My buddy and I heard about this 70 Challenger not 5 miles from our house. We just had to go and check it out. The New Pickers, Ray and Ronnie. LOL. It has been sitting since 1980. The guy has owned it since High School! Just sitting there rotting away like most of the cars that the guys say, "well I am going to fix it up one day". And then it has gone too far and needs every part imaginable. Once we raised the hood we could not believe how rusty it was around the firewall and windshield area. It still can be saved. You can buy every part to fix it.

Looking at that poor gem just sitting there almost rotted away and hearing the drag strip in the background sort of gives you an eerie reminder of what that car was capable of doing at one time back when it was parked in that very spot. Such a shame, couldn't just park it inside somewhere or build a shed for it instead of leaving it out.

what pisses me off is that they could have sold it. kept the money to buy it again... or buy a god damn tarp and cover it up. Some people don't deserve what they have. I wish I could find a gem like this. I'd spend every Saturday restoring it with my buddies over brewskies.

This happens more than it should. There's a Barracuda sitting on a trail in woods in Enfield Ct. I offered money for it around 1992 when it was still good. Since then, it's been scrounged and picked over, people lit fires in it, used for target practice. It's still there...

383 was the standard engine the for the R/T package. It would take a lot of money to restore it. If it were a 340 or 440 six pack car it would be worth it. Sitting on the ground like that causing the trunk and floor pans to rot. The vinyl top always causes the roof to rust if stored outside such as this one.
@yavin99
@yavin99 4 жыл бұрын
You could get the 340 option with a Cuda but R/T Challengers weren't offered with the 340 engine but different models of Challengers did.
@bjbuschman2

Are you underestimating the 383 which came in 2 different versions as well as the 440.If anybody remembers the colors.some were blue and some was orange.The blue version was basic and regular engines while the orange was the High performace versions.Me personaly would rather have the 383 HP version to build because the 383 either version had thicker piston walls which means they were better for boring out.Just my opinion.

It's a little more complicated, I think ---people holding onto their cars are holding onto their memories---even if the car rots away. If the car goes, so does a part of themselves, and they're just not ready to admit defeat by Father Time. It's sad to see cars go to waste, but worse when people go likewise, after finally letting go of a prized possession.

I cant stand when someone holds on to a classic car and lets it rot away by not covering it with some tarp . Its going backwards because that just more work your making for yourself and more money you have to kick out to replace metal and labor cost if you have a shop do it for you. Soon as i bought my charger project i covered it up with tarp. Of course it has surface rust but its a real solid project and theres no way i would ever let it get WORSE .

Great find, thanks for sharing! I wonder if the rusty firewall was caused by mice making nests in the cowl area and thus the water being trapped in the cowl and rotting the firewall. That's what I found on my Challenger when I got it from a barn. Keep in contact with the owner. Never know when he might decide to sell it and want it to go to a good home if he is sentimental about it. Even though it's not a 440 Six Pack/Hemi car as another poster mentioned, I think it worth saving. Would love to see the trunk area and under the hood too!

He's doing you a favor by not selling it to you. You'd spend $60k or more to restore a $30k car. The only problem is letting the guy go on his ego trip on the fact you like it and want it. Most of these yard-art types get their rocks off on all the people that knock on their door to ask if it's for sale. Trust me, there are many cars hiding in garages just waiting for someone to find and restore them. Took me five years of looking but I finally picked up a numbers-matching '69 GTO with 33k miles from original owner. In that time I heard 'No' too many times to count. Good luck!

I appreciate that you'd have to spend a lot of money on that car. But, Challengers go for waaaaaay more than 30k. I've seen most for 60-90k. A 30k Challenger would be an absolute bargain, actually, there's a Challenger T/A for sale that needs resto for 22k in Australia!! I'd love to grab it, but I already have a car to restore, and I have no money.... Congrats on the GTO, '69 model is my personal favorite, what colours is it wearing?
