OMG - There's yet ANOTHER Singer 66 Bobbin Winder?????

Good friend and viewer Jo Mercer found this and sent it to me so I could dissect it and show everyone yet another bobbin winder. This one is one is not common on this side of the pond as it belonged on a 66K with Lotus decals. It's an interesting design that was originally engineered for a treadle operated machine.

That is a very interesting bobbin winder! It amazes me that the springs in these machines hold up year after year.

Exactly! Those springs must be close to 100 years old or older, yet they are in perfect shape.

Thank you for this! I came home unexpectedly with a Singer 66 Lotus treadle made in 1908 last weekend and this is exactly the type of winder mine has. The machine itself is in decent shape (just needs a good cleaning to get rid of the 80-90 years worth of grime build up) but I know I need to replace the cam spring on the winder. Looking at the placement as it is currently on my machine, I don't think there's room for a tire unless I want it to touch the leather treadle belt at all times and run continuously. But I bought a tire just in case, so we'll see. I'm looking forward to sewing on my 114 year old beauty!

I promise I needed this on Sunday when I was putting back together the parts I cleaned for an old 66. I guess I learned enough with the videos and I was able to set it up again. I did not touch the eccentric this time. :). I will review what I did now that I see it in action. Another perfect video for me. Thank you so much.

I think my lotus singer 66 has this type of bobbin winder. I got some normal bobbin winder tires, and I don't think they're going to work, as I'm pretty sure it would contact the motor belt even when disengaged! (Never mind trying to squeeze it on) It looks like the previous owner had wound around some electrical tape to get it to where it would actually function. My solution was a spare rubberband tripled up!

It took a considerable effort to squeeze that one onto the winder, I made it look easy, it wasn't! :-)

OMG is right! I guess when you make a model for 50 years - from well before the 1st World War until well after the 2nd - you make a lot of little variations along the way. I'm beginning to think you could just about have a museum dedicated to bobbin winders alone! Thank you for the close-up of those two springs, especially. I wouldn't have even noticed otherwise...

Singer really did hit it out of the park with the model 66 back in 1902, and again in 1911 with the model 99...

my red eye had this type. luckily only took me 4 attempts to reassemble lol. didn’t have the strength to put a new tire on so stole an old one from a 201 and worked perfectly :)

There are so many flavors of bobbin winders for 66's, it's hard to keep track of what it what! Luckily, the concepts are all the same so it's pretty easy to figure things out.

Thanks for this great video, super helpful to watch you do it step-by-step. I have a winder just like this but for an early treadle 15. My thread guide doesn't seem to spend enough time on the right side of teh bobbin - I get uneven winding heavy to the left. Is there a way to adjust how far over the guide comes?

Hi, what others characteristic does model 66 K have for identification of others 66. Don’t know how many are. I believe took apart my bobbing winder and mixed the spring so I just create more problems for me?

Bob have you ever replaced the tiny pin on a bobbin winder that holds the bobbin in place. I have this same bobbin winder on a 1910 66 Redeye. Thanks

I have a 1910 Red Eye 66 with, actually without that bobbin winder. I am looking for the part. It is proving hard to find. I have the stop latch as it screws in directly to the guard. This guard has a much larger gap/hole in the guard and only one small screw hole for the winder part. It does not need the second small screw hole in the guard, as the belt guard has its own extension piece which takes the stop latch screw. If anyone has one of these winders in need of a home, I would love you to contact me. Thank you

Did you ever or did I miss the 66k alternative long bobbin winder? I cannot find anything in manual and it does click and just hangs down. Ugh

It looks very like the 15k winder, this type I'm not a fan of the later ones were better.

Most likely is... There are so many designs that Singer used, I'll probably never get to them all.
