That's so true Ted. I was born and raised in Northern California. I spend my entire Naval career in the Pacific, and SE Asia (86-90). Us California boys could always tell when one of us was homesick. We would play this in our boombox and we would be okay. It's always reminded me of winter days sitting on the wharf in San Francisco eating clam chowder and drink a Anchor Steam. Those are good memories.

For those wondering... the song was released in 1965. That show, might have been from the early 1970's but the song is definitely from the mid-1960s. I grew up in the 1960's and 70's...The Mamas and The Poppas were very popular...had a lot of great hits, and Mama Cass, the heavy set girl, she went on to have some successful solos. She made a hit out of a John Denver song called Leaving on a Jet Plane and also she has a Beautiful song that was meant to encourage people to try for their dreams... it's called "Make Your Own Kind of Music"

@@acavell6184 I can still remember the first color t.v. I ever saw, my grandma's youngest son, who was only 16, but worked from the time he was in the 8th grade at a cheese plant...saved his money and bought his mom a beautiful color t.v. in a large wood cabinet. I happen to be staying there the next day (I stayed with them on most Saturdays, as my parents worked) and I got to watch Secretariat win the Belmont stakes in color. I had watched in 1972, his stable mate, Riva Ridge win the Kentucky Derby, on my Grandma's old black and white t.v, and then in 1973, saw Secretariat win the the Derby and Preakness...but seeing it in color, as he won the Belmont was really awesome. It hooked me into horse racing of which I still have a passion for. : ) My own family couldn't afford a color tv until around 1975.

Timeless song that has a '60s timestamp. This song reminds me of all the things my parents must have experienced when they first immigrated to CA from the Ireland and across the states in the late '60s. It just makes me imagine of the Golden Age of California and how cool that must have been. SoCal at it's finest. Great choice Mr. V

This song has got this call and response thing going. You got the one main verse being sung. Then you got the other members repeating that lyric in harmony. And this pretty much flows until you get to the bridge of the song where it is all sung as one verse, then you get the instrumental interlude and then a repeat of the first part with a slight change of the lyrics. Quite nice actually. It’s very catchy, and The Mama’s & The Papa’s were brilliant when it came to harmony and doing stuff like this.

The Mamas and the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group was composed of John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips (born Holly Gilliam). Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips,[2] the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s. The Mamas and the Papas released five studio albums and 17 singles over four years, six of which made the Billboard top 10 and have sold close to 40 million records worldwide.[3] The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for its contributions to the music industry.[1] The band reunited briefly to record the album People Like Us in 1971 but had ceased touring and performing by that time. John Philips also got bands together for the Monterey Pop Festival. Singers and bands included Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin (Mama Cass is shown during Joplin's performance), Jefferson Airplane, the American debut of The Jimi Hendrix Experience (where he set his guitar on fire), The Who, and The Mamas & The Papas. Michelle Philips is currently the only surviving member and she became an actress.

Wikipedia: "The song was written in 1963 while John Phillips and Michelle Phillips were living in New York City during a particularly cold winter, and she was missing sunny California. He would work on tunes late at night and one morning brought her the first verse. ...Michelle Phillips wrote the lyrics, 'Well, I got down on my knees, and I pretend to pray,' but Cass Elliot had been singing 'I began to pray' until corrected by Phillips when they were touring. She sang 'began' on the original recording." Phillips is the last surviving original member of the Mamas and the Papas.

The Mamas and the Papas were formed by husband and wife John Phillips (formerly of the New Journeymen) and Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty (formerly of the Mugwumps). Both of these earlier acts were folk groups active in 1964 and 1965. The last member to join was Cass Elliot, Doherty's bandmate in the Mugwumps, who had to overcome John Phillips' concern that her voice was too low for his arrangements, that her physical appearance would be an obstacle to the band's success and that her temperament was incompatible with his (Elliot struggled with obesity all her life, and felt deeply insecure about her looks). The group considered calling itself the Magic Cyrcle before switching to the Mamas and the Papas, inspired by the Hells Angels, whose female associates were called "Mamas"!

One of the great groups from the fabulous 60's. The Mamas & The Papas can really sing and harmonize. This is a great summertime song. One of my other favorites from them is " I SAW HER AGAIN LAST NIGHT"

If you listen to their song "Creeque Alley" it tells the story of them getting together. They've been described as 4 people trying to sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

They've famously got "the Surfing Vibe", like The Beach Boys but mellower. (Not surfing the internet; the actual ocean, on a surf board, lol).

The blonde woman and the guy singing lead, John and Michelle Phillips are the parents of actress Mackenzie Phillips (from "American Graffiti" and the TV show "One Day At A Time"), and singer Chynna Phillips (part of the early 90s hit making trio Wilson Phillips, the other two girls in that trio are the daughters of Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys)

I’m a seventy yr young white lady who grew up and partied to all the songs you react to. I’m glad to see young people rediscovering this music. Most of it iconic. You have to remember they didn’t have auto tune or electronics to clean up their voices. It was what you hear is what you get. Didn’t have MTV or VH1 to play music videos on. What we got to see was live performances. MTV didn’t come into being until August 1981. The Mamas and the Papas also did “Monday Monday”. Great song and lyrics. Have a great day Mr. Video....I enjoy your reactions immensely!!

And as the ride gets wilder you get funnier ~ 'Ain't" it surprising to discover all these folks jammin' ? Yeah. "Just bust right in to your expectation, and blow it away! The tall blonde girl, MIchelle is married to the tall guy. They are the true hippies of that culture. HaHaaaLOL ~ Blew your mind, did they? Indeed!

If I have the story right, Mama Cass Elliot had an amazing ear for vocal harmonies. She guided the formation of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, believing they would sound great together. (Obviously, she was right.) If you haven't done it yet, "Monday, Monday" was the other big hit by this group.

Good God my man... I grew up listening to these classics! I will always remember working on my father's race car while listening to this kind of music. I just probably aged myself but I don't care. Great reaction as always my friend

you crack me out. it works. About the group: The tall one, John Phillips was the genius who arranged those harmonies. Big 'Mama Cass' bugged him until he let her sing but she couldn't hit the high notes. Until she banged her head -- then could -- so she got to stay. True. Great hippy group, no shit!

Classic song....in lots of movies too.🎼🎶😎The 60’s gave us lots of harmony bands for sure. Beach Boys also a huge success in the 60’s and 70’s. Fashion in the 60’s and 70’s was different for sure. Rock On🤘

Never was a big Mamas and Papas fan, but have to admit this song kicked ass. Jose Feliciano was a blind singer/song writer from Peurto Rico that did an awesome version of this song and the Doors Light My Fire. Worth a listen.
