"White Punks on Dope" last track on side one of their first album The Tubes (1975). They were very creative. I loved being young in the 70's as it was a time of freedom and humans brave enough to explore and push boundary's . The singer is Fee Waybill. This is like an anthem for insanity.

Really, when the Tubes first got going, I saw them at Winterland in SF and the show had like 30 people playing and dancing on stage. All these skits and themes were so much more than we had ever seen. In truth is, they were doing MTV music videos live, before there was MTV. They were way way ahead of their time. Unfortunately, their biggest downfall was the staggering expense of putting shows on like that on a national or world tour. It came pretty close to bankrupting them. There is a video album, "The Completion Backwards Principle," which is outstanding and representative of their best stage shows.

I'm 65. Growing up in the seventies there was music everywhere. I've been to well over 1000 shows/concerts in my life, but I saw The Tubes on Pier 84 in NY back in "77-78 (it's kinda a blur these days) and it was by far one of the best shows I ever saw. Right up there with Bowie at The Tower in Philly, The Dead at Englishtown, and The Talking Heads at CBGB's and the "Big Suit Tour"

I've been to literally over 400 concerts in my life and saw the Tubes for the first time in 1980 during their "Prime Time" tour and I rank it as the second best concert/show I've ever seen. Fee Waybill is one of the best, yet under-appreciated frontmen in rock and the rest of the band are all incredible musicians. They poke fun at everything from teen-age sex & drugs (WPOD, Don't Touch Me There) to television (TV is King) to wealth/money/materialism(Young & Rich) to 50's campy movies (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman). Truly a freaking awesome band. Oh, number 1 was Pink Floyd's "The Wall" also in 1980. Dig deeper, Chod! You'll dig it!

The version behind this video is from the Tubes' album "What do you want from live," recorded at The Hammersmith Odeon. I'm happy to say that I was in the audience - a thoroughly jaw-dropping show, incuding a punk version of "I saw her standing there" complete with real live chainsaw!

The guy on the keys with the long hair is Vince Welnick. He wound up playing with the Grateful Dead from 1990-1995. He then did the bummer and killed himself. Who knows why. The Tubes were a crazy, crazy band. You might also like their song "What Do You Want From Life?". It ends with the line "Or a baby's arm holding an apple." The lead singer is named Fee Waybill.
@Escapee5931

Managed to see this band on their UK tour about 5 years ago. Lead singer Fee Waybill was still donning those insane platforms for this song. Most of their songs were a spoof of something. This one was a take on the excesses of a glam rock star, "Quay Lude" complaining about his privileged upbringing.

Like what you said about smooth transitions. Anybody can pull of a transition of sorts, if they rehearse it long enough. But if the writing isn't elegant, and support the reason for that transition it will only be clumsy.

I couldn't agree with you more that many great songs are hidden on B sides or didn't see airplay for whatever reason, but are hidden gems. As for more Tubes I would suggest "Haloes", "What do you want from life" and "Mondo Bondage". I would also love to see you react to more Thin Lizzy particularly "Johnny the Fox meats Jimmy the Weed", a funky as hell song..

Agree with another poster "Amnesia" is a KZbin friendly track and is much more interesting musically than White Punks. Closer to something like Steely Dan.
