Spiciness in Chinese cuisine is originally intended for medicinal purposes. Hot pot and spicy food is normally found in regions of China where there is high humidity. The spicy foods makes you perspire which is intended to rid your body of moisture so you limbs don't swell up. You will hardly find any spicy foods in Cantonese or southern Chinese cuisine as they considered it unsophisticated in taste and refinement !

A few days ago, i went to 天水and tasted the so-called 麻辣烫。 i would never appreciate it as a good Chinese snack, because it is super spicy and numb. i will never eat it again. Damn it. If you try authentic 天水麻辣烫， you will probably hate it. I swear to God! .
