pass on his family line no issue. If you remember when he was spilling his blood around the country, his blood crawled into the ground. Because it's part of him, the stone. Hoenhiem is indeed a sacrifice, because he has been into the portal of truth, but the souls of Xerxes paid the toll and it was opened through the blood Father took from Hoenhiem, so he didn't lose anything physically.

Okay, to bring it al together for now: 1. A Philosopher's stone is created by sacrificing living human beings. _(Father and Hohenheim sacrificed living human beings)_ 2. It uses the power of the human souls in itself. _(Father and Hohenheim can use the power of human souls in themselves. We kinda saw it, when Ed used some of Xerxes' people inside Envy, to escape Gluttony's belly. It's basically the same. Remember, Philosopher's stones at the cores of Homunculi.)_ _(Btw... Do you remember the scene of Hohenheim standing in the middle of nowhere and asking random names to forgive him, because he has to use them... And the he stuck his hands in his chest, spread some blood and the blood did some weird twisty moving into the ground..? Guess who they were. And maybe check the names in this episode again, as well. 😉)_ 3. A Philosophers stone brings immortality. _(Father and Hohenheim are basically immortal.)_ 4. Just like it's many names, a Philosopher's stone can be seen in many different shapes. _(So why not in Form of a man..?)_ In the future there will be some funny thing with 'Philosopher's Stone -> Gold'... But I'll leave that for now.^^

The amount of foreshadowing to this is *chef's kiss*. Firstly, Father's alchemy has red lightning effects. Blue lightning effects is used for normal alchemy while the red lightning is used for alchemy using the philosopher's stone as power. Secondly, while in Gluttony, Ling mentioned that creating a philosopher's stone out of the whole population of Xerxes should create a massive philosopher's stone. Well, Father and Hohenheim sure are big in terms of all the other philosopher's stones we've seen. Since Philosopher's stones can take on any shape and form, a human form isn't out of the equation. Then the Sages from the East and West for Amestris and Xing respectively: Father taught Amestris alchemy so of course he can control it; Hohenheim taught Xing alkahestry which has more medicinal uses so you can see his philosophy shine through. Also, though only in hindsight, the only people with both blonde hair and golden eyes are descendants of Xerxes aka Ed and Al (and Hohenheim of course). The philosopher's stone transmutation circle was also once mistaken for the human transmutation circle by Ed when he didn't have all the pieces in Gluttony's stomach. Theoretically, Father created the human transmutation taboo to cover up that it's not actually to bring back the dead, but rather to open the Portal of Truth (which he requires for sacrifices). There's so much different threads being foreshadowed in this show, but this one is one of my favourites.
@Artanis99
@Artanis99 10 ай бұрын
Nope. The taboo about raising dead existed even before that, because it always failed and had horrible consequences for alchemist attempting it. The very creation of Father implies that Xerxean alchemists were aware of existence of Truth and the Gate as Father was created as a way to gain knowledge of alchemy from beyond the Gate without having to pay too much and the experiment had succeeded. The other taboo about creating gold is I suspect either purely human law as it could collapse economy or more terrifying possibility is that it deals with nuclear fission or fusion with predictable consequences (i.e. big boom and hard radiation.

One thing the Anime doesn’t tell you (or isn’t clear) about Father is that The Kingdom of Xerxes (using Hohemheims blood) was able to create Father from the essence of Truth (The Eye you see at the Portal of Truth) itself. The reason The King of Xerxes listened to him and took his word as Truth is because it comes from Truth itself.

I got the feeling, a sense of catharsis when I made this realization and also gained unsurmountable levels of admiration and respect towards the author of FMA. And also maybe one question you haven't really asked: Why do Ed and Al have such a golden shade of hair, quite different from other blond characters we've seen so far (apart from Hohenheim). Turns out, in Xerxes it was a normal hair colour! I guess it's a detail but I thought it was quite interesting when I first saw the Xerxes people and saw the familiar hair everywhere. And it's also a little sad because it shows how Ed and Al (and Hohenheim) are the last remnants of a formerly great civilization.

That conversation between Mustang and Hawkeye is one of my favorites in the show. I always thought it was pretty cool. By the way, young Hohenheim's voice actor in this dub is the guy who voiced Alphonse in FMA 2003. Finally, the lore! The explanation about the connection between Hohenheim and Father. lol that scene at the end before the ED never failed to surprise most people. I've always thought the reason Father could control the alchemy in Amestris is cause he was the one who taught the people there that and so he could have given them any information/technique that benefited him. The characters from Xing did say there's something weird about the alchemy in Amestris so it's probably different elsewhere. Maybe.

As I said, my favorite episode. :D Really fun to see the reaction. "Homunculus" in real-life alchemical terms means a sort of...artificial human, originally a fully formed miniature human, giving a bit context to why it was called "Dwarf in the flask/Little one in the flask". Father is/was a homunculus, but he's not really called that these days so when Pride said that he's the first homunculus he meant that he's the first from the set of seven sins whom Father created. The way I understand it the people of Xerxes (in particular Hohenheim's master, whom I assume to be a court alchemist) managed to...bring forth The Dwarf in the Flask into this world through some means of rudimentary alchemy and used him as a source of alchemical knowledge. And I just love how it completely changes the view most people have of Hohenheim, who seemed so cold and distant and borderline villainous at the start of the story. You can really understand what he's gone through now.

And NOW you understand why Van Hohenheim acted the way he did when he meets the boys. He knew far more than any of them can comprehend. If you remember back a few post credit scenes ago Hohenheim was standing thanking a long list of name before stabbing himself in the chest with his fingers. He was thanking a tiny list of the souls trapped inside him. Also you can now piece together this is where the Eastern and Western sages came from Father headed West and founded Amestris, Van Hohenheim went East and ended up in Xing

The transmutation circle that wiped out xerxes was the same as the one you would use to make a philosopher's stone. Because van and father stood in the middle of it, the souls sacrificed would create a stone that is literally fused with his own soul. Essentially, he has the power of a stone powered by thousands of souls at his disposal at all points of his life.

I think the question "where alchemy is coming from?" is like asking "where chemistry is coming from?" in real life. It's just a form of science that people figured out in a few thousand years. Then accidentally discovered something they weren't supposed to, and it all went nuclear from there.

Remember what Dr. Marcus said about philosopher's stones coming in different forms? Sometimes a stone; sometimes a liquid. A philosopher's stone is simply an object that contains a large amount of human souls that can be exchanged to perform really big alchemy--and since Hohenheim contains an enormous amount of souls, he is a walking philosopher's stone. The interesting thing is that it was always a myth that a philosopher's stone could bypass the laws of equivalent exchange. It doesn't. It's just exchanging some of the souls stored within. Nothing comes without a price.

Yes, I highly recommend that you rewatch this series! FMA is one of those that gets better with every viewing, and I speak as someone who has lost count of the number of times I've seen this, read the manga, and watched reactions to it on KZbin. It NEVER gets old. One of the most horrifying parts of Hohenheim's backstory that I don't think is touched upon enough is the fact that Homunculus thought the whole "let's sacrifice an entire country and get power and immortality" gig was a favor for his blood brother. He could have manipulated the events so that he was the sole recipient of the ritual, but instead split the "rewards" 50-50 with Hohenheim.

Mustang is a colonel in the central command forces, I suppose he deals mostly with paperwork like requisition forms, dealing with the trainee who shot himself. And like what scar was doing in central THAT woulda been ALOT of paperwork. Since he's a state alchemist and only a colonel he does still see combat if its required like the 1st episode vs ice alchemist. He woulda needed to write out a report for himself, one for hawkeye, a requisition form for new ignition gloves, as well as confirming requisitions for any men under his command. Plus more, paperwork is the beating heart of a military. Hughes was the man for paperwork, he could look at a document and mmmm.

Selim is the first homunculus, because pride was the first sin. Not only Biblically, about how Adam and Eve covered themselves after after eating the apple, but it also makes sense as Father, the Homunculus first sin. It clearly didn’t took long for him to see himself as superior to humans.

The master of Hoheinheim was the first, or one of the first alchemists, he created the homunculus using the blood of Hoheinheim, because of this blood relationship or just for the gratitude of the homunculus for the blood, Hoheinheim ended up with half the philosopher's stone. The homunculus did not create alchemy, but he had a knowledge far beyond all others, and tricked them into making a stone to fulfill his first goal which was to have a vessel because he could not live outside of that flask

Note: Xeres had a population of over a million people. So Hoenheim has over 500,000 human souls within him, far more than an average homunculus. Attempting suicide would essentially require Hoenheim to exhaust all of that energy, probably having to kill himself countless times. Granted, some energy has probably been used up over the 400+ years of his life - but not enough to have a significant impact. Also, you might as well drop any ideas of resurrection in this show. We've already learned that bringing back the dead is simply impossible, it isn't a matter of power or energy. Personally, my theory is that similar to how a person's body will decompose and return to the world - the same happens to a person's soul. Without a container (body, philosopher stone, Al's armor, etc), the soul will also break down and be recycled back into the world. For those like Al and Barry, their souls were bound to a new container quickly enough to survive - but otherwise souls aren't stored in some afterlife from which they can be grabbed and "brought back."

The principle that death is permanent has already been made with Ed's discovery several episodes ago. It doesn't matter how much power you have, you can't bring someone back from death. And I am gonna harp again, but also just give it away, but if you re-watch the first intro for the show you may notice something it took me two watches through the series to realize. The first person we see is in fact not Edward in the intro, but Van, as a slave. Blew my damn mind when I realized this person who looks just like Ed was anyone but. It never gets addressed, until this episode and it was one of those things that just smacked me for being so obvious. Alchemy was known and practiced before Father, and remember, Xerces was known as a highly advanced civilization before it disappeared. It is likely their rudimentary understanding of alchemy helped to give them a leg up on other civilizations making them so prosperous. The dwarf in the flask was created with Hoenheim's blood and seemed to be formed with a vast wealth of knowledge already manifest. Consider the knowledge it had and how important it was that the king himself sought its council. He had so much power, but, was confined to the flask, suggesting that if he were ever removed from the vessel made to contain him he'd perish. Thus his motivation to sacrifice the people of Xerces just so he could have a body of his own and be free. We can also see now just why Van struggles to relate to his sons, and why he considers himself a monster. All of the other homunculi are derived from Father. He was the first true homunculus, but in terms of who was made first among his "children," Pride would fit the bill. Give that some thought though in regards to how they are named and how they behave. Gluttony can't stop himself from wanting to eat everything he can. Sloth has to be forced to work and perform his task and hates every minute of it. Greed has an insatiable sense of want. They are not cartoon caricatures of their namesakes but it is clearly part of their persona that is curved by the influence of Father. He refers to them as children, and himself as Father, but we also saw him convey to Van that he more or less finds the desire for connection among humans to be silly. Lastly, again, Brotherhood. Edward and Alphonse are the obvious two that fit the handle for the series, but, Father and Hoenheim, Mustang and Hughes, Scar and his Brother, there are so many from differing origins that are all leading to the same place, and it's another subtle part of what makes this series to brilliant. The irony between Ed and Van is, they are seeing things from two very different perspectives. Ed sees Van as the man who left them to do who knows what and blames his being gone on why their mother died so tragically, perhaps with a false sense of hope that if he'd been there he could have done something. It is childish resentment. Whereas Hoenheim sees what he is doing as a necessity, knowing firsthand what Father is capable of and what he is planning. He also has the resentment and guilt of knowing just what he is and is likely terrified of what his sons would think of him if they knew. Remember how emotional he got just from Trisha telling him he wasn't a monster. Trisha and Pinako are probably the only people outside of Father who know what Hoenheim really is. As far as the alchemy/alchahestry. Go allllll the way back to when Fu was talking about the origins of alchahestry in Xing, and the legend of the Western Sage. Amestris has pretty much the exact same legend about a man from the East. Xerces exists between both of the contemporary nations, so you've just got to put two and two together at that point to realize that Father was the one who came to Amestris and taught people alchemy, and Hoenheim wound up in Xing teaching alchahestry. The ritual that granted them immortality was also in essence human transmutation, and so the portal of truth was opened. The amount of knowledge Edward and Al gained by sacrificing their bodies was enough to make them prodigies in alchemy, setting them apart from even their much more experienced peers. Imagine the amount of knowledge gained by Hoenheim with 1/2 the population of xerces being offered as the toll. In the case of Van, he has retreated into humility, wanting to lead a normal life in an effort to feel human, and finally had the opportunity to have the family he always wanted. Meanwhile, Father, his polar opposite seems much more inclined to be treated like a god.

I don’t thing the not being people to bring people back from the death is set in stone as you saying, the Elric Brothers and Izumi likely had incomplete knowledge of human transmutation. Also, I think that at some point the question swifts from “is it possible?” to “is it worth the price?”, which is the whole equivalent exchange and ethics of science/philosophy thing. Being impossible kinda takes theme away from the show.
@Kamenari37
@Kamenari37 10 ай бұрын
@@matheusp572 That is where the show starts out yes. Asking in terms of price to do such a thing, but the episode where Ed digs up his mother to find out he didn't even transmute the same person had a point to it. The entire point of that episode was to settle once and for all that Ed and Al despite what they lost, didn't even transmute their mother, much less bring back her soul as it was Alphonse who was bonded to the body instead until it was rejected. Ed specifically states after he has his realization that it truly was impossible afterall and it is important because it symbolizes his guilt finally being released and giving him a clear path forward. He calls Izumi to give her that same sense of peace, and she calls back to confirm that she too determined it wasn't even her child she brought back. They both created something else, but neither of them could create a soul. Even if they could create a soul, how could it possibly be the soul of a person who has already existed and died? Even Hoenheim doesn't even bother to try it. He was also the one to set Ed on the path of discovering that truth, and is the grandfather of all alchahestry who's lived for a very long time now. If someone like him doesn't utilize his own power to bring back his own wife what does that tell you about how futile it must be to try? The series has pretty much confirmed now that bringing back people from the dead is not something Alchemy can do no matter how much you exchange to make it happen.

idk if it has been said in the comments, but the origins of alchemy in Amestris were brought by Father, and in Xing by Hohenheim. Ling told the brothers about this, but in that moment we didn't know he was talking about them. I'd say that alkahestry is the true form of alchemy since it came from Hohenheim and was the alchemy he learnt in Xerxes. Also, in this episode he mentioned he has some medical knowledge (wink wink)

What I assumed at this point during the story is that the techniques for using alchemy and alkahestry are basically the same, the difference is where the energy comes from that is used for it. Alchemists believe the energy they use comes from the movement of the planets crust, but it looks like it actually comes from father. Meanwhile in Xing the energy comes from the dragons pulse. Xing was an advanced civilization when it was destroyed, it was probably pioneering alchemy research, and for a research they probably used the same as Xing uses now, or something similar, as it seems that Van Hohenheim is the one who went to Xing and taught them about Alkahestry (the western sage). It makes sense that he would teach them what he knew, while Father would teach something that essentially means they'd be reliant on him, and under his control. The dwarf of the flask is most likely an early alchemic attempt, some sort of early human transmutation to open the portal through the use of blood and somehow pull back something from the other side, namely the dwarf in the flask. Some sort of spiritual being which, like a soul, cannot exist without a container, similar to how Al cannot live without his body. Afterwards the dwarf in the flask taught them the secrets of alchemy, and the knowledge they gained from him was so valuable that they became reliant on him, and started to "trust" him. Not because he felt trustworthy, but because they were intoxicated by the knowledge and power he'd brought them so far. Then afterwards father and Van Hohenheim spread the knowledge of alchemy to neighbouring countries that were far less advanced and didn't have any knowledge of alchemy.

Also, I love how every “formal-military” conversation Mustang has with anyone is in code. He’s so smart!! I imagine the king of Xerxes wasn’t suspicious because he didn’t imagine anyone defying him, let alone some sort of homunculus thing. He tricked everyone to fulfill its own selfish desire and condemned Hohenheim. If you remember, not long ago, you see Hohenheim pressing his fingers into his chest while reciting some people’s names and then he says “forgive me, but I have to use you” and then those drops of what appears to be blood fall on the ground and are absorbed by the earth. That’s important later in the story and it’s only possible because of his origin story that you now witnessed. Yes!!! Yes!! He is a philosopher stone bc of all the people that died got sacrificed for it to be created alongside with Father. So Ed’s after credit scene was just to reiterate how massive of a massacre Xerxes was. Look forward to finish the show with you. And then yes! Watch it again in Japanese 😊

Fun fact, in the real life study of Alchemy, back when people thought it was a real thing, the first mention of a homunculus in writings related to alchemy came from a 14th century alchemist and doctor named Paracelsus, whose birth name was "Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim", making both Hohenheim's actual name, and the silly-sounding first suggested name both references to Paracelsus von Hohenheim. Also, although I wasn't able to find all of them, at least a few of the names Hohenheim shouted when he was checking if anyone was still alive were the names of other historical alchemists and mystics.

I CAN FINALLY COMMENT THIS!! At the very start of opening 1, the first character we see isn't Ed! Its easily overlooked but the character that looks like Edward actually has both of his arms but most people don't notice. We now know from this episode that its young Hohenheim stood in front of the array in Xerxes. Actually the first image we see of the opening is the transmutation circle at Xerxes the chronological start of this story!!

When you rewatch the first opening I like how obvious it is that Hohenheim is a key part of the story just from the first opening but everybody forgets this foreshadowing since its just the opening and we don't find out his importance until much later in episodes with a different op. The first few frames make it apparent that the overarching story starts with Hohenheim's but as the title comes on screen we see the burning of their house, that is the start of Ed and Al's story, we are watching them uncover the truth behind their fathers story! lol sorry to ramble in just love good writing I'm glad you're enjoying the show!! :))

You will eventually get more answers, but this is a great episode to learn from. Father is technically one of those little eyeball creatures you see pulling people into the gates. The alchemy master had pulled it into the physical world using the sample of blood from slave 23 because it was closer to the source of alchemy and was in possession of more intimate knowledge than a standard person. It was more than 500,000 souls trapped in Hohenheim... can you imagine how terrible that had to be for him?

25:35 The answer is no. They established that bringing someone back from the dead is impossible, with the episode we find out Al was the one in the thing that Ed and he made when they tried to bring back their mother. At the end of the day the Philosopher stone can do great things and ignore the rule of equivalent exchange by essentially being raw energy. Yes you can "perfect" human transmutation buy creating a human body as we saw Father essentially did for himself but the x factor is you can't "being back" or replicate a human soul.

So, the idea with Hohenheim being a philosophers stone is kinda the same idea as with the homoculi saying that their stone is their core. Where as the immortality of the homoculi is powered by a stone with tens or perhaps hundreds of sacrifices, Hohenheims immortality is powered by a "stone" with hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of sacrifices. In theory he could die, but that would probably require something equal to shooting him in the head every ten minutes for a hundred years to spent all the souls in the stone. So unlike the homoculi who have a physical stone in them, for Hohenheim all that he is is the stone.

3:40 not exactly thinking it up all on the spot but more like treading carefully, she realize she cant hide it all so she’s slowly just telling him the truth in a way that makes her look good 9:36 and here father/homunculus name drops the first part of Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim’s name a real historical figure 11:01 the name of dwarf in the flask is based off of the real life concept of a homunculi where if an alchemist were to manage to create one it must be kept in a flask like an artificial womb because it would die outside of it as its in its infancy stage, in fact the term homunculus is latin for little person/man hence dwarf not as in the fictional race of alcohol loving and cave dwelling blacksmiths but as in simply a small or miniature person which is what father/homunculus views himself as; a small individual within the flask however as he said it himself he created a receptacle for himself using hohenheim’s blood so he is still a dwarf within a flask as all he did was switched containers, he had never escaped his original nature 25:35 he means what he means, hes a philosopher stone in the form of a human as revealed in previous episodes homunculus are created using a philosopher stone as their core and philosopher stones are made using human souls so what hohenheim is is the same thing cept he wasnt created using a philosopher stone but he himself was turned into a philosopher stone the after credits scene elaborate on this point as marcoh had something in a semi-liquid state while kimbly had a small crystal, the homunculus has what looks like a gemstone and both king bradly and the current greed were created by dripping a liquid philosopher stone into their bodies, the form a philosopher stone takes isnt defined so what’s there stopping it from going to the extremes and bring in the form of a walking, talking and baby making human 29:08 hohenheim didnt created alchemy but he did brought forth it to the rest of the world or at least amestris and xing sicne as mentioned in the ep we met ling we learned that their alkahestry originated from the sage of the west while for amestris alchemy originated from the philosopher of the east… now ask yourself; besides father who is the only survivor of the now ruined country of xerxes that lies in the desert between these 2 countries? 29:45 the difference between alchemy and alkahestry working and not working is probably power source as alchemy is mentioned to utilize the energy generated from tectonic shifts between the plates of the earth’s crust while alkahestry utilizes the power of the dragon’s pulse or dragon vein, not sure what the exact difference is and while not a precise analogy, if you were to move your body alchemy would be saying oxygen carried by the blood powers you while alkahestry is using the brain to send signals telling the muscles to move, neither is incorrect nor mutually exclusive to one another but theyre still different enough at the same time 1 thing to note is that outside of original nature of a homunculus and a human both father and hohenheim share exactly the same nature currently, everything father can do so can hohenheim can do meaning that if father is the “big bad” of the series then hohenheim being his equal and opposition is the “big good” instead if father is the endless abyss then hohenheim is the limitless light, he is the “god” to father’s “devil”

Alchemy uses the energy of the inside of the earth and Alkahestry uses the energy flowing through nature, or our own natural life sources too. I guess some would call it Chi or Qi. So that's why Father couldn't effect their Alkahestry, because he essentially cut off the power flowing from the tectonic plates, but couldn't cut off the energy flowing through the air or from within.

It would probably be a good idea to rewatch FMAB a second time, because you do pick up on a lot of things you missed the first time around and things starts making a lot more sense. In my opinion at least. Bradley didn't kill Olivier because he likes playing the game and admires anyone else who can play it. To phrase it another way, he's playing a game of chess with the opposite side and he wants to be challenged. This episode is why Hohenheim had to leave his family behind. He had seen Father's handy work before and knew it would happen again, and if he didn't stop Father, he'd lose the people he loves and cares for.

Pinako said to Ed that She left a message to Hohenheim "please tell him that I was dying and I couldn't keep my promise". Later, in the episode "Family Portrait" you can notice that Trisha knew about all it, and her promise of wait for her husband return. Sad and nice. Regarding your question about Father blocking alchemy... Here's a cool deduction from this episode: The dwarf kinda (1) looked like the arms and eyes inside the Gate of Truth, and (2) knew a ton right from the get-go, enough to whip up immortality. SO, HERE'S THE JUICY PART...chances are, the dwarf came to life by mixing/imbuing Hohenheim's blood with the ACTUAL TRUTH FROM INSIDE THE GATE!. That's why the dwarf knew so much and had that particular form. So basically, Father is part Truth, which explains why he could dominate and shut down alchemy like a champ. Hohenheim got caught up in that massive event too, so it seems like he got a massive info dump (maybe the complete Truth package) right then and there, I'd say skipping the need to study any further. By the way, it's very likely that out of everyone alive only Father and Hohenheim still possesses the knowledge about alchemy needed to pull off that experiment again.

A human soul is basically priceless, and that means you cannot create one through equivalent exchange, nor can you call them back from the afterlife. The dead stay dead. While born a man, and still technically a man… Hohenhiem’s body is now host to thousands of souls, making him a philosophers stone made flesh. His body is still that of a human though. Father’s body was artificially created, so he is not human.

This episode sure told almost everything. The reason why they didn't suspect the homonculus is probably because it taught them alchemy and probably other knowledge in the first place. The king was also desperate since he didn't have any other choice.

1) Father Didn't created Alchemy in the world he Brought it to Amestris 2) Scientific name discoveries and methods after their name so Father's OG name was Humanculous That's why Artificial Humans are called Humanculous; Notice How May Didn't Knew What a Humanculous Is. That's Why Salime is the Frist Humanculous

This is my fav ep! I was surprised when i watched the first time too! Hohenheim is the living philosopher’s stone🎉 Yes, Hohenheim is the only survival of Xerxis which have golden eyes and hair (also Ed and Al if you notice)😂 And yes Hohenheim is the person who bring alchemy to Xing (they mention their god with golden eye and hair too) Now this is your answer about we need someone strong enough in our side 😂 (If somebody consider this is spoilers pls tell me i will delete it)

This is my fave episode in the whole series for one simple reason. The allegory of Satan. The dwarf in the flask came into this world because of humans desire be like god and be immortal yet thre dwarf twists those desires for his own gains and manipulates rulers and slaves alike for his own ends. Until nothing is left not even their souls because he has stolen those as well. Note the phrase he says where he gave hoenheim a name and knowledge yet he gave him a body that will live forever with the half the souls of xerxes inside hoenheim. Freeing him from slavery yet condemning him to live forever with his sin. With the tormented souls inside his body forever.

Van Hohenheim saw 'more' of the Truth than Ed and Al did because the 'sacrifice' he gave was greater than their's. Because he saw more 'truth' and he's had decades to hone his alchemy, he can do some crazy stuff.
