This song came out in 1966. They were a very popular folk-rock group in the 60's, comprised of John and Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliott, and Denny Dougherty (lead on this song). Other great songs to check out are Creeque Alley, I Saw Her Again, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Dedicated to the One I love, and Monday, Monday.

Song was released Dec '65, & was their first hit. Their song, Monday, Monday was their biggest hit. Denny Dougherty sang lead on this one, John Phillips & his then-wife, Michelle (the blonde) wrote the song (John wrote Monday, Monday as well), & Cass Elliot was the other female. She had a great career on her own after the Mamas & Papas, but sadly, died in 1974, at the way-too-early age of 32. Dedicated To The One I Love is another great one by the Ms&Ps.

They weren't two couples. Two did get married and then divorced. And other interesting things within the group...They sing about California of the 1960s. California is NOT like that anymore...by far...BUT love this group....Try their songs"California Dreamin', 'Dedicated to the One I love', ' Twelve Thirty" , 'Words of Love", and of course, their autobiographical song of their own story sung by them which is rare to hear a group do, called 'Creeque Alley" Creeque (pronounced creaky) Alley is a real place, one of a series of alleys (actually named Creeque's Alley and owned by the Creeque family) in the Virgin Islands. In the song 'Creeque Alley', They are telling the (autobiographical) story of how they formed so they are talking about each of them and other singers/groups they were in, associated with, or friends with. Folk Music is where Michelle and John Phillips came out of in the early sixties. "John and Mitchy were gettin' kind of itchy Just to leave the folk music behind". Next lyric refers to Denny Doherty and Zal Yanovsky trying to make it big, get gigs, record made, recording contracts, anything: "Zal and Denny workin' for a penny Tryin' to get a fish on the line" "In a coffee house Sebastian sat And after every number they'd pass the hat" refers to how John Sebastian, who wasn't a member of the Mamas and Papas, started out, as many folk singers did in the fifties and sixties. Song's lyrics: "McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get any higher, but that's what they were aiming at. Doesn't refers to drugs as much as aiming to reach the heights of music popularity and also a play on the Bryd's hit song "Eight Miles High'. 'McGinn' refers to Roger McGuinn, the lead singer of the pop/folk group 'The Byrds'. McGuire' refers to singer Barry McGuire who had some big hits in the mid-sixties, especially 'Eve of Destruction'. Example of the meaning of lyrics in the song: "Zally said Denny, you know there aren't many Who can sing a song the way that you do, let's go south Denny said Zally, golly, don't you think that I wish I could play guitar like you", refers Zal Yanovsky and Denny Doherty getting together, then joined by John Sebastian, "Zal, Denny and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl) And after every number they'd pass the hat" was the three yound men trying to make it big before Denny met Cass Elliot and she joined the three guys. "When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps..." (she was infatuated with him)..."Call John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps..." (The Mugwumps were a 1960s folk rock band, based in New York City. It released one self-titled album in 1967 and two singles. The Mugwumps found little success during their short time together in 1964, and are best known for launching the careers of Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty and John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky who made up the group the Mugwumps, pronounced 'MUG-wamps', as in it rhymns with 'swamps'. After the group's breakup, Denny Doherty went on to team with Michelle ad John Phillips while John Sebastian and Za Yanovsky formed their group 'The Lovin' Spoonful'.... Hence the song's lyrics in Creeque Alley: "...Sebastian and Zal formed the (Lovin') Spoonful..Michelle, John (Phillips), and Denny gettin' very tuneful..." The writer of the song, John Phillips, takes some poetic licensein lyrics like "When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore, But she changed her mind one day. Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike Take me to New York right away..." Cass Elliot hadn't ever planned to go to Swarthmore College but she did want to go to New York City.

"Dream a Little Dream of Me" (I think Mama Cass [the big girl] sings lead on this one), and "Monday, Monday" are two really good ones of theirs. John Phillips (I forget which one he is) is the father of Chyna Phillips, of the group "Wilson Phillips" (and the blonde girl, Michelle Phillips, is her mother), and McKenzie Phillips, of the old TV show "One Day at a Time" (his daughter played the older sister). Will you please, also do Cher---I'm sure you've heard of her, but, maybe, didn't pay any attention. I think this song, "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me", from the movie she was in, "Burlesque", is one of her finest moments, ever. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGfPZol7Zrh2bqs

In the post war era, AM radio format was 2 minutes 30 seconds...and everything was edited to fit this format or you didn't get played on AM radio. It took bands like the Beatles (who took artistic control of their own product back from the studios) to break that mold. Also, the newer FM radio format was looser and less commercial, so the arty stuff began to migrate to FM radio and all the good stuff just followed.12 minute songs from Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and others soon drove that old 2:30 AM radio format right into the dirt. You can expect everything from the 50s and MOST everything from the 60s to be 2:30.

The lead male singer was called Papa Denny. Don't know last name. Denny's pitch and the quality of his voice make him the ideal lead. Everyone is gone now except for Mama Michelle (tall blonde), married to the group's founder John Phillips. As for the personal machinations of the group, go to some kind of pop history. The group was primarily mid to late 60's so while the English groups predominated, the folksy sound of the Mamas and Papas provided some variety.

Dedicated to the One I Love is my favorite of the Mamas and Papas. Another great song for you to react to is Runaway by Del Shannon from 1962.

California Dreamin' is their best. They really only have 2 other good songs; Monday, Monday and Creeque Alley - you will enjoy both!
